Super Kids! The Forgotten World Page 6

by Kurt Zimmerman

“Are you two spending the day at Grandpa and Gram’s, too?” Quinn asked.

“Yeah,” said Jordy, “and we’ll beat you there!”

Jordy took off like a rocket, followed closely by Quinn.

I might have been in a bad mood, but there was no way I was going to let those two beat me into Gram’s kitchen! I pedaled twice as fast, and caught up to them right as they were turning into Grandpa and Gram’s driveway, even with the extra weight of my backpack! We shot up the brick driveway with the yellow flowers on the edges and ran the rest of the way into the house. All three of us burst through the door at the same time. It was a tie!

“Wow!” Said Gram, as she stepped back behind the kitchen counter to keep from getting run over. “That was some entrance! You three better get a drink of water and catch your breath before you do anything else!”

We all grabbed a glass out of the cupboard and lined up at the refrigerator door water dispenser.

Gram had just come back from running errands, so there were no warm cookies! At this rate, my mood didn’t have any chance of getting better.

“Let’s go see Grandpa!” Quinn suggested. “Is he out in his workshop, Gram?”

“I haven’t seen him since I got back,” Gram said, “so he is probably in the workshop tinkering with something.”

Quinn, Jordy and I ran out to the workshop to see Grandpa. We didn’t see him when we looked in. I looked at Jordy. I didn’t know if Quinn knew about Grandpa’s secret laboratory, so I wasn’t sure if we should look for him in the basement.

“Maybe he’s downstairs,” Quinn suggested. He walked over to the closet in the corner that hid the secret elevator to downstairs laboratory.

  I guess he already knew.

“You know about the secret laboratory?” I asked Quinn. “When did you find out?”

“Grandpa told me about a week ago,” Quinn replied, “and he showed me how to fly his plane, too. But he told me that I couldn’t tell anyone about it.”

“Did he let you use the supercharger?” I asked.

  “What’s a supercharger?” Quinn replied.

Well that answers that question, I thought. “I’ll tell you later,” I said.

When we got over to the closet, the padlock on the door was undone.

“He must be down there,” said Jordy. We all got into the elevator and went down.

The big steel door that leads to the laboratory was already open.

“That’s weird,” I said. “That door closes automatically after you go through it. Why is it hanging open?”

All of us went in and looked around.

The room was filled with large computer screens and other high-tech equipment that I didn’t understand. We looked around and underneath all the work stations, and behind all of the equipment.

“Grandpa!” Jordy yelled. “Grandpa! Where are you?”

He didn’t answer, so we went back up to the house.

Gram was putting away groceries and cleaning up our water glasses.

“Grandpa’s not in his workshop or the lab,” I told Gram. “Is he in the house?”

“He’s not in the house, kids,” she said. “Let’s go take another look in the workshop.”

Gram led the way as we marched back outside. We looked everywhere. He was gone!

“Maybe he’s down at one of the neighbors,” Gram suggested. “He can’t be too far away, his little plane is still parked out behind the workshop, under the big, green tarp.”

We turned back toward the workshop.

“Oh, no!” said Gram. Jordy, Quinn and I stopped dead in our tracks behind her.

She was looking down, holding her hand over her mouth and backing away from something on the floor.

“What is it, Gram?” I asked. She looked very scared. I looked at the spot on the floor that she was backing away from. There was a little bit of brown powder, but nothing else.

“Grandpa might be in big trouble, kids. I need to call Director Ray right now.” Gram turned away and ran into the house.

“What do you think it is, Maddy?” Asked Quinn, pointing at the brown powder on the floor.

“I don’t know,” I replied, “but it sure worried Gram.” I knelt down, wet my finger and lightly touched the powder. I held it up to my nose to smell.

“It smells like cinnamon,” I said. I touched it to my tongue. “And it tastes like cinnamon. My guess is that it’s cinnamon.”

“Why would Gram be afraid of cinnamon?” Jordy asked.

We ran into the house, just in time to hear Gram on the phone with FBI Director Ray.

“Yes, that’s right, Ray, cinnamon. He’s been kidnapped!”

  Introduction-

  Faster-

  Must pedal faster!

Casey’s heart felt like it was going to pound right out of his chest!

  Harder-

  Must pedal harder!

