The Awakening

“BEA!” I could hear Jake yell.

Out of nowhere, Jett appeared. He had a sword in his hands. “You should have killed me last night when you had the chance.”

He knelt in front of me. He placed the blade on my stomach and I could feel his magic running through it. It was slimy and black, I never felt magic like his before.

“It will be over soon.” He said, and then he ran the blade through me.

  Twenty-Five

Rage seared through me as I ran towards Bea and that man with a smug look on his face.

I pushed my magic out in front of me, creating a double-edged Katana.

His eyes came to my face, his smile was sickening.

I brought my weapon up above my head. Years of training kicked in. I let the training flow through me as I pulled my weapon through strike after strike.

He was good, the man with the greasy smile. He blocked my weapon, pulling it out of my hands. He flipped it once, showing off.

“Thought you could use a bit of a show, before I filet you like I did her. At least you were a bit of a competition she was worthless.”

The anger raged through me as the words flowed out of his mouth.

“At least you will…” He said before a loud cry ripped through the battlefield. I felt the familiar wind as Zeeda landed between him and I. I could feel her anger as she looked behind me towards Bea.

Zeeda roared, and I could feel her pain and her agony. The man’s jaw dropped open as Zeeda screamed in his face. All eyes on the field turned towards Zeeda.

I could see Bea’s mom across the field. Her eyes fell to her daughter lying dead on the battlefield.

“Jake get behind me.” Zeeda said to me. “Is he the one?”

I knew what she meant without having to say it. “Yes, Zeeda.” I said out loud. Loud enough for everyone to hear me. “He’s the one that killed Bea.”

Shocked gasps went through the clan, and the rebels as they realized I was speaking to the dragon.

Zeeda stalked towards the man. Her eyes were almost on fire as she opened her mouth. Smoke snaked out of her nose and her mouth. She growled, and the man who had been backing away was now shaking with fear.

I could see wetness spread across his thighs and if Bea hadn’t been laying dead, this would have been funny.

I kneeled beside her, my heart shattering.

Zeeda pinned the man to a tree. “Jake tell him who I am.” Zeeda insisted.

I took a breath and said again loud enough for everyone to hear. “This is Zeeda, Bea’s dragon.”

The man’s eyes darted towards Bea.

“Zeeda is very protective of those she loves, and you took Bea away from her.” I said. Zeeda growled as if in agreement.

The man sobbed, Zeeda snarled at him and reached out clawing him with a swift movement. His arm was nearly completely severed with just that one move.

There was a hushed reverence around the battlefield.

“Please, please don’t kill me.” The man sobbed. Zeeda had enough of him by this point and took a breath as she exhaled fire flew out of her mouth. Encasing the man in a smoky inferno.

His screams only lasted a few minutes, and then they stopped, and he was dead. Bea’s killer was slain.

Rushing to pull Bea into my arms.

Zeeda stopped breathing fire and came back over to Bea and me.

I held Bea close to me. Rocking her in my arms, tears falling down my face. I didn’t care who saw me cry.

The rebels pulled back, not wanting to have to deal with Zeeda, our very own fire-breathing dragon.

Zeeda laid down, circling Bea and me as she laid her head on Bea’s shoulder.

I leaned against her, and we mourned together. Clan members approached and Zeeda growled much more gently at them.

Bea’s mom came near, tears streaming down her face. She fell into Malcolm’s open arms and cried.

A single tear fell down Zeeda’s face and landed on Bea. I felt an overwhelming comfort as a brilliant gold light appeared. It wrapped around us and shone so brightly I had to close my eyes.

As the light faded, I looked at the clan everyone surrounded us at this point. People were crying, some down on their knees.

Bea would be missed I thought as people began sharing thoughts about Bea between the clan link.

Zeeda nuzzled my hand, I lifted it and petted her snout trying to comfort her as well. She nuzzled harder, and I finally looked down at her.

Her eyes were on Bea in my arms. I watched as Bea’s chest rose and fell. It continued to do so; I looked at the wound on her stomach where the blade went in and it was gone. My eyes went straight to Bea’s mom. “She’s breathing!”
