  KEITH: Something like that. Would you have brought yourself to pot me?

  FRED: It’d be terrible for you, Keith, if you thought

  I wouldn’t. I mean, you’d have given away all that mercy for nothing. All that effort to presume innocence. Entirely wasted.

  KEITH: Well…?

  FRED: So I’d better say that I would have told on you if you hadn’t saved Byron. There now. Is that a more comfortable belief for you? Is that a kinder verdict?

  KEITH: (Angry.) I don’t need your bloody kindness!

  FRED: Oh yes, you do, Keith. Everybody does.

  (They walk off together.)
