  His nervous frown collapsed. “Okay,” he said, nodding. “That’s all I need to know.” He finished lacing his skates and knelt down to tighten hers. Then he stood and pulled her to her feet. “Ready?”

  “Paul, you understand that I need to go very slowly?”

  “Are we talking skating here?”

  “That, too.”

  “Gotcha. But I intend to stick close by you, Mariah, and I won’t let you get hurt.”

  “Now are we talking skating?” she asked, smiling.

  “That, too.”

  “You can’t make that guarantee, Paul. Getting hurt is the risk we take when we choose to participate in life. But the alternative is to sit it out on the sidelines, and I know there’s no joy in that.”

  He nodded. “So, you’re ready to give this a try?”

  Mariah gave her wobbly ankles a rueful glance, then linked her arm through his. “Damn the torpedoes,” she said, pushing off.
