“I’m going to go home and act like nothing happened. We should both act like normal for the next few days while I get things sorted for us.”

“Okay, that sounds like a plan. Just please don’t take too long.”

He lifted her chin and brought his lips to hers, “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”

  ***

Jamie drove with a huge smile on her face. She’d spent the last few days agonizing over whether Nathan would call or not. She thought that he would possibly change his mind. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that men were money motivated. When you’re a married billionaire with no pre-nup, you tend to want to stay married. Leaving your wife for someone else was a huge risk because your wife could walk away with half of your fortune.

Well, he finally called. Nathan called her that morning and told her that the private jet was ready. He was going to meet her at the airstrip. The night before Jamie packed all of her bags and said a silent prayer for Nathan; by now, Stephanie knew that he was leaving her so she was sure that he would experience some emotional turmoil. Jamie wasn’t naïve; he probably still loved Stephanie even though he was no longer in love with her. She would do her best to be patient with him and to enjoy their two week vacation.

Yes, they were going to have an amazing two weeks of traveling to exotic places. She couldn’t wait to have a drink in her hand with her man by her side. Jamie already prepped two of the people on her team that she trusted. They were ready to combat the media as a united front. Sure, there was only so much that they could do because it was a scandal, but it would help immensely.

She was so damned happy and filled with so much nervous energy that she could just burst into a ray of sunshine. She refused to dwell on the past and about all of the ugliness that was behind her. She would only focus on the future and the road ahead of her. She turned up her stereo and listened to Pharrell sing about how happy he was.

She didn’t see. She didn’t the car speeding up behind her. She didn’t even see it when it pulled up beside her. But she saw it when it swerved to the right towards her. She jerked her steering wheel to the right out of pure panic and instinct. Her car rolled in the ditch, her head slammed against air bag, and her world faded to black.

  Chapter11

Jamie could barely open her eyes; she just knew that her body hurt all over. The faint sound of beeping got her attention. It was annoying. She needed to turn her alarm off, except, that’s not how her alarm sounded. This beep was a constant and light sound that rattled the nerves. It reminded her of when a boy in her sixth grade class kept tickling her neck with a feather, it was light but irritating. Her alarm at home was loud, more like a punch to the face. Besides, she would have to be in her bed to hear her alarm at home but she wasn’t in her own bed. No, the bed that she was currently in wasn’t completely uncomfortable, it didn’t compare to what she had at home.

Why could she hardly move? Why did her body ache all over? She fought to open her eyes, and finally, she succeeded. She wasn’t in her room at all. It was a hospital. That’s when she remembered: she had a car accident. Where was she going anyway?

“Her eyes are open!” she heard her pop pop say. “You there baby?”

“Mmhmm,” was all that she could manage.

“Hey, we’re here with you,” another voice said. She turned to look and Christian was standing there, her grandfather and her ex-fiancé were there in the room with her.

“We’re going to get the doctor. Don’t try to move or speak baby,” her grandfather said sternly.

She lay there, trying to remember everything that happened but it was all so fuzzy. She wanted to go home and get the heck out of that place.

“Hello Jamie,” Dr. McDreamy said once he entered the room. He was tall, with boyish good looks, and blonde hair. “I’m Dr. Finch, I’m your doctor. You had an accident.”

“I know,” Jamie said in annoyance. “That’s why I’m here.”

Everyone laughed lightheartedly as if her annoyance were cute. She frowned. If she were well enough to punch them all, she would.

“Can you tell us what happened?”

“I was driving, a car came too close, I drove off the road.”

“Where were you going?” Dr. Finch asked.

She opened her mouth to answer then clamped it shut. She didn’t know, she couldn’t remember where the hell she was going. That sucked. “I... I don’t know. I can’t remember. I don’t have amnesia do I? I don’t have time for that.”

The doctor laughed. “Things will probably be fuzzy for a bit. You have a few minor sprains all over your body and you banged your face up pretty good. You’ll be out of commission for about two weeks to a month. You’re extremely blessed that is wasn’t worse. I’ve seen people completely paralyzed from accidents like this. God was with you.”

“It would’ve been nice if Jesus took the wheel and prevented me from crashing at all,” Jamie replied.

“Please forgive my granddaughter, she doesn’t have a filter when she’s in pain, upset... or ever really.”

“When can I go home? How did you all know that I was here?”

“The two of us were listed as your next of kin,” her granddad replied.

Jamie laid her head back against the pillows and sighed. She forgot to take Christian off her next of kin. She didn’t think he was getting out of jail anytime soon, she swore she would fix it. It was just one of those things that she never got around to.

“I’m going to leave you with your family for a little while. I’ll be back in about an hour and so will the nurses. We’re going to talk about how to get you back on track.” He smiled at everyone and left the room.

“I’m so glad that you’re okay,” her granddad said with relief. “I was surprised to see Christian here. You didn’t tell me that the two of you were seeing each other again.”

