  Pregnant.

When I didn’t think things could get any worse, they do.

“It’s been two lines for a whole six minutes. What does that mean?” He picks up my test, looking at it closer.

I start to cry. “It means I’m pregnant!”

He grabs me, lifting me off the ground and twirling me around in the bathroom. When he puts me down, he kisses me on the lips, but I make sure not to respond to his kiss.

“We’re having a baby. I can’t believe it,” he expresses. He’s so happy that if you didn’t really know him, he looks like a normal guy excited about finding out that he is going to be a father. “This has changed everything. You have given me something I have always wanted.”

I let what I was thinking in my head slip out of my mouth without me even thinking about it. “I don’t want to have a baby with you.”

His warm breath blows in my face as he tugs on my hair, “You have nine months to get over it, because whether you like it or not, we are having this child together.”

“You can’t make me have a baby with you if I don’t want to, Aiden.” I’m not going to do this to my child. I won’t bring him or her into this world just to suffer along with me because of him. “I’ll die before bringing this child into the world.”

“You wouldn’t kill yourself, Edith, you’re not that stupid,” he says confidently.

“I’m not staying here with you, Aiden. I will find a way to get away from you, to protect my child,” I threaten, standing up to him. I know it isn’t very smart for me to argue back with him after what he has just done to me. But once I saw those two lines on that stick, all thinking went right out the window. I didn’t think I would really end up being pregnant, but now I am, and with a man that I don’t love or want to be with anymore.

The baby isn’t even here yet, and I want to protect it.

He stands there, smiling at me, not fazed by my little threat to leave him. He grabs me by the back of my neck, pulling me closer to him. “You need to know something. If you leave me, you will be putting Grace, your mother, and Nancy’s lives in jeopardy, and you don’t want to do that, do you?”

I freeze up hearing him say their names, and panic, I shake my head, pleading with him not to hurt them.

“You see, you still don’t get it. I’m not going to let you go. I will do anything in my power to keep you, even if that means I have to kill those you love.” I begin to shake as he bends down on his knees and puts his cheek on my stomach. He rubs his face a few times across my stomach, then whispers something to the baby. When he’s done, he places a hand on my stomach and looks up at me. “You are never going to leave me, Edith, and if you do, know that I will hunt you down to the end of the world, and while I am hunting you down. I will hurt those close to you until you return.” His voice changes, sounding like a predator ready to hunt and kill to get the thing that he wants. “Don’t play with me, Edith. This will be one battle you will lose.”

The office door opens, and Aiden gets up and leaves me in the bathroom. Once I know that he’s gone, I fall to the floor, crying uncontrollably. I put my arms around my stomach and cry for my child and me. There’s no way out for us; we are stuck here forever. If I try and run to save us both, then those I care for will be put in harm’s way, and I won’t be able to handle that kind of pain—knowing that I am the reason that they aren’t alive anymore.

Crying harder, I come to terms with the fact that this is my fate. I will have to stay with Aiden for the sake of those I love. I won’t be selfish and put their lives on the line for my child and me.

I get up from off the ground and dry my tears. There’s no reason for me to cry anymore; I will have to make the best of my situation. Grabbing the test, I look at it for a few seconds and rub my stomach, telling my child ‘sorry’ ahead of time. For Mommy couldn’t free us from this life. Throwing the test away, I start for the door and pause when I hear Aiden speaking to someone. That voice sounds familiar. I open the door and step out.

The person that Aiden’s speaking with has his back turned, so I can’t see his face. Aiden looks over at me, giving me a teasing smile as he sticks his hand out for me to come to him. I do as he says and walk to him.

“I want you to meet someone. Remember that painting you saw in the hallway, of my brother?” He puts his arms around me and turns me to face the person he’s been talking to. “Well, here he is—Ignacio,” he says, laughing in my ear.

I haven’t seen this face since high school. It’s the face of my first true love, the one I planned my whole life with before he left me. When he left it put a hole in my heart, I could barely bear the pain. I had to cut him out of all my memories and everything I ever loved. I not only lost him that night, but I lost my father too. They were the only two men who meant the world to me.

He’s the sole reason I didn’t date, because I had already given my whole heart away. I waited two years for him to return to me, and eventually had to give up, because it finally dawned on me that he wasn’t coming back for me.

He’s the one that Aiden can never compete with because his brother was and still is the one who stole my heart.

I cry out, looking into the love of my life’s eyes.

  “Mason!”

It’s been fun writing and living out my dream of finally becoming an author. Thank you from above for downloading this dream to me. I also want to say thank you to all who have read this book. I know I took you on a crazy ride with Edith, but thank you for making it through the whole book. Hopefully, you aren’t too upset with me for leaving this book on a cliffhanger. I promise book two will answer all of your questions. Okay, well, most of your questions.

Thank you to everyone who supported me in writing this book. Shout out to my amazing husband, who stayed up with me whenever I had to write, and my best friend who cheered me on in the background. I wouldn’t have been able to finish this book without those two. I can’t forget my little girl who loved to sit beside me every day and help me write. Love you, Nori.

Thank you to Books and Moods for making an amazing book cover. Wow, you guys brought the ideas in my head to life. Also, for being my PA, I can’t thank you guys enough.

Thank you to Anna, who read my book and loved the story. You even came in and edited things that didn’t make sense, improving my book. You are the best.

More books to come, so keep a lookout for book two because this crazy ride isn’t over yet.
