  "Well, yeah but ––"

"No buts. Of course, a few treatments at your girlfriend's spa would be a nice treat occasionally."

"I think I can arrange that," I said with a smile. Then I kissed her and said, "Thanks."

"Make sure Kari understands. That hornet's nest you opened brought down a lot of the worst people on three continents. They don't forget so keep your eyes open. It may not be over for you yet."

  "Not over...?"

"Not by a long shot. There's always someone doing that kind of shit and whoever comes next may remember you two. Oh, I almost forgot. Here," she handed me a note, "take the diamonds you hid to this guy and he'll wire twenty million dollars into your bank account. It's the reward for..., well..., it's the reward for what you did. And the income tax has already been paid so it's all yours."

  "Twenty million..., are you serious?"

  "Yup!"

"Oh my God...! Twenty million! What about the police? Are Kari and I going to be arrested?"

"I took care of that. As far as they're concerned, you two were never here. Just get back to your lives."

"Valerie..., how did you..., oh, never mind, no questions right?"

  "Right!"

When I got out of the car, Blinky was waiting. She patted my shoulder and said, "Your chariot awaits," and pointed to the other ambulance.

"You really like Kimmy don't you Val," Blinky said when she got in and closed the door. "We're not supposed to get involved. You know the rules."

"Yeah Blink, I do. She's nice but..., if you noticed, she has exactly the profile and talents we can use. Maybe she'll come to work for us someday."

"Yeah..., right...! Those two are rich and very much in love. Why would she work for the government?"

"Motivation and morals Blink, motivation and morals; we'll keep in touch with her."

Blinky looked at Valerie and shook her head. "I think you just want to protect her. What're you going to do when we get reassigned..., call her every day?"

Valerie scowled. "We'll just keep in touch. Besides, I'd like to try some of those beauty treatments at that spa they have."

"Ha! You're really getting into this girl thing aren't you. Watch out! You might get addicted to it."

Later, at the hospital, they were running tests on Kari to see if she had a concussion and I was in the waiting room praying for Alfred. They were operating on him and we didn't know if he'd live or die. An hour passed and a doctor wearing scrubs came in but his message was for the woman sitting next to me. Then, it was more waiting, for both of us. She sat back down with tears in her eyes and we started talking. Her name was Anna, an attorney who, it turned out, lived three houses away from Kari's estate. That conversation started a dialog that lasted for years.