She looked at the two of them in confusion. She and Christian weren’t seeing each other again, but she didn’t have the strength correct the error. She did, however, notice that Christian didn’t say anything. What was his problem? Had something happened between her and Christian that she didn’t remember? She felt so cloudy and nothing made complete sense. It bothered her that she couldn’t remember exactly what was going on with her. Why didn’t she remember where she was headed?

  ***

Jamie lay on the couch propped up by pillows and was eating grapes. She felt like an injured queen because Christian waited on her hand and foot. She appreciated how attentive he was being and it was much needed. Not many men would have taken care of her the way that he had over the last few days. If she needed anything, he got it for her. If she needed some conversation, he provided it. If she needed quiet, he remained silent. If she needed calls to go out or work to get done, he made sure that she had everything she needed.

Right now, she was being a bum and enjoying TV, it felt nice even though her body didn’t. Her door opened and Christian walked in with her suitcases. She blinked.

“Are those from my car?” she asked.

“Yep, they’re from your car. These were recovered from the trunk. Were you planning on taking a vacation or something?”

It was then that everything hit her like a ton of bricks. She was on her way to see Nathan! They were about to get out of the states and enjoy some time together. She was heading to the airport to meet him and they were going to run away together.

Anger rose in her chest. Where in the hell was Nathan? He hadn’t tried to call or see her after she nearly died. She nearly died trying to be with him and he didn’t even have the decency to pick up the damned phone.

“Are you okay?” he asked. “Did you remember anything?”

“Stop asking me a million questions!” she snapped. “Thank you for all of your help but I think it’s best if you left now.”

“Wow, what have I done to you?” he asked, a look of hurt on his face.

“You’re not my man, you don’t have to be here. Just leave.”

  “Ok
ay, I don’t know what your problem is, but I’m gonna let you sleep it off. I’m heading to the guest bedroom. You need me here; you can hardly walk to the bathroom on your own. I’m not going anyway. I’ll be here until you can take care of yourself,” he said.

  “Yeah, whatever,” she mumbled.

She knew she was wrong. She knew that her anger was being directed at the wrong person. Christian was only trying to help her and she lashed out at him undeservingly. She had to add that incident to the list of things she needed to apologize for.

  ***

The following morning, Christian left for work and Jamie was able to breathe again. Ever since she remembered what happened to her, she was angry. It was difficult to be nice to Christian and she didn’t know why. She needed him but she wanted him to leave her the hell alone. She wanted everyone to leave her the hell alone. She was getting ready to uproot her life for a man that didn’t give two shits about her.

Her stomach churned when she remembered how ignorant and happy she was as she headed to the airport. In her mind, life was finally about to be perfect. She was finally about to have everything that she ever wanted. She loved Nathan and Nathan loved her, nothing could stand in their way. She was so stupid.

Her doorbell rang and she slowly headed for the door. After finally getting there, she looked out of the peephole. It was Nathan. She shook her head and opened it.

He looked just as good as she remembered. She resisted the urge to smooth down her hair or adjust her clothes. She had a right to look disheveled. He, however, wore one of his signature grey suits with a brilliant blue tie. It made him look dangerously sexy.

“I’m so happy to see that you’re okay,” he let out a sigh of relief. “Can I come in?”

Jamie stepped away from the door and walked back towards the couch without saying anything. He closed the door behind him and followed her inside. He took a seat on the chair next to the brown leather couch.

“Why are you just coming to see me now? Why didn’t you come to see me earlier?” Jamie asked. Hurt filled her voice and it pissed her off. She didn’t want to be hurt; she wanted to be angry.

“I’m so sorry I did come by but when I got to the hospital there was someone already there and I didn’t want to raise any suspicions.”

Jamie closed her eyes and nodded. She swallowed her anger but it rose again. How could she have a decent conversation with him if she was too pissed to hear what he had to say? He was the man that she loved and he claimed to love her. The point was that he was there now. They could still have the life that they dreamed of. If he still wanted the same thing and so did she, couldn’t it still work?

Her curiosity got the best of her. “So have you told Stephanie that you’re leaving her? Did you follow through with the plan? Is our plan still on?”

“I wanted to, please believe that I do. When I prepared to tell her about my plans, she revealed to me that she was pregnant. She’s having our baby,” Nathan revealed.

“What! You’ve got to be kidding me! You told me that you weren’t sleeping with her anymore. How can she have a baby if you two aren’t sleeping together? Please tell me that she used frozen sperm or something like that. Please tell me that she used a turkey baster and that you didn’t impregnate her the good old fashioned way.” Jamie was furious. She was beyond her boiling point—the pot was boiling over. If she had to the strength to slap him, she would have.

“I know, and I’m sorry. It’s rare when we have sex but every now and then I have to do it to keep her happy. I never hear the end of it if I deny her for long periods of time. It’s easier to just give her what she wants every now and then.”

“Just shut up. I can’t stand to hear any more of your lies. I’m so sick of listening to you lie to me. Once again, you bring me some bullshit! I fell for it a couple of times but it won’t be happening again. Get the hell out of my house.”

Nathan looked defeated and weary. “I wish that things could be different, but I have to look at the bigger picture. I have to take care of the family that I created.”

