Irish War (Anarchy Book 16)

Page 27

by Hosker, Griff

Mac Murchada and Richard de Clare raised a large army, which included Welsh archers and arranged for Raymond FitzGerald (also known as Raymond le Gros) to lead it. The force took the Ostman towns of Wexford, Waterford, and Dublin in rapid succession.

The events around the invasion of Ireland all happened. However, I have shortened the time to make a more exciting story and brought it forward by a year or two to allow the Warlord to participate. The Pope was English and he did order a papal bull. The Irish clung on to slavery for longer than anywhere else in Western Europe. Of course, its replacement was little better. Serfdom still tied men and their families to lords where they worked for a pittance but they had rights; a slave had none.

The Vikings ruled Man (Mann) and the westerns islands until the thirteenth century. The Vikings in Ireland were only defeated when the Normans arrived. They ruled five towns, Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Wexford and Waterford. They still raided but they traded more. At the time of the Normans they were past their best. It should be remembered that the Normans were descended from the Vikings who settled along the lower Seine.

The incident with the cattle actually happened. It was Raymond Le Gros. He found himself facing a thousand Irishmen and he had ten knights and ninety others. Nearby was a huge herd of cattle. They drove the cattle through the Irishmen and defeated them.

I have used the Warlord to be the instrument which delivered King Henry’s judgement to de Clare. In reality it was Hervey de Montmorency. King Henry gained the island of Ireland with just a handful of knights.

The Warlord and William will return. Their story and that of King Henry II will continue.

For those who like authentic maps the last two maps are part of a series now available. They are the first Government produced maps of the British Isles. Great Britain, apart from the larger conurbations, was the same as it had been 800 years earlier.

I also discovered a good website http://orbis.stanford.edu/ . This allows a reader to plot any two places in the Roman world and if you input the mode of transport you wish to use and the time of year it will calculate how long it would take you to travel the route. I have used it for all of my books up to the eighteenth century as the transportation system was roughly the same. The Romans would have been quicker!
