  Dedication

I would like to dedicate this book to several people.

First off, I’d like to thank Mary Malotte for stepping in and taking over some of the behind the scenes workings of being an author. She has restructured my website for me and helped become a reminder for scheduling and just getting me out of the house occasionally to have fun. Thank you so much, Mary.

Second, I’d like to thank Daryl Nichols Jr for helping with the cover also. I don’t know what I’d do without your help.

Third, I’d like to thank my friends Hero, Shae, and Alison for help with parts of the book that were a bit beyond me. You are all so very special to me.

Fourth, my thanks to Harold Friedman, who helped with some of the rock ‘n roll aspects. His behind the scenes knowledge of concerts was a big help.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Kink.com for the inspiration for the character of Brock and his empire. You guys rock!

I hope you all enjoy this book as it has been several decades in the making. I just needed some special friends to help encourage me to publish it.

  Chapter One

“I don’t fucking deserve this, Dwayne!” The whine was evident in her voice, but she didn’t care.

She had worked too long and too hard to be assigned a washed-up has-been singer from the eighties and nineties. The movers and shakers were what she should be assigned as the senior journalist for the music channel she worked for. Ten years of long hours, crappy assignments, and she had lost count of the number of come-ons by the up and comers who thought she would help launch their careers.

There were those that she had helped stand in the limelight, which did let their attributes shine. There were also those who she helped bury inadvertently.

Skye Daniels had majored in journalism as the digital age came into full swing. Newspapers soon would see a decline in readership, spiraling them towards their future demise. CNN had been around long enough to provide reliable news on TV and now the music stations followed suit.

However, it didn’t matter to her. She didn’t mind being the one behind the pretty ones in front of the cameras reporting the news. If the news was reported fairly and accurately, she was fine with the story. She hated it when the trash tabs held a field day with nonsense news. What further irritated her, though, was the amount of people who believed it as the truth.

Nearly everyone could get his or her news online. Now, people used computers, tablets, and smartphones to get their news along with the T.V. The amount of people that kept up with the Jones’s, or in this case, their favorite stars, was astounding.

Now, she sat in her boss’ office, still in shock with the bombshell he had just dropped in her lap. She had to tread lightly with the man so that it didn’t detonate and send her spiraling into the unemployment line.

“Look,” she began softly, putting on her best smile. Placation was her best bet here. “I’m sorry. You shocked me with the news, that’s all.”

Dwayne tapped a ballpoint pen on the glass and steel desk before him, a view of the New York skyline behind him through the large window. It was a view to die for, one that many a person worked hard to achieve in their careers. That valued, coveted corner office.

Skye knew she would never see an office like that, nor did she want one. The heartbeat of the industry was where she wanted to be. She loved music, movies, and T.V., and she found she loved reporting about it. That she could count many top performers and A-listers as her friends was something she would cherish forever.

“John Campbell is a has-been. I don’t even know why he is attempting a comeback. Everyone thought he was dead, for Pete’s sake!” Skye tried to keep her anger in check.

She didn’t want this assignment and she wouldn’t hide the fact. Jeez, even she had a crush on the man when she was younger.

“Get rid of that poster on your wall!” Skye’s grandmother yelled at her as she put the girl’s laundry away in the dresser. “That is the devil’s handiwork and I will not have that trash in my house!”

Skye hated that her grandmother still put away her laundry. She knew it was a way to snoop around in her room, trying to discover information.

Last week, her grandmother found some cassettes that Skye had purchased at Hollywood Video. Thinking she had buried them far in the back of her winter sweater drawer, Skye was wrong. It was summer, for Pete’s sake. Why was she even in that drawer?

“You’re heading down the long wide path to hell, young lady!” her grandmother had said with disg
ust. “I am so ashamed of you!”

As her grandmother left the room with the white plastic laundry basket under her arm, Skye looked at the poster. She didn’t want to get rid of it. It made her feel funny in certain parts of her body but she didn’t know what they meant.

