Falling for Her Stepbrother
A Steamy Short Story
“Hey, Kennedy, can I borrow your black nail polish?” Without knocking, my roommate Clara flung open my bedroom door and whirled in like a pink-haired Tinkerbell. I stuck out my foot to flip my half-packed suitcase closed. Even though we were best friends, Clara didn’t know about my collection of toys and books. Some things, especially my obsession with Domination and submission, were best kept a secret. She wouldn’t understand. No one would.
“Sure.” I grabbed the Midnight Magic polish from my collection and handed it to her.
Clara opened the bottle and inhaled. “God, I love the smell of new nail polish. So what happened at the Dean’s office?”
“A formal warning over a beer that wasn’t even mine.” I sank onto my bed and sighed. “They threatened to call Finn. Can you believe that? As if he’d give a shit. He’s too busy being Mr. Star Quarterback to care about his stepsister.”
“When was the last time you even talked to him?” Clara asked sinking to the floor.
“Dad’s funeral.” Pain pummeled my chest stealing my breath. He wasn’t my real dad, but he might as well have been. He’d been part of my life since I was eight and died when I turned twenty. He’d taught me how to ride a bike and how to drive. Yelled at me for poor grades and hugged me when I had a broken heart. Finn McIntyre, his son, my asshole stepbrother, was already playing football at college when our parents married. I didn’t see him very much back then, which suited me just fine. And when he went pro with the Georgia Elks, I saw him even less.
When we did see each other, he acted as if I was a huge disappointment, said it wasn’t good for his image when his sister danced topless on bars. It wasn’t like I’d actually danced topless. I had on a bra—okay, it was sheer. I’d just started NYU, got buzzed, and to make myself popular, I jumped on top of a bar and pulled up my shirt. Dumb, right? Someone took a video and it went viral on Facebook. The gossip rags ran with it—Finn McIntyre’s Wild Child Sister Shows her Super Bowls.
My mom passed away when I was fourteen, which all but shredded my soul. For a while, grief convinced me I’d end up on the street, but Dad said he loved me as if I was his own flesh and blood. After mom passed, Dad put all of his energy into coaching the high school football team. He didn’t remarry, and I often wished he had met someone new. He said being a good coach and dad was enough for him. When we found out about his cancer, it was too late to do anything, and it killed him before we even had time to process how ill he was. Not even Finn’s millions could save him. Not even my prayers.
I turned my head in Clara’s direction. “Finn has other things to do and care about. Like which model he’s fucking or what product he’s endorsing.”
“Poor you, it must really suck having to spend two weeks with a God.” Clara swept a polish-loaded brush over her toenails.
“Save your sarcasm. And anyway, staying at his house isn’t the same as spending two weeks with him. I don’t think he’ll be around. I’m sure he has training or whatever it is quarterbacks do over the summer. If he stays out of my way, I’ll stay out of his.”
“What I wouldn’t give to spend a few weeks with someone like Finn McIntyre.” She woke up the screensaver on her phone—a photo of a half-naked Finn—and waved it in my direction. “I’d let him fuck me until I couldn’t walk.”
“Eugh! No way. Yuck. He looks like a wannabe porn star in that picture.” There was no denying Finn was six-five of sexiness. It wasn’t like I couldn’t see why Clara, and every other woman on the planet, thought he was hot. He was. But he was also arrogant, cocky, and distant.
We used to be so tight. He would play games with me, carry me on his shoulders, and, when I was a kid, he would even play Barbie dress-up games with me when he was home. We’d play ball, watch games, and he’d tell me all about his life on the team. But when I turned seventeen, something changed. He wouldn’t even throw a ball with me. It was as if he couldn’t stand me. For a while, my heart ached every time I saw him, and I wanted what we had back. I sent him emails and texts asking what I’d done, but he blew me off and said I was being a drama queen. Bullshit. Animosity and spite filled our relationship now. He hated me. I despised him.
In the past three years, there was only one time when we’d lowered our barriers. The night after Dad’s funeral Finn held me tight. Being in his arms felt warm and secure, and I’d cried myself to sleep with my head in his lap. The next morning, when I woke, he was already gone. He left a note saying to call if I needed anything. I wanted to call and scream that I needed him to make everything okay. But I didn’t, he was too busy with his girlfriend-of-the-month to worry about me.
