INFLUENCED: A Good Girl, Bad Boy Love Story

Page 28

by Keyes, Janae

I’d found happiness and joy, I’d fallen in love and gotten married, now, I was having a baby, all in the course of a summer, the best summer of my life. My “bad boy”, had changed my life for the better.

  Three Years Later

“Ollie. Look up there. Who is that?” I cooed.

“Mommmmmmmy,” our son squealed, pointing at the beautiful woman in her cap and gown walking across the stage to accept her diploma.

“Doesn’t she look beautiful?” I asked our little boy.

“Mommy bootiful!” Oliver mimicked, sticking his thumb back into his mouth.

“Aren’t you a big boy? Didn’t we talk about that thumb sucking, you silly little boy,” I lightly scolded him.

“I not a little boy. I am big boy daddy!”

“You certainly are, squirt,” I laughed, tickling him, drawing the attention of nearby watchers.

The last few years had been an absolute whirlwind. When Megan had told me about our soon to be little boy, I had been in shock, and then, an overwhelming feeling of pride and joy washed over me. I couldn’t explain the way my heart grew within my chest. I didn’t think my love for Megan could ever be eclipsed, but the day our son was born was the day I realized no one else in the entire world could ever hold my heart like my son.

The three of us moved into a small, but quaint, house outside of Decatur. Both of us were doing what we loved and I was positive no one else in the world could hold a candle to my happiness.

Megan was working on a new branch of Grant, Reese, and Reese where we lived, doing pro bono cases in family law. Her internship had been rough on everyone when she chose to do it outside the family law firm, but it was for the best overall.

I finally stopped beating around the bush and told my parents I had no interest in law. They weren’t surprised, and had a nice laugh at my expense when I told them how nervous I had them to tell them.

“Spencer, we’ve known your entire life you weren’t made to be a lawyer. Don’t get us wrong, you’d make a fine district attorney, but your heart won’t ever be in it,” my mom had chuckled out.

“Your mom is right, son. What are you thinking about getting into?” My dad had followed up.

I told them my plans to go back to school and get the last remaining credits I needed to be a high school history teacher. The thought of imparting my knowledge onto kids who couldn’t give two shits was just too good to pass up. Luckily, I had been given a job two weeks after getting my license, and it was with an amazing group of excellent and gifted children. Kids who, unlike me, loved coming to school, and we’re interested in every lesson. I spent every weekend coming up with new lesson plans to keep them interested, and engaged, and at the end of last semester, all of my students had passed with honors from my class. Next year, I was set to have double the amount of students, and I was thrilled.

Lucinda watched Oliver while Megan and I worked, but during the summer, I got my little boy all to myself. Every day, we went on an adventure and I taught him something new. He was the brightest kid in pre-school and I was the proudest father alive.

Not everything was roses and sunshine for us, Megan and I climbed a steep hill during her pregnancy. I’ll never forget the day she came home, crying, and incoherent.

  “Sp-sp-spencer.”

I could hear the hysterics even from upstairs. My heart pounded loudly in my chest. What could be wrong? Was it the baby? I scrambled downstairs, almost tripping on the last few steps, and pulled my distraught Peaches into my arms.

“Megan, baby. What is it? Is it the baby? Are you ok? Talk to me please!”

“I-- Oh my God, Spencer. He did it again!”

“Who? He did what?” I pleaded, with her.

“Your b-brother,” she wailed, her body shaking uncontrollably in my arms.

“What did Chase do to you?” I screamed, cringing when Megan startled and jumped.

  “Not me, Stacey!”

Stacey? Stacey? “Wait, Stacey from the law firm? I thought she had the hots for him?” I asked, clearly confused.

Walking her over to our couch, I grabbed the box of tissues and cradled her in my arms while she attempted to dry her tears.

“She did,” Megan picked back up, answering my question. “Dad said that they even went out on a few dates. I guess he made a pass at her, and she told him she wanted to take things slow. He didn’t like that,” she whispered, an involuntary tremor snaking through her.

  “What happened, Peaches?”

“He followed her home, and he knocked on her door, and she tried to turn him away, but--but---”

“That’s enough, Peaches. You don’t have to tell me anymore.”

I held her all night until she had fallen asleep. Once she was nestled safely in our bed, I called my dad. Stacey had confided in some of the other interns what had happened, and they had told my parents. When my dad asked Stacey if she wanted to press charges, she had been adamant that she didn’t and she just wanted everything to go away.

When I had told Megan that bit of news the next morning, her tears had turned into angry, bitter words, and the next thing I knew, we were surrounded in a legal battle. Megan was almost to the time limit on the Statute of Limitations for what my brother had done to her, and this incident seemed to propel her forward.

