Living with Embers: (Son of Rain #4) Page 29

by Michelle Irwin

“God, you’re so stupid, you idiot!” Ava’s voice screeched out the words.

Evie gave me a look that echoed the weariness I felt.

“You’re the idiot, idiot!” David snapped back.

“What’s going on?” I asked, wondering if I was going to regret the question the instant it came out.

“David got blood on my dress.” Ava indicated down toward the hem of her floor-length dress.

“It’s okay. We can—” Evie’s sentence was cut off when David spoke again.

“I didn’t do anything. You were the one who bled on yourself.”

I glanced between them for a moment, before grabbing Evie’s hand and drawing her backward. “They’ll work it out,” I said.

“They might kill each other first. I’ll be glad when this whole puberty thing is done.”

“There is one good thing,” I added.

  “What’s that?”

“Well, they need to go on their retreat. Which means, for the next week and a bit, they’re Eth and Toni’s problem.”

“Hmm, I like the sound of that.” Clearly Evie agreed with my assessment that, after thirteen years of raising the most special kids on the planet largely on our own, we deserved a little break.

I walked my hands up her arm before caressing her shoulder. “And we have the house to ourselves.”

“I really like the sound of that.”

“What do you say we cut off early and leave all this to Eth?” I suggested.

Evie didn’t respond with words, just spun in my hold and pressed her lips hard against mine.

  “That’s gross!” Ava complained.

“You’d think they’d at least get a room,” David agreed, obviously on her side again now that they had a common enemy.

“We have a room,” Evie said. “In fact, for the next week, we have the entire house.”

“Ew, please don’t have sex in our room,” Ava said, crinkling her nose up.

“I don’t want to think about them having sex at all,” David said.

“You’re right, barf city. Let’s go find Uncle Eth and Aunt Toni. I’m sure one of them will have a suggestion for getting this stain out.”

I considered the fact that I hadn’t seen Eth or Toni for a little while. “You might want to hold off on searching for your uncle just yet,” I said.

  “Ugh, gross,” Ava said.

“Why don’t you and I try to get the stain off,” Evie suggested before leading her away.

I sat on a chair near David. “You’re going to look after your sister on this trip, aren’t you? Make sure no one dares go near her or call her names for the way she looks.”

“If anyone tries to hurt her, they’ll have to deal with me.” He paused for a moment before laughing. “Well, they’d have to deal with her first, and she’s probably twice as scary sometimes.”

I found myself laughing along. “She certainly is her mother’s daughter.”

I looked over to where Evie and her mini-me were sitting in conversation similar to the one I was having with David. I clapped him on his shoulder. “I’m glad that whatever else happens, you’ll always have each other.”

“Me too, Dad,” he said. “Me too.”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more
through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.

Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.
