“The epoxy accelerator won’t help now,” Quinn exclaimed. “They’re through!”
“Maybe we can stop it at the well head then,” dad said, as he cranked the steering wheel to the right. “Let’s go!” He turned the truck from our escape route toward the well. We were nearing the tall rig building when we saw the workers yelling and running away in a panic.
The rig building was empty when we arrived, with all the other workers having run away in fear. As we explored around the rig, we came upon a gruesome sight. There were the remains of a human skeleton laying near the well opening. It looked like it may have once belonged to a short, fat little man.
“The treaty!” I yelled, as I realized what must have happened. “Boswell was intentionally violating the treaty, and this is what happened to him!”
“I’m afraid we might find another one just like it near the epoxy container,” Quinn speculated.
Epilog
Several weeks had passed since the Terra Bite had pierced the Cogito cavern. The three of us had gone back to the clearing in the woods many times after that, in fact, nearly every day since. Our borrowed equipment had quit working a few hours after the mission was over, so we took it back to the hill by the oak tree to return it. There was no way for us to open the tree or access the aquavator, so we laid our treasures next to the hill. They were gone the next day.
Dad was a hero. He had reported the tanks of poisonous gas to the military, and they came immediately. They confiscated the entire drilling project, and moved everything away, after sealing the well bore. The Terra Bite machine was sealed at the bottom of the well.
We never found a trace of Glute. A three-hundred year old skeleton would blow away in the slightest breeze, I guessed.
It had been an eventful summer. We had experienced the most amazing adventure, but people would think we were crazy if we told anyone. Glute and his people were going to remain a family secret forever.
That Labor Day, we decided to go back to the clearing in the woods for one last time that summer, but this time the whole family went. Mom, Dad, Quinn, Logan, Saydee and Kasidee. And me, Trinity.
It was a sunny day, so we packed a picnic lunch, to enjoy in the clearing. After lunch, Quinn, Logan and I walked over toward the berry bushes, now bare, and out of season. We had made a little memorial near the bushes in memory of Glute. It was one of our old backpacks, with Glute’s name on the front. Only the blue stains were left inside to remind us of our friend.
“I wish Glute was here,” I said sadly. “I sure would like to visit his world again.”
Quinn looked a little teary-eyed, and so did Logan. “I can’t believe he’s gone,” Quinn insisted. “I think he’s still around. Boswell violated the treaty, not Glute.”
“So where has he been?” I wondered out loud. “What’s he been doing?”
“He’s probably a hero back in Cogito,” Logan said. “Doing TV interviews, talk shows, you know.”
“Not just in Cogito, my friends,” said a high-pitched, squeaky voice, “but in all the Isles!”
“Glute, show yourself!” I insisted, stomping my foot and starting to cry.
Glute appeared next to Logan, and we all jumped on him, nearly hugging him into unconsciousness. He was not dressed like he normally would be. He was still barefoot, but was wearing black pants, a white shirt, with a bright, multi-colored vest and a red, round-brimmed bowler hat.
“Glute, you’re alive, you’re alive!” I said, wiping away my sudden tears. “Where have you been?”
“As a new council member, I have been very busy,” he said with a proud smile, while taking a bow as he announced his promotion. “Now please introduce me to the rest of your family. We have not been properly introduced. It is a serious lapse of protocol, my good friends.”
I stood by and watched as Quinn and Logan introduced Glute to the rest of my family. It was such a strange sight to see dad bend way over for a proper introduction.
A minute later, Glute was holding Kasidee, while Saydee, having snatched the hat off Glute, was running in circles around them, wearing it on her head. I’m sure there was some serious breach of protocol going on, but everyone was happy, especially me. My very special friend had returned!
Mom and Dad were right about one thing, that’s for sure.
Life IS full of surprises!

Introduction
My seven year-old sister, Jordyn, can be a real pain in my butt sometimes. But we are still best friends, her and me. Jordyn and Madyson. Jordy and Maddy for short. We do everything together.
We used to spend all summer long solving mysteries and fighting crime in our backyard, at our house on Marigold Street. That’s where we live with our Mom and Dad and our little sister Payton. But NOW we solve mysteries and fight crime for real. And I’m only eleven!
Did I mention that my Grandpa is a superhero?
That’s right. A real, live superhero! I just found out! Well, what I really mean is, he used to be one. He’s retired now.
Jordy and I are spending the summer days at my Grandpa and Gram’s house. It’s on Marigold Street too, just a little farther down from our house. We stay there while our Mom and Dad are at work. Payton is staying at the Happy Apple Day Care Center.
My littlest sister isn’t even one year old yet, but she is “too much” for Gram.
