Cole was there.
As were Scott and the boys. They were pacing around the lobby, worried wrinkles on their faces. They all stopped when they saw me.
“Melrose!” Cole exclaimed as he ran for me. I finally let the tears fall as he embraced me in his safe arms. I was home now, I was okay. “What happened to you? We were all so worried.” They all huddled around, eager to hear the answer.
“I was taken by a fan,” I mumbled.
They were all due a real explanation and I would give it to them when I could speak cohesively again. Right now, all I wanted to do was feel safe and calm down.
Chapter Nine
“Come on, it’s our last night in New York City,” Cole said, trying to coax me out of bed. “You have to go out to dinner with me.”
“But it’s cozy here,” I whined. And there were no crazy fans in my hotel room. Even though it had been three days and Amber was getting treatment for her delusions, it still didn’t feel entirely safe anywhere.
“I promise you’ll have a good time. I won’t let anything happen to you.” He always knew what was on my mind, it was like a freaky skill he had.
I wanted to curl back into bed but I couldn’t resist the pleading look on his face. I would do anything for Cole, including missing out on an evening watching television. “Fine. Give me a minute to get dressed.”
Cole waited impatiently, continually checking his watch while I got dressed. I threw on my favorite Walmart semi-casual dress and put on some makeup. Knowing there was a good likelihood I would get photographed these days made me pay more attention to my makeup routine.
“You look beautiful. Can we please go now?” Cole said when I stood in front of him.
“Okay, okay.”
Cole didn’t tell me where we were going so I followed along obligingly. After driving for a while, he insisted on putting a blindfold on me.
I let him.
But I wouldn’t let anyone else.
The world went blank as he secured the blindfold around my head. The car stopped shortly afterwards. Cole led me out and then guided me along as I walked blindly.
We went up in an elevator.
Stepped outside.
I could feel the breeze of the wind around me, pleasantly cool on my cheeks. Finally, he stopped me. The sound of cars beeping and traffic somewhere in the distance was all that I could hear over my own breathing.
Cole took off the blindfold. “Welcome to dinner.”
We were standing on top of the Empire State Building. A table with two chairs was on the platform with the city over one thousand feet below us. The table was completely set with a white tablecloth and silverware set out.
“This is where we’re eating?” I asked. I didn’t even know how this was possible. The number of people involved in this single dinner was ridiculous.
Cole really loved me to go to this much trouble.
“Only the best for my girl,” Cole whispered in my ear, sending a shiver down my spine.
He led me over to the table and held my chair out for me while I sat. We had a private waiter, there just to serve us dinner. The food was amazing, complete with chocolate soufflé for dessert.
The city twinkled like stars around us, making it feel like we were sitting on a cloud in the middle of the galaxy. The moment I met Cole, I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Every day he made me feel even luckier.
After dinner, I wandered over to the edge of the landing and looked out on all the millions of people below. Cole came up behind me, hugging me. I leaned into his embrace and closed my eyes, trying to capture this moment so I could remember it forever.
“I have something for you,” Cole said, his breath skimming my ear.
He reached around and held something in front of me. I couldn’t see his face so his expression wasn’t giving anything away.
I opened the small box and found a ring inside. It was gold with the shape of a heart in the middle. Tiny musical notes were engraved on the surface. “It’s a promise ring. I know we’re too young to get married, but I want you to know I’m committed to you. You’re my future, Melrose. I don’t want anyone else in my entire life but you. This is my promise.”
I wanted to cry it was so beautiful. “I love it, thank you.” I spun around in his arms so I could face him. “I make the same promise to you. There will never be anyone else. We were made purely for each other.”
We kissed.
Our hearts joined.
Forever.
Until all the stars fall.
