“About last night…” she started.
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I know I was a little… abrupt after…”
“I know.”
“Yes, well…” she sounded slightly embarrassed herself.
“Tell me Sasha.”
“I’ve just never had a man want to talk when he could have…”
“I can imagine.” Calvin replied.
“Well I took it as an insult last night,” Sasha told him. “But this morning… things just looked a little clearer and I realized how amazing it is to find a guy who’s more interested in what you have to say than what’s underneath your clothes.”
Calvin waited for her to continue; he sensed that she had more to say.
“I remember you, Calvin,” she said unexpectedly.
“What?”
“I remembered that day, the kid with the skateboard. The freaking burrito flying everywhere, and the sweet guy with the shy blush who came to my rescue.”
“You remember?”
“Yes.”
“Oh,” was all Calvin was able to say in his amazement.
“I guess I’m calling to ask you out again Calvin,” Sasha said.
Calvin paused for a long while; the offer seemed suddenly inconsequential. He was shocked at how indifferent he was to it. There was no excitement attached to her offer, no passion, no happiness. He was perhaps a little flattered and that was it. He realized he still felt as though something essential was missing.
“I… can I think about it Sasha?” Calvin asked as gently as he was able to.
“Of course,” she replied graciously.
Once he had hung up, Calvin went back into the living room where Randy and Steven were waiting expectantly for him.
“Well?” Randy asked immediately.
“She asked me out again,” Calvin told them. “And she finally managed to remember me.”
“The long haired nerd that you were, you mean?”
“Yes.”
“And what does that change?” Steven asked.
Calvin shook his head, “I’m not exactly sure.”
“So are you going out with her again or not?”
Calvin shrugged, “I don’t know.”
“Wow,” Randy breathed, as Steven nodded alongside him. “Three and a half years.”
Calvin wished that he could simply pick up the phone and talk to Morgan. He knew that she would give him great advice, the kind that was best for him. He found himself staring in Steven’s direction.
“What?” Steven asked self-consciously, noticing the intensity of Calvin’s stare.
“You spoke to Morgan?”
“Oh,” Steven said relaxing. “Yes. Yes I did.”
Calvin nodded preparing himself.
“How is she?”
Steven looked suddenly uncomfortable, “Fine.”
“Did you ask her out?”
“I did,” Steven answered shortly.
“And?” Calvin asked impatiently. “What did she say?”
“She turned me down,” Steven admitted.
“Oh,” Calvin said, ashamed at how happy that confession made him. He was aware that there was more than just happiness he was feeling. He was feeling enormously relieved as well.
“Did she give you a reason?” Calvin asked.
“Not really,” Steven replied, but his eyes were studiously avoiding Calvin’s.
Calvin turned to Randy and he noticed that he seemed a little uncomfortable too. They were clearly keeping something from him. That was obvious, it always had been. The three of them had always been so close that it was always evident when one of them had a secret.
“Okay guys,” Calvin said pointedly. “What’s going on?”
“What makes you think there’s anything going on?” Steven asked too innocently.
“For God’s sake,” Calvin said. “How long have I known the two of you? Whatever it is, just tell me.”
“First answer me this,” Steven said.
“Okay. What?”
“Are you going to see Sasha again or not?”
“What?” Calvin asked annoyed and confused at the same time. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Just tell us.”
“Steven!” Calvin bellowed in frustration.
“Fine!” Steven said getting up. “The reason Morgan turned me down, was because she’s in love with you!”
Calvin stood there facing Steven, with a look of utter bewilderment on his face. “Say that again?”
Steven sighed, “She’s in love with you Calvin.”
Calvin shook his head in an attempt to clear it, “I… this is… why didn’t she tell me?!”
“How could she?” Steven said. “You were always talking about another woman. She didn’t want to ruin that for you and she wasn’t interested in playing second fiddle.”
“Oh,” Calvin said sinking into a chair, he looked back up at Steven “You’re not lying to me?”
“I’m not.”
“Is that why she cut off our meetings so soon?”
“I think so,” Steven replied.
“So… what are you going to do?” Randy asked.
Calvin exhaled deeply, “I have no idea.”
“It’s simple,” Steven said. “Which girl do you care about more?”
“I… that’s—”
“Yes?”
“You’ve spent time with both of them now,” Steven told him calmly. “So think about which one you care about more, and think about which one cares about you more.”
Calvin nodded, still trying to process this revelation.
“This is my advice Calvin,” Randy said before they left. “Pick the girl that you’ll miss the most.”
Calvin shut the door behind them, finding himself going through the last few weeks of his life like a picture book, as though the answer was hidden in there somewhere.

Morgan checked her phone after she had finished her run that morning. She had three missed calls from Molly. She sighed; it looked like she was going to lose another lazy day at home with Mowgli. She hopped into the shower, and after she was done, she called Molly.
“What is it?”
