By the time he finished she was dishrag limp over his lap, physically and emotionally spent. Gently he lifted her up and cradled her against his chest, rubbing her hair and speaking soothing words as he reassured her of his love and commitment to her.
"I'm so sorry!" she said when she finally found her voice. "I should have known. I can't believe I left work like that." She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and looked at him from under tear-sodden lashes.
"What did you tell everyone?" she asked.
"That you quit," he said. "That you'd gotten a new job.
"You told them that?" she asked, searching his face to see if he was joking. "Why?"
"Because it's true," he said. "It's time that you devoted your life to me and Keegan, Lucy. I told you I was old-fashioned and I want to marry you, as soon as possible. So you have a man and a child to look after, a wedding to plan, a move to prepare for since you'll be living with me..."
He put a hand on her belly. "And who knows, maybe after the honeymoon we can tell Keegan that he has a little brother or sister on the way."
Lucy sat speechless. "Are you serious?"
"I'm not getting any younger, Lucy Primm," he said. "Being with you and Keegan has made me realize that for my love of old-fashioned values, there's a lot to be said for living in the present. And for looking forward to the future."
Lucy's tears began to fall again. But they were tears of happiness now.
"So what do you way, Miss Primm?" he asked. "Be my wife?"
It was all she could do to say 'yes,' through her tears. But she did.