With the lawsuit fully in place, other girls, including Stacey, came forward to tell their tales. And with two days before the birth of our son, I held my wife as she cried when Chase was sentenced to prison for a minimum of twelve years with no chance of early release. He may have been my brother, but he stopped being blood the day I found out he put his hands on my wife. Megan, Oliver, and my parents were my family now.

As if my thoughts could summon them, I looked up to see the graduation ceremony had finished, and both my mom and dad were walking right to us.

“Gamma! Gampa!!” Oliver belted out, squirming to jump from my arms.

When they were close enough to him, I set him on the ground and laughed as he hobbled over to Heather and she scooped him up in his arms.

“Ollie! Oh, Ollie. Gamma missed you!” she cooed, showering him with kisses.

“Gamma! No kisses. I’m a big boy, and big boys don’t need kisses.”

“Spencer! What are you teaching this child?” my mom scolded me as I wrapped my arms around her and placed a kiss on her cheek.

“Hi, mom. Hi, dad,” I said, taking his hand for a shake, and pulling him in for a bear hug.”

“She looked so beautiful up there, didn’t she?” my mom commented, a tear falling from her eye.

“She did, mom. I’m so proud of her.”

Just then, the object of my adoration caught my eye from across the room. Her hips swayed as she passed by people, stopping to say hi for just a moment in her quest to get to her family.

“Ollie,” I said, drawing his attention away from Heather. “I’m a big boy, right?” He nodded his head, popping his thumb back into his mouth. “Well, I have to tell you, I really want to get a kiss from your mommy, but you said big boys don’t need kisses.” He nodded again, waiting for me to get to the point. “Can I let mommy give me kisses, Ollie?”

With his thumb half out of his mouth, he nodded vigorously, his head bouncing up and down, his mother’s eyes shining back at me.

“Thanks, Squirt,” I winked at him and turned back to face my beautiful wife.

This morning, we had made love after deciding it was time to try for child number two, and right now, all I could think about was trying again. Practice makes perfect, and all that jazz.

Striding toward her, I noticed she was talking with her father and his new girlfriend, Beth. Beth was sweet and good for Dexter. After the trial had ended, Dexter had told Marian he wanted a divorce. Things were amicable, between everyone, but Marian was definitely the outcast in the family, and unless she changed her ways, she always would be.

She didn’t see me approach, which gave me the upper h
and to wrap my arms around her midsection and pull her in close.

“What’s say we blow this hot dog stand, and get to baby making?” I whispered into her ear, so no one else could hear me.

“Spencer!” she squealed, turning in my arms and giving me a chaste kiss on the lips before turning back to her father.

“Spencer,” her father pulled me from my naughty thoughts. “You’re looking well, but where on earth is my grandson?”

Taking his hand and giving it a hearty shake, I answered with a laugh. “I believe he is getting mauled by Heather’s kisses.”

Everyone joined in on the laughter as we watched Heather attempt to kiss Oliver on every inch of his face.

“Megan?” I familiar voice sounded from next to us.

“Hello, mom. Thank you for coming,” Megan answered Marian politely, accepting the flowers she was handing over.

“I’m so very proud of you, sweetheart,” she said, her tone clipped, but friendly.

“Thank you,” Megan responded, giving her mother a small hug.

The sadness was evident in Marian’s eyes as she watched Heather and Oliver interact. Since Oliver had been born, Marian had only seen him twice. I had put my foot down about them spending time together. I never wanted my child to feel even an ounce of what Marian had made Megan feel, and luckily for me, my wife had agreed.

Both Megan and I hoped, for Oliver’s sake, that one day, Marian would remove the stick lodged up her ass, and come to her senses, but we were still waiting, and until that day arrived, Marian would see Oliver as little as possible.

“I have to get back to the office, Megan, but I wanted to give you congratulations,” Marian said, her eyes still fixed on our son.

“Ok, mom. Thanks again for coming.”

“Marian,” I spoke up, her body turning back around to face us. I hoped to God I wouldn’t regret my next words. “Would you like to come to dinner and spend some time with your grandson?”

I was putting it out there, hoping Megan wouldn’t be angry with me, but the look in Marian’s eyes was all Megan and I needed to know.

Tears streamed down Marian’s face as she nodded her head and looked to Megan for confirmation.

“We’d love to have you, mom, and I know Oliver would really like to see his Nana.”

“Thank you,” was all she whispered before she turned away from us and walked toward the parking lot.

At some point in the interaction, I hadn’t even noticed her father and Beth leave, but now it was just Megan and I, surrounded by a room full of graduates and family.

