Mark shook his head. “Are you kidding? I’m quitting while I’m ahead.”
Epilogue
“One more push, Nora, and your daughter will be here to greet you.”
“Easy for you to say!” she growled at her doctor, who merely grinned.
“You can do it, honey,” Mark encouraged cheerfully. He stood behind her, bracing her up each time she needed to push.
She shot him a look that should have turned him into ashes on the spot.
“You think so? Then you do it.” She sounded a growl worthy of a horror film. “And stop acting so damn cheerful.” She geared herself up.
“Okay, a little more. And now.” The doctor grinned.
A mewling cry sounded.
The doctor held up a tiny wiggling body and gently placed the baby on Nora’s stomach.
“Mr. and Mrs. Walker, I’d like you to meet your daughter.”
Nora burst out crying as she cradled the baby. “She’s so beautiful, isn’t she, Mark? Mark?” She looked around.
The nurse chuckled. “I’d say our new father is out cold. I’ll get an ammonia capsule,” she told the doctor.
Nora looked down at the floor where Mark lay. The nurse crouched down, broke an ammonia capsule under his nose and waited as he came to.
Mark immediately jumped to his feet and bent over the tiny bundle Nora held.
“So beautiful,” he murmured, kissing Nora deeply. “Both of you are so beautiful.”
“Are you all right?” she asked, amused.
“Just a little light-headed,” he explained. He looked at Nora. “Any delivery I’ve assisted was because the baby was ready then and there to come out. But I have to say the last seventeen hours was more than anyone should go through. I’m not sure I can go through this again.”
Nora patted his cheek. “We’ll discuss it later, sweetheart. For now, say hello to Sara Evelyne Walker.”
