An Earl For Hire

Page 28

by Bethany M. Sefchick

It wasn't always easy. In the weeks after their marriage, rumors had still dogged them, particularly the nasty ones spread by Lady Colchester and Lady Frostburn. Even with the assistance of the London gossips, questions remained. They likely always would and he, like Miri, had come to accept that as simply the way of things. At least until a new and bigger scandal came along.

However, through his newly formed friendship with the Duke of Candlewood - courtesy of his new brother in law Lord Raynecourt, of course - Will discovered that he had many allies amongst the ton, more than he would have imagined. A word dropped in the appropriate ear and doors opened and new friendships were formed with many simply viewing Will and Miri as star-crossed lovers being kept apart by others. Specifically others who were jealous of the love they shared.

It was a prettied up version of the truth, but Will didn't care about that either. All he cared about was that he had Miri beside him each day and each night. The rest? In the end, it didn't matter.

"Wake up, love," Will coaxed his lovely wife as the citrus-hued rays of dawn began to light the summer sky. "You said that you did not wish to miss this."

Sighing as she usually did when she first awoke, Miri slowly came awake and then settled back into her husband's embrace so that she might watch the sunrise over Seldon Park. For years her brother had been spinning tales of how extraordinary the view was at this hour. Now that she was here in person, she did not wish to miss a single sunrise. For though it would kill her to admit it, her brother had been right. The sunrise each morning was more spectacular than the last and not to be missed.

"I love you, Will," Miri whispered as a matter of course. She said the words frequently so that he would hopefully soon forget the hateful words she had thrown at him that long ago day at the modiste's. He claimed that he had already forgotten but she knew better. Not to mention that she still felt a bit guilty for not trusting him and for uttering such horrible accusations. Words like that cut to the bone, so she was doing her best to make amends. Telling her husband that she loved him each chance she had was part of her plan.

Will nuzzled her neck. "And I love you, Miri. I never knew I could love anyone as much as I love you."

She knew he meant those words just as much as she meant hers. Theirs was not a perfect marriage. Given how they had begun, they still stumbled at times, but theirs was a real marriage and one that would stand the test of time. Forever, if she had her way.

"Perhaps you could find room in your heart for another?" she teased. She was not yet with child, but they had both been hoping. She had gone to see Dr. Hastings a few weeks ago and he saw no reason that she could not have a child. Her mother's physician had been wrong, at least according to Hastings and she trusted the man implicitly. To that end, she and Will had been coupling each chance they had to be alone. And sometimes even when they weren't as alone as they should have liked.

If her calculations were correct, her courses were due to arrive soon. She was praying they did not come for they both wanted a nursery full of children. The best way to achieve that, of course, was with what had quickly become one of her favorite activities. For a woman who had been a stranger to passion not all that long ago, she had been a rather quick study and was now nearly insatiable. At least according to Will. As he was the expert in the matter, she trusted his word.

"If God sees fit to bless us in that way," he replied as he reached down between her legs to test her readiness, "then I shall have more than enough room."

"Excellent," Miri sighed as she allowed Will to tug her back down under the covers as he rose over her, his erection hot and firm at her entrance. "I do like the sound of that."

Smiling down at her, Will looked at peace and Miri's heart filled with joy for all that she had. "So do I, love," he whispered. "So do I."

And that was the last thing either of them said for a very long time.

Lord Daniel Weston, the new Marquess of Lansdale is something of a curiosity. Born in England before being whisked off to America by his mother when he was a mere child, Daniel is a mix of both the land of his birth and his adopted homeland and not at all the sort of peer the stiff English society is accustomed to dealing with. However his golden boy looks and suave ways forgive many a sin, even the many rough and tumble ways he learned on the streets of Baltimore. Except that beneath the shining surface is a part of the man that no one knows and not everyone would like if they did.

The recipient of one of the highest honors a debutante can aspire to, Lady Anna Davenport is thoroughly enjoying being celebrated by Society. Having lived in poverty most of her life, she is unable to hide the thrill of being fawned over by eligible young gentleman and toasted by Society matrons at every turn. However her good fortune only lasts for the length of the Season so she must select a husband - and soon. However she quickly finds that she has eyes for two men - one appropriate husband material and the other far from it.

Can Daniel prove that he has conquered his demons and is worthy of a woman's love? Will Anna choose with her head or her heart? And will their decisions be ones they can live with for the rest of their lives?