You know, if she is “too much” now, she will be “way too much” when she gets bigger, don’t you think?
But you probably want to hear about me, right?
Chapter One- Grandpa’s Secret
Early one sun-shiny morning, Jordy and I were riding our bikes to Grandpa’s house.
Jordy had a worried look on her face.
“Don’t you think Natalie Rose would be more comfortable in your backpack, Maddy?”
I looked down at Natalie Rose. I had rubber-banded my favorite doll to my handlebars. She was wearing her favorite spring outfit and she seemed to be having a fine time.
“No,” I answered. “She can’t see from back there, and she likes to feel the wind on her face, anyway.”
I did kinda see her point about being comfortable, though. I had to use three rubber bands around her neck to keep her from slipping down and getting her feet in the spokes! Lucky for her, it’s a short trip to Grandpa and Gram’s house.
We turned our bikes into the brick driveway with the pretty yellow flowers along the edges. Gram always had a surprise for us. Our Gram is not like most people’s Grams. She is young and pretty, like our Mom. She has blonde hair, blue eyes and a really happy smile.
Unfortunately for Natalie Rose that morning, I wanted to beat Jordy inside more than I wanted to untie my doll. She would have to wait.
Jordy and I both jumped off running, and our bikes wobbled off in two different directions before crashing to the ground. We were in a race to the kitchen!
“Whoa! Slow down you two! What’s the hurry?” Gram asked as we zoomed past her. I beat Jordy to the kitchen table by two steps and a long slide across Gram’s newly waxed floor.
Today’s surprise was cookies.
“Cookies! Chocolate chip! May we have one, please?” We both asked politely. I was a little bit out of breath from winning the race.
“Of course you can. And would you please take one out to Grandpa, too? He’s working in the back workshop. I have some shopping to do today, so you will be spending your day with Grandpa.”
We couldn’t decide who was going to carry Grandpa’s cookie plate, so we each marched out with a plate and a cookie.
Grandpa was sitting at one of his workbenches, and he had Gram’s toaster all torn apart.
My Grandpa is really big and really old. Not fat big, just big b
ig. And between you and me, I think he’s way over forty. His shoulders are double thick, but his hair is double thin.
“Hey, Maddy! Hey, Jordy,” Grandpa said. He was happy to see us. “What are you two up to today?”
“Oh, about four and a half feet,” I said with a big smile.
I learned that one from Grandpa. He is always saying something funny and weird like that. Jordy was getting first hugs.
“You sure are funny today, Madyson Green,” Grandpa said.
Did I tell you my last name is Green? Oh, well. It’s Green. Madyson and Jordyn Green. Like the color. I mean our last name is like the color. We are not like the color. We are not green at all. I have bouncy, brown curly hair, and Jordy has not-as-bouncy blonde hair.
My Grandpa has a sweet workshop, but what’s underneath the workshop is way beyond sweet. It’s awesome! I promised not to tell anyone our secret, so if I tell you, you can’t tell anyone either, Okay?
“Girls, I have some very important work I must do today,” Grandpa said, “and you can help me if you want to.”
“Yay!” We both said together, jumping up and down at the same time. Helping Grandpa is always fun.
Grandpa put the toaster he was working on in the trash can. It looked like Gram was getting a new toaster!
We followed him over to a corner in his workshop.
“You have to promise to keep a secret. Can you do that?” Grandpa asked. We were both already nodding our heads up and down in agreement.
In a corner of the workshop was a closet. At least I thought it was a closet. It turned out to be a secret elevator! We all got in, and it took us down to the basement. I didn’t even know there was a basement!
We followed Grandpa out of the elevator to a giant metal door. He put his hand on a special spot on the wall. The spot started glowing blue, and the giant metal door swung open.
My Grandpa had a secret laboratory!
“Wow!” was all that Jordy could say, over and over. “Wow!” She stepped in and looked around while she was holding one of my Grandpa’s big hands.
I followed them inside, and the door automatically closed behind us. His laboratory was even bigger than his workshop! There were all kinds of computers and gadgets and blinking lights in the room.
“This is sooooo sweet! Is that a gigantic computer screen? What’s that big silver thingy over there?” I was full of questions, and they were all coming out of me at the same time.
“This is a secret place that has to stay a secret, okay girls? You can’t tell anybody about it,” Grandpa warned, “or bad people may come and try to steal everything that’s down here.”
“So are you secretly rich or some kind of mad scientist or something, Grandpa?” Jordy was looking up at Grandpa and wondering out loud.
He chuckled. “No, nothing like that. I used to work for the government, back when I was younger. Now I only work when I get a special call, and I got a special call this morning.”
“Who was it, Grandpa?” I asked. “Was it the President of the United States?”