“There’s a client here who’s insisting that he meet you today,” Molly informed her urgently.
“Didn’t you tell him I was off today?”
“I did,” Molly replied. “But he wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
Morgan sighed, “What’s this guy’s name?”
“Derek something or the other,” Molly replied evasively.
“All right fine,” Morgan said finally. “I’ll be in soon.”
She hung up and drove into office. Molly looked strangely excitable, but Morgan breezed past her and into her office, shutting the door behind her before the scent of flowers hit her. She came to a stunned standstill. Her office had been filled with roses. All she could see was red, and in the midst of them all stood Calvin.
“Hi Morgan.” he said.
“Are you Derek something or the other?”
He smiled, “I am.”
“What are you doing here?”
Calvin came forward, “I came to tell you something important.”
“Okay…?” Morgan said, still processing.
“Yesterday when you told me you wanted to end our arrangement, I was so confused and preoccupied with myself that I didn’t even realize what I was feeling. It wasn’t until later that I realized that I felt empty and hollow inside. Like something very important was missing, and it wasn’t till this morning that I was able to finally put my finger on it. What I was missing, was you.”
Morgan sighed, “What about Sasha? The woman you’re in love with?”
“You were right Morgan,” Calvin replied. “I was naïve about her. She was a fairy tale that I had built up in my head. She wasn’t really real; she was the object of my loneliness, she was something to dream about at night. I was in love with someone I n
ever really knew.”
“But now you have a chance to know her…?”
“I’ve realized that she and I are not right for each other.”
Calvin came forward, he reached out and took Morgan’s hand in his.
“But I think you and I are.”
“Calvin—”
“I’ve been a fool Morgan,” Calvin said passionately. “A complete fool, but I’ve realized now that it’s you I want. You’re the real fairy tale.”
Calvin leaned in and touched his lips to Morgan’s. She tried to pull back, but his hands encircled her and prevented her from moving. She found that she didn’t want to fight back. The only thing she wanted now was to surrender to him, give herself over to the moment. His lips were soft against hers, and slowly they turned hard and fierce against her own. He picked her up and carried her to the sofa against the wall, laying her back on it. He leaned over her, his hands exploring the length of her legs as he pulled up her skirt.
An involuntary moan escaped her as his lips traveled over her body, slowly undoing the buttons of her shirt. He kissed her breasts, cupping and kneading them in his hands, and then slid his tongue down to her stomach as she pulled at his hair, trying to control the shudders that were escaping her. Calvin brought his face back up to hers, kissing her cheeks, her eyelids, and her nose softly.
“Do you want this?” Calvin whispered to her.
“Yes,” Morgan said, “Yes, I want this.”
They pulled at one another's clothes until they were bared before each other, their hands and mouths moving hungrily over one another, as their bodies grew warmer and their need became more urgent.
Calvin carefully slid her legs apart and moved between them as she drew her ankles up the back of his legs, pulling him closer to her. He entered her slowly, filling her inch by inch as he gasped at the feel of her around him, and she in turn lost her breath as they became one and began to move in synchronized rhythm.
They fit together perfectly, and in their heated embrace and impassioned lovemaking, they both found a wholeness and satisfaction that was unlike anything they had ever known.
They held one another tightly as their bodies culminated in ecstasy, clinging to each other as they trembled with love.
Calvin was amazed at how alive he felt, how natural and easy and comfortable and right it had all felt. Morgan lay with her head on Calvin’s shoulder, as his hand traced circles around her naked hip. Every now and then, he laid a soft kiss on her forehead.
“Are you happy?” Calvin asked her as they lay together on her sofa.
“Yes,” Morgan whispered back. “Are you?”
Calvin smiled. “You made me happy the day I met you. I was just too stupid to realize it then.”
Morgan smiled, placing a kiss on his chest.
“We’re going to be deliriously happy,” Calvin informed her with new confidence in his voice.
“We are?” Morgan said with a laugh.
“Oh yes,” Calvin replied. “I’ve never told you this about myself, but I can predict the future.”
“Can you?” Morgan said in mock seriousness. “That’s something. Tell me, what do you see one year from now?”
Calvin pretended to concentrate. "I see you and I, lying together just like this.” Calvin said. “But on a nice cushy bed, and there’s a massive diamond on your ring finger.”
“Oh?” Morgan said surprised, but secretly thrilled. “You and I are engaged a year from now? You ask me to marry you?”
“Of course, and you’ll say yes naturally,” Calvin replied matter-of-factly. “Immediately and without hesitation. In fact you become so happy that you keep asking me to sleep with you. Over and over again, until I’m completely exhausted.”
Morgan laughed.
“Is that right?” Morgan laughed out loud.
“Yup,” Calvin replied happily.
“I’m not sure you can predict the future at all,” Morgan teased.
Calvin laughed, “Just you wait.”
He leaned over to her and kissed her lips, and she thought that maybe he was right.