Tears streamed down Jamie’s face. But what about her? What about the love that she had for him? It was a love that he encouraged. She tried to live her life without him, she tried to move on, but he was the one that came back. She opened her heart to him again and was not only crushed in spirit, but she was crushed in body as well. She almost lost her life in an effort to be with him and he couldn’t even keep up his end of a promise.

That wasn’t a real man. A real man stood behind the choices that he made and didn’t cower to manipulative bitches. That is what Stephanie was, a manipulative bitch. She could have told Nathan all about what Stephanie was doing because women knew other women. Women knew just how conniving their species could be, but she saved her breath. What was the point? It wouldn’t change his mind and it would only hurt her more to have to continue to talk to him.

“Well, live your life in your pretty picture and stay the fuck out of my frame,” Jamie spat.

“I love you so much,” Nathan replied.

“No, you love yourself and that’s probably the only person that you’ll ever love. Now get the hell out of my house,” she yelled.

Nathan rose to his feet and did as she requested.

It felt so good to be back in the swing of things. It had been a few weeks and Jamie finally felt good enough to throw herself back into her career. She was fully healed and taking no prisoners. It was only her second day back in her office and she’d already knocked out four meetings, closed two new clients, and secured some appearances for the clients she personally oversaw.

She felt like nothing could ruin her day, at least, until Stephanie showed up at her office. Stephanie walked into her office as if she owned it. Her hips rocked from side to side as she stepped confidently in her blue stilettos.

“How may I help you?” Jamie asked. She didn’t have any patience for Stephanie. As far as she was concerned, Nathan and Stephanie could go jump in a lake.

“I just came by to see how you were doing. Can I take a seat?” Stephanie sat down on the opposite side of Jamie’s desk without waiting for an invitation.

  “I’m fine. Thanks for asking.”

“Well, I know that Nathan came to see you and I hope that you’ve heard the good news by now,” Stephanie smiled politely as she rubbed her flat belly.

Jamie tried not to roll her eyes like a teen but she failed miserably. “Yes, as I’m sure that you already know, I know of the baby.”

“So how do you feel?” Stephanie stared at her with a slight smile.

“What do you mean? It is what it is, and everything happens for a reason.”

Stephanie pursed her lips and chose her words carefully, “I guess that’s true. However, you shouldn’t be too upset. You started playing a game that you could never win. You were out of your league from the moment you wrapped your lips around my husband’s cock.”

“Get out of my office,” Jamie demanded.

Jamie knew the law. If she beat Stephanie up and she lost her baby, then she could get tried for murder. In this case, it would have been a double homicide. Why did people insist on bringing the “ghetto” out of her?

Stephanie gave a triumphant smile; she loved winning. “Well I’m going to get out of your hair and let you get back to work.” She emphasized the word work as if it were a dirty word. “I know that you have to make your living somehow.”

  “Goodbye, Stephanie.”

Stephanie made her way to door and turned around before she left. “You may want to break off all contact with my husband. Next time you may have a lot more than some bruises and broken bones. It’s always a good thing to count your blessings. Wouldn’t you agree?”

Jamie stared at her in horror. Had she just heard what she thought that she heard? She was speechless as Stephanie disappeared from her office. It was clearly an implied threat. Now she was left to wonder if her accident was really an accident at all.

  Sh
e was having such a great day and Stephanie messed it up. She should have had her escorted from her office when she found out Stephanie was waiting for her. She came there just for the purpose of getting into her head, and she succeeded.

  ***

Christian was cheering her up. He didn’t stay with her anymore but he came by on most evenings. She enjoyed having Christian around. She was reminded as to why she fell in love with him in the first place. The love she had was different now but still, he was a joy.

“These burgers are so good,” Jamie said as she bit into the juicy burger in her hands. “I swear you still make the best burgers. I’m gonna have to spend some serious time working out. I feel like you’re trying to fatten me up,” Jamie laughed.

“I don’t think that you will ever be fat. It’s like your body doesn’t believe in gaining weight or something,” Christian offered.

“That may have been true years ago, but now my body likes to store it as if I’ll be hibernating for the winter. I have to work hard to maintain my slender figure. I really need to start back working out, the accident threw me off.”

“I understand,” he said. “It doesn’t take long for our bodies to realize that we’re older. We can’t do the things that we used to.”

“Exactly, that’s why I steer clear of certain foods. I don’t even eat pizza anymore,” she admitted.

“See, that’s a lie. We were just eating pizza the other day.”

“Nope, you were eating pizza. If you noticed, I didn’t have one slice.”

“So you’re trying to tell me that I finished a medium pizza by myself?” he asked.

“You do the math,” Jamie giggled. “I didn’t have any.”

“What in the world would make you give up pizza? I just don’t see the logic,” he said as he polished off a fresh sweet potato fry.

“I loved it too much and I was starting to order it regularly. You know how I can stress eat, so I don’t tempt myself. I wouldn’t be able to fit in any of my clothes.”

He shrugged. “Oh well, more pizza for me.”

“You can have it all, just don’t eat it here.”
