“Uhuh.” Adam reached out, grabbed hold of the front of her shirt and pulled her toward him. “Do you know what day it is?”
Answering Thursday was not going to be correct, and Lynn resisted the temptation. She’d been out all day and finding Adam dressed like Pete the Plumber, and their baby whisked away to the Williams’ Homestead by his grandparents, told her she’d forgotten something.
Lynn frowned. “I have no idea, sorry.”
“The day we met.”
Lynn mentally calculated the days since she’d moved here. So much had happened. Meeting Adam, getting married, having a baby. “Really?”
“Yeah. And I thought we should celebrate.” He began to undo her buttons.
“Here?” Lynn looked around the kitchen. It was empty, but people were always just dropping by to say hello. She didn’t want any of their friends or neighbors to walk in on them—while Adam checked her pipes. A nervous giggle threatened to erupt and spoil the moment.
“Yes. Here.” He slapped a hand down on the solid oak kitchen table. “Right here.”
“What if someone walks in?” Lynn glanced down at the kitchen table with a dubious expression. “We could go upstairs.”
“We could, but we won’t.” The twinkle in Adam’s eye made her swallow down the rest of her argument as to why the kitchen table was not suitable for…whatever he had in mind.
Where had her sense of fun and adventure gone? Just because she was a well-respected member of the local community, and a wife and mother, it didn’t mean she couldn’t take a chance. Just as she had taken a chance when she moved here to Hawkins Ranch.
“Well, I guess if you insist.” Lynn captured the spirit of the occasion and pulled open the front of Adam’s coveralls, to reveal his bare, bronzed chest. “Are you naked under there?”
“Semi-naked.” Adam returned to the task of undoing the buttons of her shirt, while Lynn peeled the blue fabric off his hard-toned shoulders. She would never tire of looking at him. Or touching him, or kissing him.
Heat spread throughout her body, and a need to be naked, skin to skin with her husband took control of her senses. One shove and his coveralls and shorts pooled at his feet. “So, what’s the big surprise?” Lynn asked as they walked down to the bottom pasture.
“It’s more of a little surprise,” Adam admitted.
“I don’t understand?”
“There.” Adam leaned against the stock fence.
“You bought me an alpaca?”
Adam shrugged. “Yes, a girl once told me you can never have too many alpacas.”
“Thank you.” She kissed him and then climbed the fence to go and say hello. “Does this mean you’ve accepted my style of ranching?”
“Oh, I’m not saying that. But I’ve seen what diversifying can do. And I thought we could expand the herd.” Adam vaulted the fence and came to join her. “And they are kind of cute.”
Lynn reached out and stroked the sweet face of the young alpaca. “Adorable.”
“I can’t help it,” Adam said modestly.
“Not you.” Lynn nudged him in the ribs, but he caught hold of her and pulled her into his arms.
“I love you, Lynn Williams.”
“I love you too, Adam Williams.” They kissed, and her life flashed before her eyes, as if it was all leading up to this moment. Their lives were good, they completed each other. And as they kissed and laughed, she gave thanks to her Uncle Freddy, the man who had made this all possible.