“No, it wasn’t the President, but it was somebody who works for the President.”
“Have you ever met the President, Grandpa?” Jordy asked.
“No, I have not met this President, kiddo, but I have met other Presidents who came before him. I retired a few years ago, remember?”
I didn’t know I was related to someone who had ever met a President. “So who called today, Grandpa?” I asked.
“It was my old boss. His name is Ray. He wants me to go to Washington and take care of a problem he is having. I thought you two might want to come along.”
“Heck yeah!” I said. “But how are we going to get there?”
A tiny smile broke out on my Grandpa’s face. He bent down so he could talk to us real close. “We will fly, of course. We will all fly.”

Introduction-
Every once in a while, I wish I was normal. You know, like everyone else. But I’m not like everyone else.
My seven-year-old sister Jordyn and I have very exciting adventures. Sometimes, a little too exciting! We fight crime, and solve mysteries! You might think that is a bizarre way to grow up, and you would be right. It is.
What makes it fun is the fact that our Grandpa is a superhero!
Yep, that’s right. A real, live, x-ray vision, super speedy, high-flying, bullet-deflecting superhero!
At least he used to be.
He’s retired now.
But every once in a while, FBI Director Ray Blackburn will call my Grandpa in for a special case- something the FBI can’t do themselves. When that happens, my Grandpa goes to his secret workshop and jumps into his supercharger for a couple of minutes, to supercharge his powers again.
And you know what? His supercharger works for us, too! Really! It gives us superpowers! But they only last for a little while, about a day. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. Have you ever heard of anything so bizarre?
I like that word. Bizarre, bizarre, bizarre. I have a bizarre name, too. Well, maybe not bizarre, but it is spelled differently. You would never guess it if I didn’t tell you what it is. So I’ll tell you. It’s Madyson. Madyson Green. But everybody calls me Maddy.
I like it, but I can tell you it is impossible to find Madyson on a souvenir cup at a gift store! At least I have not seen one in the last eleven years. That’s how old I am. Eleven. We have trouble finding souvenir cups for Jordyn, too. Or Jordy. That’s what everyone calls Jordyn for short. Jordy. But a personalized souvenir cup is the last thing on my mind today. Today, I’m going to tell you about one of our biggest cases, in fact, it is our biggest case ever!
It’s about when Grandpa got kidnapped!
Chapter One- Grandpa’s Gone!
Last Friday started out like any other Friday, only worse. It should have been better, because it was a no-school Friday, but it felt worse to me. My sister Jordy and I were pedaling our bikes over to our Grandpa and Gram’s house. They live on Marigold Street, a little ways farther down than us. Jordy and I live with our Mom and Dad and little sister, Payton. When our parents are working, Jordy and I stay with Grandpa and Gram. Payton stays at the Happy Apple Day Care Center.
Gram usually has a surprise waiting for us when we get to her house. Our Gram is not like most people’s Grams. Our Gram has to be the youngest Gram ever! She is kinda thin, with blonde hair, blue eyes and a really happy smile.
My Grandpa is really big and really old. Not fat big, just big big. And between you and me, I think he’s way over forty. His shoulders are double thick, but his hair is double thin.
“I wonder what Gram is baking this morning?” asked Jordy, as we pedaled along the sidewalk on Marigold Street. “I hope it’s chocolate chip cookies!”
I didn’t say anything. I was in a BAD MOOD. I had spent the entire morning searching for Natalie Rose. Natalie Rose is my favorite doll. She wasn’t anywhere. I think somebody took her! So I was not in the mood for cookies or anything else that sounded cheerful that morning.
We were getting close to Grandpa’s when Quinn rode up beside us. Quinn Green. He is our cousin. Quinn is my Dad’s brother’s son, so from what I’m told, that makes him my cousin. Quinn and I are both in the 5th grade, at the same school, Cooper Hills Elementary. Our
school is the oldest elementary school in our town. We even have the same teacher, Mrs. Cooper. And please don’t ask her if the school was named after her, either. The answer is NO, IT’S NOT! My cousin Quinn asked her once. I think she gets asked that a lot. Quinn lives up the hill on Terrace Street with his Mom, his Dad, and his four younger brothers and sisters.
“Hey Maddy,” Quinn yelled as he got closer. “I’m going to Grandpa and Gram’s too!”
“Big deal, banana peel,” I said under my breath, so Quinn couldn’t hear. I was in a bad mood, but I didn’t want to be rude.
Quinn is the smartest kid I know. He is tall and thin, and he wears glasses that look like Harry Potter’s. He is only eleven, but I bet he can take a computer apart and put it back together in the dark, one handed, and even without the instructions. Maybe.