Against a black background with columns of fire on either side of him stood John Campbell. Black leather pants clad his legs, slung low on his hips. A black vest adorned his torso, leaving his glistening tanned chest and ridged abs bare along with his muscular arms. He held a black electric guitar in his hands, while an intense smoldering look exuded from the glossy paper.

He was the quintessential rock star. Tall and lean but muscular. He worked out from what she had read in the magazines. His wavy blond hair was down to his shoulders and any self-respecting teenage girl, or even middle-aged women would be envious. Piercing blue eyes sat within long blond eyelashes that swooped up in an arch that, again, would be jealous inducing.

John Campbell was known far and wide as JC. Females of all ages screamed his name at concerts, while some fainted should they be graced with his nearness. A few months ago, a woman had claimed to be pregnant with his child but JC adamantly denied it. She had said he had invited her backstage at his concert in Philadelphia and seduced her right there on the couch in his dressing room.

The woman was a pretty blond with a thin body. Skye would never be invited by the likes of JC to his dressing room after a concert. Her body was too curvy. Her boobs were too big along with her hips. No matter what diet her grandmother put her on, Skye just couldn’t lose the weight.

The girls at school mocked her behind her back. Skye had seen them snickering behind their hands when they thought she wasn’t looking. Boys looked at her with unease and laughter. God, she hated school!

Having to live with an aged grandmother didn’t help her cause. Her parents had married quite young and then divorced when she was ten. Since neither parent really wanted her, her grandmother had taken her in, albeit, with a grudge and resentment. She was constantly reminding Skye how unwanted she was, and that the only reason she had a place to live was because of her generosity. It was something the woman never let her forget.

Thankfully, Skye had school and her babysitting jobs so she didn’t have to spend a lot of time with her grandmother. Unfortunately, she wasn’t allowed to go to friends’ homes after school, and friends weren’t allowed to come to their apartment.

She wasn’t sure why the woman was so intent on keeping her within arm’s reach or why she didn’t want her to have a normal life. Skye knew the woman was old-fashioned, but she went too far. There was no accounting for different times than the woman grew up in. If her grandmother had her way, Skye would be friendless and an old spinster before she met a man and got married.

Now, there was only one man Skye fantasized about, and no boy at school would ever meet with the criteria that was JC.

She had taken the poster down, but she was one-step ahead of her grandmother. Folding it carefully, she slid it between the mattress and box spring, making sure it was in the middle of the double bed. Taking another poster she had gotten at the flea market of a cute kitten on a black background, she crumpled it up into a small ball. It was her job to take out the trash, so she took the wadded-up poster along with the trash can from her bathroom and went out to the kitchen.

Along the way, Skye had managed to gather a few tears before stomping through the house. Holding the demolished poster up to show her grandmother, she couldn’t help but lash out. “Are you happy now?”

The older woman did nothing to acknowledge the trash in Skye’s hand, which raised her anger at the woman even more. Her grandmother sat in her recliner and read from a little booklet that came in the mail each month called The Upper Room. It was a month’s worth of daily Bible stories and inspiration to live by.

If the woman wasn’t ragging on Skye about something she would certainly go to hell for, she read that little booklet or the Bible. Most of the housework was Skye’s job. The only reason her grandmother did the laundry was because she didn’t trust Skye with her clothes. Skye was convinced it was so the woman could snoop in her room.

Five more years. That’s all she had to endure. Only five more years before she could leave home and leave her tightly controlled life behind. Five more years to gain freedom.

“This is big, Skye.” Dwayne’s baritone voice seeped into her brain. How much had she missed? “I believe JC began the rumor that he had died for a reason. You need to find out what happened to send him running from the world, and what is bringing him back to life.”

With no disrespect in her question, she hoped the large black man behind the desk in his Armani three-piece dark gray suit wouldn’t take it as such. “Can’t one of the other guys do it? Perhaps Jasper, or even Marcus.”

Dark chocolate brown eyes narrowed across the expanse of the workspace that separated them. She knew that look well. It was one of contemplation, not anger.