Sweat was streaming from under his baseball cap, mixing with his tears and stinging his eyes. His bike was going as fast as he could make it go, jerking from side to side as his feet pumped furiously at the pedals. His leg muscles burned under the pressure, his arms and shoulders were aching from the strain.

Casey was chasing his backpack and the thieves who had just stolen it from him!

He kept pushing himself to go farther, faster. He remembered his training and used it to pedal faster than any other twelve year old had before. He didn’t care if anyone saw him crying, he didn’t even care about his stupid backpack. Casey’s friend was in it and he was being kidnapped!

Hold on a second. I should explain.

You are probably wondering how Casey’s friend could fit inside his backpack.

  Actually, he’s kinda small.

  He’s only three inches tall.

  His name is Zee.

  He’s not from Earth.

And he’s about to save Casey’s life.

Totally confused? Let’s go back a couple of weeks and start from the beginning...

Chapter One- The Beginning- First Contact

Have you ever had the feeling that someone or something was in the room with you? And you just had to turn and look in that direction?

That very thing happened one June night in Michigan. Casey’s eyes popped open about midnight. The room was lit only by the moonlight streaming in through his open bedroom window. The chirping and clicking of crickets and June bugs drowned out any other sound. Casey couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary, so he swung his feet over the side of the bed and listened. Less than a week before summer vacation begins, was all Casey could think about. But why the creepy feeling? It felt like a strange presence was in his bedroom with him. Then he heard it.

  “Helloooo, Casey!”

He tumbled out of bed onto the floor. Something was calling his name! At first he thought Joshua was playing a trick on him, but his younger brother wasn’t there. No one was in sight.

“Hello, Casey!” The mysterious voice repeated. It was coming from the shelf that held his rock collection!

Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, Casey crawled over toward the shelf. There was a soft, blue light glowing under one of his rocks. Could this be where the voice was coming from? He placed his hand on top of the rock, and felt it shivering.

Casey’s hand automatically jerked back, as if the rock had given him an electric shock! Is this really happening? He pl
aced his hand on the rock again. There was definitely some kind of vibration.

Picking it up, Casey held the rock against his ear, as if it were a strange kind of prehistoric cell phone. After clearing his throat, Casey replied, “Uhh, Hello?” He shot a quick glance around the room to make sure no one saw him talking to a rock.

I wonder what Chad would think about this? It wouldn’t take long for his best friend to spread this story around the seventh grade, Casey thought. Casey Donnelly, rock collector, was on a first-name basis with a piece of his collection!

Casey’s thoughts were interrupted by the talking rock. “Do not be afraid. I am a person like you.”

“A person like me? I don’t think so,” he replied. “I’m tall and thin like my dad, and you’re a rock.”

“I am not a rock. I am a person, inside my protective capsule,” the rock said.

Casey searched his memory, but at that moment, nothing came to mind that could out-weird a talking rock. “You look like a rock to me, and if you start acting weird, I’ll throw you out of my second floor window.”

“That will not be necessary,” the rock said. “I am a traveler, but I am a person like you. I have arms and legs and a body like yours, only smaller.”

“How about coming out of that rock and letting me take a look?” Casey asked. “I would feel much better if we were talking face-to-face.”

“I am sorry, but your atmosphere would hurt me. What looks like a ‘rock’ to you is actually my protection. But we can still talk about anything. Judging by that look on your face, I can tell you have questions.”

Well, duh, Casey thought. He had LOTS of questions. Like how could this ‘traveler’ see him? How could he hear him? And the question Casey really wanted to ask was, “Who the heck are you, and where did you come from?”

The traveler inside the rock said his real name was quite unpronounceable, but Earth people called him ‘Zee’.

“So your rock is really some kind of space ship, right?” Casey asked.

“Yes, I suppose you could call it that. I am not from around here, as you would say.”

The more they talked, the more questions Casey had.

“What kind of food do you eat?”

”What kind of rock can fly through the universe?”

“Why did you come to Earth?”

“All in good time,” Zee said. “You are in need of sleep, and we can talk again tomorrow.”

The next morning’s sunlight found Casey sleeping on his bedroom floor, with his head next to the mysterious rock. He was achy from sleeping on the hard surface, and it took a couple of minutes for Casey to realize where he was. Sometime during the night, he had rolled onto his left arm, and it hung loosely at his side, still fast asleep. Wow, that must have been some dream I had, Casey thought. But just to make sure...