“Earth to Kennedy.” Clara snapped her fingers, pulling me out of my daydreams. “Suck it up and get it over with. Pretty soon we’ll be sauntering down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées with cute French boys begging for dates.”
“This is very true.” Two weeks from Saturday, Clara and I were meeting in London then going to Paris before backpacking around Europe. Even though Mom had left me enough money to pay for college, all year I’d worked in a coffee shop to fund my summer fun. Finn’s bank balance held close to nine zeros, but I’d rather ask him to throw a game than ask him for money.
A few months ago, Finn sold our family home and had everything packed into boxes. So before I left for my trip, I had to sort through my mom’s things. It was going to be emotional and messy and something I dreaded.
“I might make the trip down to Georgia to visit you for a few days.” Clara wiggled her eyebrows.
“You don’t stand a chance. Big booty Judies aren’t his thing.”
“Look who’s talking.” She grabbed a pink pillow and threw it at me. I caught it and threw it back.
“What? It’s true. You’re not an Amazonian runway model. Neither am I. If you don’t have legs up to your ears, he’s not going to give you a second look.”
“Such a shame. Doesn’t he know a woman with some junk in her trunk is much more fun than a bony assed model who doesn’t know what a decent meal is?”
“Nope.”
Clara screwed the lid back on the polish and set it on my nightstand. “My ride’s gonna be here in five.” She swooped down and pulled me into a hug. “Love ya. See you in two weeks for a summer we’ll never forget.”
“Right back atcha’, babe.” I hugged Clara tight and half wished she was coming with me to hold my hand. “Wish me luck on surviving the next two weeks. It’s going to be a living hell.”
“Living with Finn McIntyre is not hell. It’s a fantasy come true.”
“Whatever.”
****
The wrought iron gates to Finn’s mansion were closed. Of course they were. Why would they be open? I mean it wasn’t like I hadn’t called to say I’d be arriving in ten minutes. I put my car in park and counted to three. With a composure I didn’t feel, I opened the car door, made my way to the intercom, and jammed my fin
ger into the buzzer. No answer. I pressed it again, harder this time. Still no answer.
“Damn him.” No doubt some woman’s thighs were muffling his ears. Grabbing my phone from the pocket of my cutoffs, I dialed his number and waited…and waited. On the tenth ring, he finally picked up.
“Can you open the damn gate? It’s over a hundred degrees out here.” I hung up before he could answer and hopped into my car.
I’d never been to Finn’s house; I guess he hadn’t deemed me worthy until now. For Christmas, he invited me to his New York apartment, but I declined and went to Washington State with Clara. And when his team made it to the Super Bowl for the sixth time, he gave me tickets to watch from the family and friends’ box. I declined that offer, too and watched the game from behind my books. As for the gold-dust tickets, I auctioned them off and donated the money to a breast cancer charity. The nurses had helped my mom a ton during her illness and helped me handle my grief afterwards.
My heart squeezed at the thought of my mom, and I sniffed back the tears blurring my eyes. Now wasn’t the time to get emotional. I had to stay strong. Hold everything inside. These next two weeks were going to suck and getting emotional would drain me of everything I needed to deal with Finn.
The gate squeaked open allowing me to enter Finn’s personal paradise. The Georgia sun beat down blinding my eyes, and I drove slowly through luscious green grounds. After driving up a leafy driveway for ten minutes, I parked my dusty Nissan in front of his house and cut the engine. A white monstrosity dominated the beautiful surroundings. Finn was one person; why in the hell would he need something so big? Did he honestly need twenty bedrooms? There was being greedy and there was being a materialistic jerk.
Stepping out of my car, I was overcome with a sense that something was about to begin and something was about to end. In a way, sorting through my mom’s belongings was the end of my old life and the beginning of my new one. As soon as I was done, Finn and I would be out of each other’s lives. He wouldn’t have to deal with me ever again, or me him. In time, he’d become a memory, another chapter in the book of my life. I stared up at the house and my legs decided now was a perfect time to shake.
