His fingers explored my ass, finding the hidden places that ached to be found. His fingers brushed my moist lips, his fingertip brushing against my clit, making it stand on end and reach out and beg to be touched again. I moved my hips a little, encouraging his touch. As I did, I forced his cock back against his belly as my belly rubbed against the length of it, making it grow harder as our kiss sent waves of pleasure through both of us.
I wanted him with the eagerness of a teenager who has no idea what this moment truly means. I wanted him with abandonment, no longer clinging to the anchor of the past. I wanted him with a desperation that was stronger than the desire to protect the people I loved or learn the truth of Peter’s accident. Nothing else mattered in this moment. I wanted him. That was all.
I reached between us and guided him to me, pulling him against my opening, taking him inside me as my nerves all woke up and danced to the pleasure that such a simple act could create. He closed his eyes and a delicious groan slipped from between his lips. I watched, awed by the beauty of this man, by how much he looked like my Luke now that I knew the truth.
We sat still for a long moment, just adjusting and enjoying the feel of one another. His hold on me tightened for a moment and I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding on to him, too. After a moment, he opened his eyes and looked up at me, all this need and want and love just there on his face for the world to see. And then he gripped my hips and pulled me up, then let me down, encouraging me to move into an easy rhythm that only increased the pleasure, the desire.
I watched him as we moved, beholding moods dance over his face that I’d never noticed before. I don’t know if he’d always been this expressive and I never noticed, or if the past two years had changed him enough to allow him to be this expressive. I don’t suppose it mattered. But what I saw on his face in those few minutes was enough to not only repair my broken heart, but to fill it to the brim with everything that had been missing.
I bit my bottom lip as my orgasm began to build, fighting it. I wanted this to last. I wanted to be in this moment for as long as possible. But pleasure couldn’t be stalled. I leaned back against his arms, pressing my hips hard against his as his cock filled me to the point of no return. I cried out, my lower belly quivering, pulling him inside more and more until it almost felt as though we were actually one body, meant to always be connected.
I felt his arms tighten and his knees come up, forcing me back, his cock sliding away. I protested, but he was lost in his own pleasure, his cock releasing streams of it deep inside of me. He buried his face against my shoulder, his moans more like screams than simple groans. And then he shivered, his knees lowering and his cock sliding easily, deep inside of me, again.
We sat there for a moment or two, and then we fell over, tangled in each other, still one. He tugged on my hip and pulled me under him, his mouth grazing my jaw, searching for my lips. We kissed again, our breath mingling on each other’s lips. Then he began to move again and…I didn’t think I could be moved to such heights again so soon. But my body surprised me, responding to his touch as if it were the first time, like I couldn’t get enough of him. And he was insatiable, rocking against me for so long I thought if I reached my peak just one more time I might go completely insane.
When it was finally over and we lay exhausted in one another’s arms, I closed my eyes and drifted to sleep with a smile on my lips.
This was worth waiting for.
Chapter 17
Hayden
I sat in the backseat of the car and pretended I didn’t hear the two of them laughing and carrying on. They were much too happy for a couple driving to meet the person who would turn the CIA on their heads. But, again, a little happiness wasn’t such a bad thing, considering all the drama that had been going on around us these last few months.
Dominic had grabbed me as I was leaving the motel this morning. He and Amy were just two doors down, so he must have been watching for me. I thought for a moment that he wanted to tag along, to go to this meeting to make sure it went smoothly. Instead, it turned out there was something else on his mind.
“How well do you know Luke?” he asked me.
I shrugged. “We were in basic together. And SEAL training.”
“Did you serve together overseas?”
I shook my head. “We were assigned to different units.”
Dominic looked around, his eyes kind of shifty, glancing at the door where Amy was watching us, down the corridor, and down the opposite side of the long, dirty corridor.
“What’s going on?”
Dominic focused on me again. “I talked to Megan about this last night, but I don’t think she heard me. She’s so thrilled to have him back that she doesn’t want to hear anything bad about him.”
I frowned. “What do you mean, bad?”
Dominic stepped back and leaned against the railing that separated the concrete corridor from the parking lot. “You remember that hitman that came after me and Amy? The one that ran us off the road?”
“Of course.”
“You remember, too, that Dante shot him just as he was about to tell me something?”
“I remember.”
“He was about to tell me that Luke Murphy was working with the bad CIA agents who are running this whole terrorist cell.”
“We know that.”
“But he’d already told me that Luke was the one who killed Megan’s brother.”
I tilted my head slightly, studying Dominic’s face. “He did?”
“Yeah.” Dominic crossed his arms over his chest. “Is it possible that Luke is still playing both sides? Is it possible that he might be out for his own gain?”
I shook my head. “Luke is fiercely loyal, Dominic. He would never do anything to put Megan in danger.”
“What about the rest of us? He found Megan and pulled her out of here, but he left the rest of us high and dry.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Of course I do. And you do too. Look at it objectively, Hayden.”
