Chapter 1
Prologue
On a landscape far away from the mortal world, a man with a short beard opened his green eyes, shooting a red light toward the jade-coated roof of his secluded cave. The rocky bed he’d slept upon was crushed under the immense pressure his body released, but the man didn’t fall. Instead, he floated in a relaxed position with his arms crossed behind his head, a few feet above the rocky ground that spread through the whole cave.
The red light bounced off the jade ceiling and shot back at him like a dagger.
The man unfolded his arms and tilted his head to avoid the red beam. The beam passed an inch away from his pierced earlobe, heating up the previously cold cave. It struck the rocky floor, creating a deep crevice that healed as soon as it appeared.
Before the man could sit up, the stone bed repaired itself as if it had never suffered a calamity. The man rested his back on the cold, stony surface, munching on the green weed that had grown at the end of the cave. It tasted like shit, but it was the only thing he could chew on and feel some taste, so he rationed it, chewing one stalk every other day.
For the last two hundred years he had eaten nothing else; this mutated grass was his only option.
But there was still hope. The Primordial Blood Palace had absorbed blood for the first time in the last two hundred years, and that meant there was hope. Maybe it was him, the trash of the family.
If it was him, he had already reached the Houtian Realm. When the man had sent one of his clones to check on the trash, he hadn’t thought it would bear fruit so quickly. It had been only a few years, and the trash had reached the Houtian Realm. Not bad.
But if it wasn’t him, then who had obtained the artifact? It was a family heirloom. No one but a blood relative should be able to use it.
In the end, he didn’t care who had gotten their hands on the heirloom. It had been activated, and soon it would suck enough blood to provide him a channel to divine his location and offer it to one of the lords that served under him.
Then he would finally escape this damn prison. Maybe it would take ten years, or one hundred years. But all he had was time and patience.
There was always hope for those who waited for the right opportunity.
Chapter 2
Tang Sia arrives
A heavy wind blew across an isolated room, threatening to blow off its shabby roof. A huge tree nearby danced to the tune of the wind, but it failed to damage the roof because the roof bore many fist-sized holes that filtered and reduced the speed of wind when it passed across the roof.
Lost in his thoughts, a youth with deprived cheeks lay inside the room, listening to the melody of the wind and staring at the dim sun through the roof holes. The wind reminded him of the courtyard he used to live in, in Firmament Sect, in his previous life. A cliff ran below the window of his sleeping chamber, and howling winds constantly crashed against that cliff. He used to like listening to them. They provided him tranquility. Reclining on a long wooden chair, he used to drink his usual sweet tea and stare at the wind sweeping over the dark valley while he pondered the secrets of arrays.
Shaking his head, he got up and stretched his arms and legs, then tore off the itchy white bandages wrapped around his whole body. It had been five days since he woke up after the life-threatening fight with Du Su, five days of recuperation and waiting for this moment. To regain his vitality and get rid of these shabby bandages. Fei’e
r had done the worst job of bandaging him up. She was about to join the Divine Fragrance Palace, which had a special division for physical healing. She would lose face if someone saw her skills in bandaging a person.
After throwing the stinky bandages out, he cleaned himself, washed his long black hair, and changed into a nice silky sky blue martial robe sewed by Fei’er. It smelled so good and fit nicely around his muscular body. Apparently, after reaching layer two of the body Foundation Realm, his height had increased by two inches. He was now six feet tall and thinner than before, especially his face which looked like he’d fasted for a year.
Damn. After cursing endlessly over the lack of fat on his body, he sent his divine sense inward and checked on his physical condition. Good heavens, at least his blood pearls had almost recovered to peak condition. There were exactly 1,010. After consuming over one hundred blood pearls while fighting Du Su and the Icy Hell Disk spirit artifact, he’d been injured badly. When he woke up, he found his blood pearls drained to nothing. It seemed his body had used those blood pearls to heal his injuries, because there was no way he could heal that fast without using blood pearls.
But his injuries had put him at a deficit. His body was in no position to cultivate, so he’d had to rely on passive essence gathering to generate a few blood pearls, heal himself further, and then repeat the same process again. This way, he had nearly healed to his prime condition in the last five days, and even replenished his blood pearls.
