It wasn’t until the district attorney had shown up at Kian’s house that I really felt that itch to run, though. Running had always been an escape, and for the past couple of weeks, I’d needed it more than ever.
Just thinking of the pre-trial hearings was enough to make me want to run, keep on running until maybe I found a nice, dark hole where I could hide and never ever come out.
This pre-trial thing had me nervous.
Things could get ugly.
I didn’t know if others from the clan might try to contact me and Suria and dissuade us from talking or not. So far, it hadn’t happened, but if they worried about things Gabriel might say during the trial, they just might focus on us as well as him.
Would the DA try to convince Gabriel to roll over on anybody in the clan in exchange for a deal?
That was another worry that plagued me.
It seemed the LA district attorney was in it to get as many convictions as he could. He’d already strong-armed Suria into testifying even though she’d come into this with eyes wide open. Kian had gone so far as to hire an attorney for her just to make sure she was covered because the DA kept insisting she had to testify in order to protect herself.
She was getting immunity in exchange for her testimony, and even if Gabriel agreed to a plea bargain, she was safe and so was my mom – the attorney Kian hired had seen to that.
Man, this was just too much shit to be worrying about.
I rounded the block and started on my path back to Kian’s, knowing I couldn’t stay out here running forever. I’d spent the past week trying to outrun my problems, and so far, it hadn’t happened.
I needed to shower and get ready for work.
I was coming up on the next cross street I needed to take when I heard the bike. I didn’t think much of it, other than the fact that it was loud.
Then, all of a sudden, the noise from the bike got a lot louder, too loud, like a monster growling in my ear.
Movement from my peripheral vision had me darting to the side, although in retrospect, he hadn’t come all that close.
I gaped as the man on the bike came to a stop right in front of me on the sidewalk.
He turned his head and stared at me.
“Lane!”