“Dominic—”
“He called those people and told them what we knew. He told them that Megan had fixed the notes and was able to read them. He probably told them that you and I were there with her.”
“But they didn’t come after us. They went after him.”
“And Dragon. Of course they would have assumed that the files were at the office. They went there, looking for us.”
“But he had to have known we were at Sam’s. Why didn’t he tell them that?”
“To get Megan out.”
I shook my head. “Your theory makes little sense, Dominic. If Luke was leaving us high and dry, why did they come back?”
“Megan. She would have insisted.”
As much as I hated to admit it, he was right.
“But what could Luke’s ulterior motive be? Why did he change his face and hide out in plain sight? Why did he stick around when he could have been in the Bahamas all this time? If he’s this big shot in this CIA scam, why isn’t he in France running the whole operation?”
“Megan.”
“You think Luke’s gone bad, but he’s playing games to get Megan back?”
“Yeah. You see the way he looks at her. The guy’s head over heels for her.”
That was true. It’d always been true.
“I just can’t see Luke turning on his country. And killing Peter? The two grew up together, Dominic. They were like brothers.”
“I have this friend in California, Edgar. He’s with the CIA. He was one of Emily’s handlers when we were over there.”
“Yeah, I remember you mentioning him.”
Dominic studied me for a second. “He’s one of the good guys; I have absolutely no doubt about that.”
“Okay.”
“I overheard Luke talking to him on the phone last night.”
My eyebrows rose. “Doesn’t that prove he’s a good guy?”
“But the thing is, Edgar has been playing both sides of the
game to keep himself safe. What if he’s working with Luke to keep up appearances? What if he simply doesn’t know that it’s Luke? He told me that Emily had identified someone close to someone I knew in Houston was behind all this, was at the top of the hierarchy of the terrorist group. What if she meant Luke? His name is in her notes.”
“He also said that there might be two groups at work. What if Emily got them confused? What if Luke’s right and it’s this Garner in charge of the bad guys and he’s the one leading the good guys?”
“I just…I get the feeling we don’t know everything.”
“We probably don’t. But that doesn’t mean that Luke’s dirty.”
Dominic reluctantly nodded. “I’m uneasy with him. He told me last night that I didn’t know anything and that I shouldn’t fill Megan’s head with lies.”
“When did he tell you that?”
Dominic shrugged. “Before everyone left the church.”
I couldn’t lie. That bothered me a little.
“All we can do is keep our eyes open and hope our trust isn’t in the wrong person.”
I thought about that now as I watched Megan and Luke act like a couple of teenagers in the front seat. I’d promised Sam I’d keep Megan safe. Did that mean I’d have to come between her and the man she loved, the man she’d just married?
I hoped not.
“We should be a little early,” Megan said, twisting in her seat to look at me. “Do you want to stop and get something to eat?”
“Sure.”
I hadn’t been to Dallas in a while, not since a job had taken me there some months ago. I stared out the window like a child, staring up at the buildings all around me. It was a beautiful city.
Luke pulled the car into a parking garage downtown. I helped Megan out of the car and wrapped her up in my arms.
“Sam would be so happy for you.”
She looked up at me, tears in her eyes.
“You think so?”
“Yeah. All she wanted was for you to be happy. And you are so clearly happy.”
She took my face between her hands. “She’d want you to be happy, too.”
That choked me up a little. I missed Sam more than words could say. And I knew she was right. Sam was so selfless that she would want me to move on and find happiness.
“I’m working on it,” I said after clearing my throat a few times.
She reached up on her tiptoes and kissed me lightly. “I’m going to make sure you do.”
“Hey! Should I be jealous?”
Luke came up behind her and snatched her away from me, pulling her tight against his chest. I watched, trying not to be annoyed by his possessiveness. I couldn’t help but hear Dominic’s words in the back of my head every time I looked at him.
It bothered me.
I followed them up into the hotel where we’d stopped, and into the restaurant. They were teasing each other about some steak dinner they’d shared years ago. I wasn’t following, my thoughts too focused on Sam and Dominic and everything that had gone down in the last few months.
“Earth to Hayden,” Luke said as we settled at a table.
“Were you talking to me?”
Luke laughed. “Yeah, man, I said your name like four times.”
“Sorry.”
Megan looked apologetic and that bothered me, too. I didn’t want her pity.
Luke excused himself a few minutes later to go the restroom. I followed a moment later and waited for him in the little hallway outside the bathrooms.
“Stalking me?” he asked when he spotted me.
“I thought we should talk a minute.”
A dark look crossed his face, but he didn’t object. He came to stand beside me against the wall, facing out so that I couldn’t clearly see his face.
“What is this about? Dominic say something to you?”
“What makes you think it’s Dominic?”
Luke shrugged, his shoulders moving heavy against the wall. “Just a good guess.”
“He says you’re talking with a friend of his in California.”