“That was a really sweet thing you did for my mom, Spencer,” Megan sighed, throwing her arms around my neck.

“I hoped this would be the outcome. I didn’t know how angry you would have been with me if she had been nasty about the invitation. I just thought, with the way she was looking at Oli, that maybe we should start letting them get to know each other.”

“You’re so amazing, Spencer. I love you so much,” Megan whispered, her lips inches from my own.

  “And I love you.”

Our kiss was sweet and simple. A mating of two pairs of lips and a world of love and devotion. Every kiss with her was breathtaking and awe inspiring, even after three years of marriage.

“Moe!” Another familiar voice sounded from the crowd, breaking us apart. “Come on, girl. We got practice in forty minutes!” Joe shouted, running up to us.

The dance studio Megan taught at was down the block from our home, and last year both Megan and Jaylesha bought it and became the owner operators of Dancers R Us. The waiting list to be taught by either woman was long, and although dancing took away from our time together, I knew I’d never ask her to quit something she loved so much.

“I’m sorry, Joe, I can’t today, I have another appointment” Megan said, producing a fake pouty face.

  “What appointment?”

“What appointment?” Both Joe and I said in unison.

“Well, I gotta find out how long until Jaylesha becomes a God Mother again,” Megan smirked, turning back to me with a wicked grin on her face.

“W-What?” I stammered. “How did--. Wait--. When did--. Peaches. I know I’m good, but isn’t a bit early to think you’re pregnant after this morning?”

My brain did flip flops, my heart growing again at just the thought of another beautiful baby with my perfect wife.

“I’m sorry, Spencer. I may have fibbed a little bit. When I asked you this morning about having another kid, it wasn’t because I wanted to start trying. It was because we already are.”

Just like the first time she told me, I couldn’t contain myself and I picked her up and spun her around in front of every graduate present and every family member.

“Spencer! Put me down, you goofball!” Megan laughed.

“I’m gonna be a daddy again!” I shouted, oblivious to everything around me but her and I, as I dropped to my knees and put my ear to her stomach.

“Yes you are, Daddy,” she laughed, grabbing onto my hair and pulling me back to my feet. “That doesn’t mean we can’t pretend like we’re practicing for another one, does it?” She asked me, lust and want filling her pupils.

“Fuck, Megan,” I whispered, my dick twitching in my pants. “Look what you’re doing to me.”

She giggled, her laugh making my heart skip. “What can I say, Spencer? I’m a bad influence.”

“You certainly are, Peaches. You certainly are.”

  A Note From the Authors

  Shannon -

As always I am truly humbled and blessed by every single one of you who has taken the time from their busy schedule to read the words that Janae and I have set on paper. Spencer was an absolute joy to write, but I couldn’t have done it without the brilliance of Janae Keyes and Megan. This book was a first for me. My first co-write and my first Interracial romance, and I have to tell you, I loved both of these aspects. Janae is a dream to work with and I love that my first co-write was with her. If you haven’t checked out any of her work, I highly encourage it!

This book is well outside of my typical writing style or genre, as you know if you’ve read my books, but it was a real treat to step out of my dark and twisty box and write something a little more light hearted (although--I bet it’s pretty obvious where my “influences” in this story lie)

Thank you all once again for supporting both Janae Keyes and myself with Influenced. Spencer and Megan are truly a magical couple, and I hope their story will stay in your heart for years to come!

  Janae -

I am so excited that Shannon and I were able to write this book and give it to you, the readers. Shannon was interested in exploring the world of IR, and I was all for it.

Megan and Spencer came alive, and I adore them. It didn't take much for us to create these very different characters. The idea was that Spencer wasn't exactly the typical "Bad Boy." He gained that label by not giving a shit what others thought of him. Megan, on the other hand, cared too much about what people thought of her, specifically her overbearing parents.

I want to thank Shannon for doing this project with me, I know I can be a bit of a drill sergeant, haha, but you managed to push through it with me.

To the readers, many of you may be fans of Shannons and others fans of mine. I hope you enjoyed us bringing our worlds together to create this book. Please, leave reviews and know we appreciate you.

But don’t despair, readers! Shannon does provide a plethora of HEA books for you to read if nitty-g
ritty isn’t your cup of tea.

She lives in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan with her cranky, yet super passionate, husband Vaughn, and her two ham-hock dachshunds- Emma and Jasper. She loves chocolate, peanut butter, and carbs (although she’s really trying to quit them).

Although Shannon isn’t 100% sure what subgenre of the romance world she plans on taking over and Dominating in the coming years, she knows that without her friends, family, and more importantly, her readers, she couldn’t do it without them!