It wasn’t just from his efforts, though. The ox blood soup his grandfather had the kitchen prepare had also helped him. For body cultivators, one’s surroundings weren’t the only source of essence energy. In fact, essence was present everywhere. Animals, plants, and so on. Every living thing in the world needed essence energy and stored it in their bodies. Of course, he couldn’t absorb it as pure essence energy from his surroundings, but he still benefited from eating meat and drinking nourishing soup.
Damn, that soup had tasted awesome with hearty chunks of meat floating in it. With a grumbling sound, his stomach responded to his thoughts. Maybe he should drink it four or five times a day.
In fact, Fei’er had told him that she’d fed him soup thrice a day for five days while he was unconscious, and it seemed that had helped in his recovery too. Now that he had recovered, he could cultivate Five Elemental Way Qi Cultivation Art once more. Because he had to double boost his energy, his qi cultivation had regressed back to layer zero of the qi Refinement Realm.
Anyway.
A young girl walked in, wearing a dark blue robe that matched the color of her eyes. “Young master, you’ve recovered already. It’s heaven’s blessing. Do you like the robe I stitched for you? Look, I’m wearing a gown made from the same cloth.” She chirped like a bird while touching her shoulders with her small fingers.
“Fei’er. As long as I’ve blood in my body, I’ll survive.”
“I’ve bought a lot of material so I can prepare many robes for you. You don’t have to worry about robes anymore.”
Wei felt a headache coming his way. This lass had tortured him with gray robes she’d found inside a storage ring, and now she was planning to do the same with blue ones.
What the heck was wrong with her?
“Young master, aren’t you happy? I replaced all the gray clothes you hated. I’ve filled the storage ring with blue clothes. For years, you won’t lack any clothes.”
Wei sweated profusely. “Fei’er. Give me the remaining Essence Gathering Pill, and then the storage ring too.” He had to cultivate to layer one of the qi Refinement Realm so he could access the storage ring.
“Young master, if you take the ring, how will I carry one-thousand-foot-long garment cloth with me? I’d have to accompany you day and night so I can make new robes whenever I want.” She clapped like a little girl.
Wei’s sweating increased. “Fei’er. First, tell me why you declined Tang Sia’s invitation.” When he woke up five days ago, Grandfather Shua had told him that Fei’er had rejected an invitation from Tang Sia to go back with her. That was a golden opportunity for her to get into the sect without jumping any hurdles.
“I can’t leave you behind. I’ll keep attending you.” She had a resolute look. “Young master, do you know your father has been missing since the fight? He was placed in the dungeon, but he is now missing.”
Wei frowned, but he had no opinion about this. “Fei’er, listen to me. The Divine Fragrance Palace is the best sect for you. If you join it, I can be worry free.”
She shook her head and pursed her lips tightly.
He sighed dejectedly. “If you go there, I promise I’ll join the sect soon.”
A graceful woman in a blood red robe entered his room and glared at him. “Ki Fei, is this hooligan the reason why you keep refusing my invitation? Did I not tell you relationships aren’t worth it?” Tang Sia had curves to be proud of, but her gaze matched that of a Ferocious Beast eyeing its prey. Disdain lingered in her peach-shaped eyes, and her small mouth was curled in a displeased expression. “I can kill him in one strike.” A purple glow appeared behind her head, and her aura raised to the limit.
Chapter 3
Challenge
Li Wei’s body tensed when a purple line appeared between Tang Sia’s eyebrows. A faint purple light also appeared behind her head, leaking her manifestation energy. It showed she had broken through the Marrow Cleansing Realm recently, and she couldn’t control her powers neatly. She exuded an intense aura of killing, and it filled Wei’s shabby room in an instant. He could smell the calamity rushing at him, but he couldn’t take his eyes off her. Her face had a one-in-a-million charm that could capture a man’s heart, but this moment she looked like a drawn-out saber.
Graceful and merciless at the same time.
Wei’s gaze danced around the room, searching for his array-carved sword.
