The Way Back Home

“Well, isn’t this a picture?” Kelly teased, walking across the grass with her new husband, Jared. “You’ve got your hands full. Where’s Alicia?”

  “Putting candles on the cakes.”

  “As in two cakes?”

“She insists that the kids have their own cakes. Apparently, she always got stuck eating vanilla because it was Rob’s favorite.”

“Alicia will make sure that Maddie and Andy always feel special on their birthdays. Thank God we’re not having twins,” Kelly added to Jared.

“Yeah, one is enough,” Jared said with a grin.

“One is never enough,” Alicia interjected, returning with the candles. She hugged Kelly and gave her baby belly a loving pat. “I can’t wait to meet your son. Two more weeks!”

“I’m hoping he comes while Ian is home for spring break.”

“Ian is doing so well now,” Alicia said. “He’s graduating in June, right?”

“Yes, and then going to grad school to become a vet. He’s finally moving in a good direction. No more gambling. No more bookies.” She paused. “I can’t believe Andy is walking.”

“Maddie won’t be far behind,” Alicia proclaimed as they watched her crawl over to her brother.

“Then you’ll really go crazy,” Kelly declared.

“We love it,” Alicia said, giving Gabe a warm smile. “Don’t we, honey?”

“Absolutely,” he said, getting to his feet. “Come over here and kiss me.”

“You two should be careful with the kisses, or you’ll end up with another set of twins,” Jared joked.

Alicia gave Jared a smirking smile. “You and Kelly are all over each other, too, so don’t even start, Jared. I still can’t believe she ended up with the guy who used to throw spit wads at her in second grade.”

Jared grinned. “Will I never live that down? Gabe, you’re lucky you didn’t grow up around here. Some people have a long memory.”

“I’ve already forgiven you for that,” Kelly said with a smile. “Just don’t teach our son that trick.”

“I can’t promise anything,” Jared said. “Let’s get something to drink. Do you two need anything?”

  “I’m good,” Alicia said.

“And I’ve got everything I need,” Gabe said, meeting his wife’s eyes. “More than I ever imagined. I have the perfect family.”

Alicia kissed his lips. “And I have the perfect family man.”
