“Sadly, one of the ways in which the magical world is far inferior to the human one is when it comes to written fiction. But our TV shows and movies are a lot better. That whole ‘magic’ thing really helps.”

“It would.” I looked at the time. “Sorry, but I have to get going. Today is supposed to be all about Sara. If you’re near a TV at five, you should watch.”

“I will,” Kyran said. “It’s exciting for her.”

“Too exciting,” I replied. “I hope this Calmberry and Lemon muffin helps.”

“Tell her I hope she does well,” Kyran said, getting up. “I’ll stop by and watch in person if I can, but I have some stuff I need to get done elsewhere first.”

“I’ll be there somewhere, but it’s a big enough stadium you might not be able to find me. Still, say hi if you do.”

“I will,” Kyran said, flashing me a smile. We left together, and I couldn’t help but want to linger. Still, I had to get going.

“I’ll see you around. We should do this again sometime,” I finally said, feeling like I was going to puke all over my shoes as soon as the words came out of my mouth.

“We should,” Kyran agreed. “I’ll see you around.”

As he walked off, I couldn’t help but feel a warm sensation in my stomach. As much as I tried to ignore it, I was definitely falling for Kyran.

  Epilogue

“Paranormals of all species, let me be the first to welcome you to this, the revealing of the first ever Golden Broom competition!”

The stadium erupted in cheers, with Ellie and I among them. Amy had, of course, stayed home to watch the announcement on TV and make sure it was recorded—she was scared of the portals and travelling between paranormal towns—but Ellie and I had come with Sara this morning to get her ready for the big night.

“Are you sure I look ok?” Sara asked in the change room, turning to check herself out in the mirror. The change rooms were all private, and huge—the space Sara had to get ready was bigger than my entire apartment back in Seattle.

“You look amazing,” Ellie replied, pointing her wand at Sara’s mane of red hair and muttering a spell. A second later, Sara’s normally slightly unruly hair was silky smooth and perfectly straight, falling down past her shoulders.

“You’re going to be fine,” I told her.

“I have to admit, I love this hair spell,” Sara said, fingering the ends of her hair.

“Good,” Ellie said. “But you don’t need it. Look at the thunder on this catsuit. You’re from a coven of thunder. You’re powerful, and strong. After all, Jupiter is the strongest of the gods, so go out there and show everyone else that you come from the best coven in the world.”

Sara nodded, and for the first time in a while, she actually looked like there might have even been a little bit of confidence there. “Ok. I can do this.”

“You can do this. Tina and I will be up in the stands watching you. You’ve got this.”

Just then came a knock on the door.

“Sara? Your assistants have to come out and join the audience. We’re getting ready to go.”

“Ok, coming,” Ellie called out, and Sara gave her a grateful look. I had a feeling she didn’t trust her voice right now.

“Thank you, both of you,” Sara finally said as we made our way toward the door. “You have no idea how much I appreciate you guys. You’re the only reason I’m here right now.”

“You’re here right now because you deserve to be,” I said firmly. “Now, go out there and show the world what you’ve got.”

That was where we had left Sara, and now Ellie and I were sitting in the section of the stands reserved for friends and family. They were great seats, right in the middle of the arena.

Eli Ring was standing on a huge platform in the center of the stadium, all eyes on him. The lights in the rest of the place had been turned off; the only things that were visible were his giant platform and the huge jumbotron above him that showed everything that was going on in close-up for the people in the higher seats.

The entire stadium was completely packed to the brim. Evidently, this was going to be a very popular sport in the paranormal world.

“Our first competitor, from the coven of Enceladus, please give a warm welcome to The Flying Flame, Anthony Fieri!”

The stadium exploded into cheers as a man who looked like he belonged in the WWE came out holding a broom high above his head, pumping his arms up as he egged on the crowd.

“Too arrogant. Sara will put him in his place,” Ellie whispered to me confidently, and I had to smile. If only it was possible to transpose Ellie’s confidence into Sara’s body.

“And now, from the coven of Jupiter, it’s Broomarella, Sara Neach!”

Ellie and I were on our feet, whooping and hollering as loudly as we could as Sara came out. The dress, with the thunder strikes moving up it, was even more impressive in person, and even if she was faking it, Sara confidently waved at the crowd as she was guided by Eli toward a podium with her name and coven written on it, surrounded by strikes of lightning. I had to say, Sara looked good. She looked like she belonged. This was where Sara was supposed to be, and I knew she would represent the coven of Jupiter really well in this new sport.

Over the next thirty minutes, twenty or so contestants in total were introduced. This was definitely a larger competition than I had expected it to be. The entire time, I watched with pride as Sara stood on her podium step. The steps were organized in a large circle so Eli Ring was almost entirely surrounded by the competitors. There was only one step to go.

“And now, ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you our final contestant. From the coven of Titan, it’s the Tsunami, Karen Voda!”

Another cheer rang up from the crowd as the final contestant was introduced, but I wasn’t one of them. In fact, I stood dead still, staring at the contestant in her sea-blue outfit. I could feel Ellie tensing up next to me as well.

Karen Voda looked exactly like me.

Book 5: Five Alarm Fire: When one of Sara's new friends and a fellow competitor in the broom flying competition is killed, Tina and the squad are immediately on the case. After all, the Chief Enforcer in Desert Plains seems more interested in his town's reputation than actually finding the killer. And with Tina honing in on the identity of her coven, she finds that she's getting more questions than answers.
