The Right Mistake

The girls also loved seeing their grandpa. Never once did my dad treat them any different or deny them love and affection. He stepped right in, introducing himself as Grandpa and loved spoiling them rotten. The day we brought Berlin home, he came by to welcome her. And even though she wouldn’t go anywhere near him, he continued to try and try and try some more, until one day she walked up to him and grabbed his finger to lead him down the hall. Gage and I followed as she led him into their playroom. He sat on the floor beside her, and they played with her blocks for hours. She’d build something and knock it down, only to start all over again. From that moment on, anytime my dad came by, she was right by his side.

“Has your dad told you what she wants? She keeps calling every day.”

“She’s nosey. She told him she wants to see the girls. Over my dead body. She will never lay eyes on them. Ever.”

  “Whatever you want, sweetheart.”

“That’s right. Happy wife happy life there, mister.”

“You don’t scare me,” he said as he nudged my arm.

“I’m going to go get something to drink. You want anything?” I asked as I stood. My body swayed at the sudden movement, and I had to grab ahold of the railing before I fell over.

“You okay?” Gage stood and held onto my arms to make sure I didn’t fall.

“Yeah. Stood up too quickly, that’s all,” I said as I brushed him off. He was such a worry wart sometimes.

I walked into the house and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. Opening the lid, I gulped down half the bottle. The date on the calendar caught my eye as I was about to head back out to Gage and the girls.

A star was beside the date for the Saturday before.

There was no cause for panic, but just for shits and giggles, I decided to go and pee on the stick anyway.

Three glasses of water and four pregnancy tests later, I stared down at each test in shock.

  No fucking way.

All four of them showed a plus sign.

All four of them showed that we were pregnant.

“Avery,” I heard Gage shout from the backdoor.

“Coming,” I screamed back at him.

I placed all the tests in the back pocket of my jeans and grabbed another bottle of water so he wouldn’t be suspicious.

“Slow down before you fall, Berlin,” I called out from the sliding glass door. She was running pretty fast but she was clumsy on a good day. I don’t think a day has gone by where she hasn’t tripped over both of her feet. Especially when she’s in a hurry.

Carefully, I walked down the steps and sat down beside Gage.

“Hey, Daddy, how would you like to add one more to the bunch?”

“Did you get a call about another child?”

“I got another call alright. Four missed calls to be exact,” I told him, trying not to laugh at the hidden innuendo.

“Why so many? Is there an urgent situation?”

  “You could say that again.”

“Do we need to leave and go get the child right now? I can get my mom to come over and watch the girls,” he suggested, and I knew then that I should drop the charade because he seemed rather worried.

“We’ll have to wait about another eight months or so. This one isn’t quite done growing just yet,” I replied as I pulled the tests out my pocket and held them up for him to see.

“Are you serious right now? Like this isn’t a joke,” he said as he inspected each one.

“Not a joke. Looks like a miracle happened.” I smiled over at him with tears in my eyes.

  A miracle indeed.

Seven and a half months later, we welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world named Denver Chase Rivers. His sisters were over joyed and his mommy and daddy couldn’t believe how quickly their world became complete.

Gage Rivers was the best right mistake I’d ever made in my life.