Damn, where did little lass put it? Although he couldn’t pour any qi inside it, he could at least wield it with physical strength. Even holding the cold metal hilt in his hand would give him moral support. In fact, if he’d had cultivation at layer nine of the body Foundation Realm and a strand of qi in his dantian, he had a twenty percent chance to injure Tang Sia.
For a moment, killing intent flashed in Tang Sia’s eyes, but it vanished as soon as it appeared. A gentle breeze replaced her ferocious deposition. Although her expression remained furious, and the purple glow still emitted around her head, her killing intent faded.
“Senior, why are you in my room?” Wei asked calmly. He knew Tang Sia didn’t have the heart to kill an innocent person. At his question, she blinked and her deposition eased. He even heard her heartbeat becoming steady and calm.
Wei’s shoulders relaxed, but he didn’t put his guard down yet. If they really fought, he had a good chance of escaping. He hadn’t had even a ten percent chance when he’d fought Du Su because Du Su had a spirit artifact and Wei’s body cultivation was still in the Refinement Realm, but if he had to fight with Tang Sia, he had some chance to escape with his life.
“Little girl, is he stopping you from coming with me?” Tang Sia gazed at Fei’er, and her face turned calm and gentle.
Wei sighed inwardly. He hadn’t heard bad things about Tang Sia in his previous life. All he knew that she lacked ruthlessness, and that hurt the Divine Fragrance Palace—and she had to suffer because of it.
Anyway, that was for the future. He had nothing to do with her. So, even if she died tomorrow, he didn’t have to worry. He just had to use her to push Fei’er into the sect, and then life would take Fei’er with her.
She raised her voice. “Little girl, are you planning to answer, or shall I kill him?”
“Elder sister.” Fei’er steeled her face. “I can’t stop you from hurting young master Wei. But if you dare to kill him, then I’ll die with him too.” She moved between them, spreading her arms out and staring at Tang Sia furiously. Her body quivered, but she gritted her teeth and kept her eyes open.
“What if I kill hi
m and take you by force?”
“Then . . .” Fei’er’s face turned grim and pearl-like teardrops emerged in her eyes. “I won’t let you do that. I’ll fight you to the death.” With a flick, a sword appeared in her hand, but it was heavy and fell with a loud bang as soon as she tried to raise it up.
Warmth entered Wei’s heart to see the little lass caring for him. It made him more resolute to push her into the Divine Fragrance Palace. It would be the wisest choice for her. This way, he didn’t have to worry about her anymore.
“A storage ring.” Tang Sia arched her brows. “Little girl, where did you get a storage ring?”
Fei’er pulled the storage ring from her finger and handed it to Wei. “Young master gave it to me. It belongs to him.”
Tang Sia stared at Wei, but her eyes showed no greed. “Junior, where did you get this ring? You can’t cultivate, so what do you want that ring for? How about if I buy it from you?”
“I’m sorry, but it’s not for sale.” Wei wanted to smack the little lass for showing off his wealth, and he cursed himself for not crafting a concealing array on the base of the ring to hide its glow.
“Junior, don’t reject my offer before you hear it. If you sell me the ring, I’ll give you five low quality Qi Stones, and I’ll let you join the sect in some form and find a cultivation method that suits you. Qi initiation is not an issue when you have tons of pills to help you.”
Wei’s eyes shone with greed. Pills were his weak point in his previous life, and that’s why he wanted to become an alchemist in this life. Even after becoming an Array Master, he’d remained a poor bastard. Those who concocted pills were revered through the whole Martial Realm, and they enjoyed riches, higher cultivation, and whatnot.
Those bastards. He wanted to be the same bastard as them. That was his path of Dao. Lazy immortal Dao.
“With your current powers, you can’t protect that ring,” she said in a gloomy voice. “It will only attract calamities. Even for me, it will be troublesome.”
Wei shook head in his mind. The offer was worth considering, but the storage ring held utter importance for him. There were too many things he would collect in the coming days with his future knowledge, and he didn’t want to carry them all. Imagine, him carrying a thirty-foot-tall medicinal cauldron above his head from the Broken Hill of White Feather Valley. Wouldn’t that attract too much attention?