In all the years that she had worked for Dwayne, she had never seen him lose his temper. Skye had never heard the man raise his voice. He held a tight control of his emotions, one that must take a lot of work. When most people would have exploded at some of the things that happened around the office, Dwayne was calm, nearly scarily so. He would explain why the scenario would or wouldn’t work, and then he would guilt the person into doing whatever Dwayne wanted.

The sinking feeling in Skye’s stomach told her that she would be doing this story on JC. There would be no arguing for she knew she wouldn’t win.

Dwayne’s perfectly manicured fingers moved together into a triangle over the edge of his desk, a true testament to the man’s control. “If you manage to get this story out of JC, you will achieve all that you ever dreamed of. You’ll be put in charge of all the reporters here, and…” he paused. She wasn’t sure if it was for dramatic effect or he was searching for the right words.

“I can’t believe you would try to bribe me, Dwayne!” Skye interjected, standing quickly. Turning to the window to her right, she gazed out at the city.

She had come here six months after she graduated from college. She had been a misplaced small-town girl who couldn’t find a job in the Midwest so she came to New York, where everyone else seemed to land.

She completed applications immediately after picking them up, or filled them out online. It had been two months of looking, waiting, anticipating some kind of activity, but it hadn’t come to pass.

Funds diminished quickly and she needed to find something or she would need to head back home to live. Being able to afford to live in New York City was so much of a luxury that Skye would have needed to work several jobs to afford it.

Sitting in a small deli, Skye quietly listened to conversations around her as she enjoyed a sandwich, her only meal of the day at that point. Two men were at the next table and they were discussing the need of a reporter at the music channel they worked at. They said their boss was at his wits end trying to find just the right person but hadn’t yet.

She wrapped the rest of her sandwich in the paper it had come in and headed straight for the music channel’s headquarters. With as much bravado as she could muster, she asked for an application at the front desk in the lobby. The woman behind the desk gave her a once over before begrudgingly handing over a paper with instructions on where to go online to fill out an application.

Frustrated, Skye asked if there was any way she could just fill out an application there, for she didn’t want to let time pass as she went home and then hoped she could get online at the motel she was renting by the week. The woman refused with an apology and then turned to help a woman in a smart business suit.

Knowing she was at a loss, Skye had to hope she got home at a decent time to fill out the application. She knew time was of the essence when it came to job hunting, and she would lose quite a bit on the subway, then bus, and then the walk to the motel.

  Turning around, she took several
steps before walking into the hard body of a man. The abrupt stop as she was in motion caused her to stumble backwards, and if it weren’t for the strong hands of the man, she would have fallen on her ass.

That kind man had helped keep her on her feet and was now sitting across from Skye. He had taken a liking to her that day. He had seen what had transpired between her and the receptionist. He had told Skye that desperation is sometimes the only sign he needed to know a good reporter. He had asked her up to his office, conducted an interview without an application, and hired her.

Now, she knew that he saw a desperation in her not to accept the story, and she knew that would be the reason why he would push for her to take it.

It would be a make or break interview for JC and for her. She knew she’d still have a job if she refused, but that it would be a disappointment to Dwayne if she did. She knew in her gut that her life would also change drastically.

The comfort zone she inhibited was something she didn’t want to move from. She had made a life for herself, a comfortable, somewhat happy life, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to take the next step in her career.

Turning around, she sat back down in the black leather chair. Patience and contentment graced Dwayne’s dark face as he rested his chin on his still templed fingers. She still didn’t know how the man did it. That look that made anyone do what he wanted.

Drawing in a long deep breath, she expelled it slowly. “I really can’t say no to you, can I, Dwayne?”

The man smiled with a bit of smugness. “No. And once you’re done with this interview, you’ll understand yourself a lot more and understand why I am the man that I am.”

The comment was confusing, as if he was making it all about him and not JC.

This was going to be an interesting interview if Dwayne’s words were an indication.
