The Cain Deception

“Did you get him?” Lawson hopefully asked.
“Afraid not. We thought we had him but he somehow managed to escape,” Sanders responded.
“That’s too bad.”
“We’ll get him. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open and get a fix on him soon enough. He’s not going to be able to evade us for too long.”
“Well let’s hope you’re right.”
“Any change there?” Sanders asked.
“No. Still the same.”
“Well I’m going to go home for the night. If anything changes you know where to reach me.”
“I will,” Lawson replied.
Lawson hung up and looked over at Cain, who already knew what she was going to say.
“Didn’t get him, huh?” Cain asked.
“No. How did you know that was gonna happen?”
“Just a hunch.”
“Some hunch.”
The doctor then entered the room and walked over to Cain, sitting down next to him. The somber look on his face told Cain not to expect good news. The anxiety was almost too much for him as he waited for the doctor to tell him about her condition. As many times as Cain had come close to death and stared it in the face, nothing was as bad as this. The feeling he had now was a hundred times worse than if he’d been in the situation himself.
“So we were able to get the bullet out,” the doctor began. “Unfortunately the damage we found inside her was a little worse than what we originally expected.”
“Which means what?” Cain wearily asked.
“Her condition is deteriorating. I’m sorry but there is no easy way to say this.”
“Say what?”
“At the rate she’s going now we don’t expect her to last much longer than another hour or two,” the doctor sorrowfully added.
Cain opened his mouth to respond but couldn’t formulate the words in his mind. He looked away, first at the wall and then the floor. He forcefully closed his eyes and sighed, tears starting to flow. Lawson came over to him and put her arm around him. Cain was able to compose himself after a minute.
“Can I see her?” Cain asked.
“Of course. Just give us a minute and I’ll have someone come out to bring you in.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m sorry, Matt,” Lawson expressed. “I wish there was more we could do. I wish I had gotten there sooner.”
“You did everything you could. If you didn’t get there when you did she probably would’ve already been gone by the time I got there.”
“I just wish there’s something else that could be done.”
“There is,” Cain stated.
“What?”
“We can find the person who’s responsible for this.”
“We’re looking. We’ll find him,” Lawson said.
“No. I’m not talking about Kurylenko,” Cain told her.
“What are you talking about?”
“This goes beyond Kurylenko. He’s just a pawn in this. Someone set this up and got him to do the dirty work and I’m gonna find out who.”
“How do you know there’s someone else?” Lawson asked.
“I can’t tell you yet.”
“You have information that you’re not sharing?”
“It’s something I have to keep to myself for a while. I’ll let you know when it’s time,” Cain said.
“Well what can you tell me?” Lawson wondered.
“Just that there’s someone above Kurylenko. I don’t have proof of anything yet. But when I get it…that person’s as good as dead.”
“Matt, you need to let me help you. Don’t shut me out.”
“I’ll let you know when I put two bullets in his head. I’m not gonna concentrate on that until this is over.”
A nurse came over and led Cain into Heather’s room. He was visibly shaken upon seeing her lying there, unconscious, hooked up to various machines. He slowly walked over to her and kissed her on the forehead. Cain sat down next to her and held her hand as he softly talked to her.
“I’m sorry for everything. This is all my fault. If we meet up again in another life, I hope you’ll be able to forgive me,” he told her. “Until then though, I will find out who’s responsible for this and I will even the score. Your death will not go unpunished. I promise you that.”