“Edgar Olsen.”
“Yeah. He says that his friend plays both sides of the game and he’s not sure which side you’re on.”
Luke nodded. “He thinks I’m playing a game on Megan.”
“He likes Megan. Megan gave him a job when he really needed one. And she’s been loyal to him in a way few people had been.”
“I know.”
“Megan had his back when those people came after him.”
“And I didn’t? Is that your point?”
“Not necessarily. But you shot that man while he was in the middle of telling Dominic about Garner and all that mess.”
“Because I didn’t want Megan—or any of you—learning the truth. I was here to protect you from exactly what’s happening now.”
“And what’s happening now, Luke? You’re the only one they seem to be after at the moment. How do we know that Garner isn’t the good CIA agent and you’re the bad one?”
“If I was the bad agent, don’t you think I’d be in France sitting on my throne?”
“Is that where Garner is?”
Luke twisted, eyeing me like we didn’t have years of friendship under our belts. “Do you really distrust me that much?”
“You have to remember that we’re the ones that were here with Megan after you left. Me and Dominic.”
“I appreciate your looking after her. But I’m back now.”
“She’s my friend, Luke. And I promised Sam that I would look out for her.”
Luke stared at the wall across from us, the muscle in his jaw working.
“I guess you’ll just have to trust me, Hayden.”
He walked away before I could say anything else.
Somehow, I felt more nervous about him now than I had before we talked.
Chapter 18
Megan
There was tension between Hayden and Luke when they came back from the bathroom. They bickered over lunch about stupid things, like the entrees they each chose. Then they argued over whether or not we should wait in the bar for Julie to show, or go do some window-shopping until the appointed time. The only thing the two of them could agree on was that neither wanted me to meet with Julie alone. I had to veto them on that one. A person like Julie didn’t meet with crowds of people she didn’t know. She would only meet with me.
“You’ll sit at the bar, but you’ll stay away from us.”
Luke shook his head. “Megan—”
“This is the way it has to be.” I stood to my full height. “We have to do this right. She trusts me, but she doesn’t know you guys.”
I could see the struggle in Hayden’s eyes. He didn’t want to agree with Luke, but he didn’t like the idea of my being alone with Julie. I touched his arm lightly.
“You guys have to trust me.”
Luke shook his head, but he didn’t argue anymore. I leaned up and kissed his cheek.
“It’s almost over,” I said softly.
He pressed his fingers into my hair and tugged me closer to him, kissing me almost roughly.
“Be careful,” he whispered.
I walked away, sliding into a booth that stood against the front windows of the bar. I could see Hayden and Luke settle at the bar, sitting with several stools between them, each with a drink in front of him. They were handsome, these men who were so important to my life. I loved that they were worried about me and that they cared enough to fight over how to best protect me. I just wished they trusted me enough to believe I knew what I was doing.
The message came a little less than half an hour after I sat down.
“Room 215. Come up.”
Hayden and Luke really weren’t going to like this.
I slipped out of the booth and out of the bar before either of them noticed. I expected one of them to come up behind me as I waited for the elevator to come. But I managed to make it on without any problem. I jabbed my finger against the second floor button a
nd watched the lobby disappear.
I have to admit to a little trepidation as I felt the elevator lift. What if this was a trick? What if Julie had turned on me, if she’d been approached by Garner and gave me away? What if I was walking to my death?
Luke was making me a little paranoid.
I took a deep breath as the doors slid open, forcing myself to take that first step with confidence. And then another. I knew Julie. I trusted her. This was going to be okay.
By the time I got to her door, I was as confident as I was going to get. I knocked without hesitation. She surprised me by yanking the door open herself, a bright smile on her familiar face.
She looked like just another Texas sweetheart. She was tall and slender, her long hair so curly that it was a wild storm around her face. She was older than I was, but her fair skin was so smooth that she seemed younger. And that smile…
“Megan!”
She threw her arms around me and laughed. Despite myself, I was so relieved that I laughed a little hysterically as I hugged her back. We stood there for a long minute, just holding each other. She finally stepped back and gestured for me to come into the room as she wiped tears from her cheeks.
“I couldn’t believe it when you texted.”
“I told you I’d keep in touch.”
“Yeah, but this isn’t about keeping in touch. This is more, right?”
She walked over to the bed and settled on the end of it. She wasn’t looking at me. Instead, she was studying her nails, biting them as if it was the most interesting thing she’d done all day. But I knew her better. When I met her in Afghanistan, she was doing the same thing. But I learned the hard way that she was listening to everything going on around her.
Julie was a reporter attached to our unit for a couple of months. I was complaining about a failed operation the day before. Someone pointed her out to me and told me to keep my opinions to myself, but I pointed out that she wasn’t paying attention. However, my words were printed in the New York Times and half a dozen other newspapers and websites over the following week. When I confronted her, she just laughed.
“I’m a reporter. It’s my job to observe and report.”
