Katherine gave a small ecstatic shiver. His words appealed to all her deepest instincts, confirmed her in the belief that they were meant for one another. He had not attempted to soothe her doubts by fobbing her off with pretty compliments. He had spoken the truth from his heart. She recognised it and was deeply satisfied. If she could have seen the face that she turned to him, she would have known that he had spoken truth there, too. Glorified by love, it was, indeed, beautiful.

She said simply, “I don’t need more time to think. I need you every bit as much as you need me.” She managed a rather wavering little smile. “Ever since our first meeting in the Priory stable you have been coming to my rescue. It was you who helped me get over my fear of horses, you who picked me up and took me home when Ajax threw me, who came to my help in that business with the tinkers. When I was abducted, who saved me from social ruin? It’s plain to be seen that I can’t do without you. And since the only way in which I can rely upon having you always at hand, to come to my rescue, is to marry you, then the sooner we can achieve that desirable state, the happier I shall be.” She lifted one hand and gently touched his face, then held up her own to be kissed.
