  PROLOGUE

She found herself wandering. Lost, and she couldn’t tell where she was. She heard yapping. It sounded like dogs, but where were they?

Turning all around, she seemed to know the land but she felt like she’d never been here before.

The sound of yapping got louder as it echoed all around her. Coyotes? She halted as her body shook.

It sounded like a whole pack of them. Were they after her?

Then she saw them. They were coyotes, at least five of them. They started running toward her and smoke filled the air as if charged by them. The smoke rose up at her and then grew like a rolling wall of grey black.

Turning, she ran for her life... The pack of feral animals, hot on her heels.

Breathing fast, her fear knew no bounds as she tripped and fell.

Just as the pack got to her, they halted.

There on the other side of her sat a wolf.

He didn’t look threatening...he just sat there. He then walked around her and headed for the coyotes.

She then heard yelps and growls like they were all fighting, but not looking back, she got up and stumbled forward.

Then suddenly, the smoke cleared and she saw an old adobe house in front of her. She wondered if she would be safe there. She went up to the door and yanked it open, not even knocking in her haste.

Just when she stepped into the darkened house, the room lit up bright. Too bright, as she had to use her hand to shield her eyes.

Suddenly, she heard a woman screaming and a man yelling.

She took a few steps into the room and she could finally see through the blinding light. She couldn’t seem to control her own feet as she stepped forward, knowing it was toward some horror that she did not want to witness. She didn’t want to go in there. She felt like she would do anything to NOT go in there. But her body wasn’t her own. She moved inside to the next room.

A child was crying loudly, screaming really. A small girl with dark skin like hers. She had doe like eyes and long dark hair. Tears rolled down her sweet round cheeks.

She paused. Was it her? Was this a memory? Or was this the nightmare?

A large man was moving in front of her as he picked the crying child up and yelled at her then tossed her hard into a wall.

Anyone close could hear her bones snap as the child fell into a broken heap and cried no more. The room grew silent.

All she could hear was his rapid crazy breathing as if he were a crazed animal. Fear pulsed through her as tears rolled down her face. Who was the child and why did he just kill her?

Then a woman a came into view... Crying and screaming at the killer. She jumped up on his back and began pounding on him with her small fists.

The monster of a man growled and tossed her off like a rag doll.

The woman fell to the floor. It didn’t stop her as she wept and tried to crawl to the broken child on the floor.

The monster man shouted at her.

But to her, the witness of this horror show, it sounded just like the coyote yelps and screams. He wasn’t speaking real words.

She stilled and watched helplessly as the huge man grabbed the crying woman from the ground and slammed her against the wall. He then began to beat her. His fists bloody, his rage increasing. He didn’t stop hitting her. He just kept pounding as bones broke with sickening cracks and pops and blood flew everywhere.

Kalinda finally found her courage... she finally found her voice as she screamed at him, “Stop!” Stop it! You are killing her!”

The man finally stopped. Then he turned his blood splattered face to her. His eyes glowed red...red like the blood on his face as it dripped to the floor in sickening splats.

Again, coyotes howled from all around as the room dimmed.

Someone grabbed Kalinda up and took her to the door. Suddenly, she realized she was tiny, small like a child. Not a woman grown as she was today.

The person who grabbed her, took her out into the night and now, the starlit sky loomed above her.

All she knew was terror, blood and the screams of the woman and child would not leave her head.

“Be safe, child. Nieodmienny dałaá Ndee,” the man who carried her small form in his arms spoke.

She wondered what it meant. She knew the language but couldn’t place it. Then the smoke, blood and the man all disappeared as she was set down on the hard ground.

She couldn’t smell the blood or the smoke anymore. But there was a scent... cinnamon? No... something else. She pondered at this strange scent in the middle of her nightmare.

  Cloves?

Then she heard the loud growls and yaps again.

  The coyotes!

They wanted to rip her to shreds.

Trembling all over with fear again, she tried to run. This time her legs wouldn’t move.

The animals appeared around her. Saliva dripping from their jowls as they all started that yapping again. It became so loud that it drowned out all other sounds....

Gasping, Kalinda sat up in bed... She couldn’t catch her breath. Tears rolled down her cheeks as sweat rolled down her neck.

The nightmare. It was the nightmare.

  Chapter One

Jack was lying in bed, just waking up. He reached out for his woman, Kalinda but all he got was cold air. His eyes snapped open and he realized he was alone. Not knowing what was going on, he leaned up on his elbow and looked around the room.

Kalinda had been suffering from nightmares the whole time they had been together and rather than disturb his sleep, she often got up and went to sit in a chair when she woke up from them. He looked over to the chair they had in the room but she wasn’t there.

Pushing the covers off, he got up and walked out to the living room but she wasn’t there either. The sun was up just enough to see shadows but not enough to see the room clearly. Jack turned and walked to their daughter’s room.

But again, Kalinda wasn’t there. Rosa was laying in her crib sound asleep.

Now Jack was getting worried, he turned toward the living room, went to the patio doors, and looked outside at the backyard. She was there sitting on the patio wrapped up in a blanket watching the sun rise.

He opened the door quietly and walked out to join her. The early morning air was cool. He got goosebumps on his chest and legs but it wasn’t that cold. She didn’t startle when he sat down beside her but she kept her eyes on the sky.

She knew he’d come looking for her, he always did when she was upset.

“Another bad dream?” Jack’s voice was low as if he didn’t was to break the silence surrounding them.

Kalinda nodded, then she opened the blanket and Jack wrapped it around both of them. When he pulled her into his arms, he frowned at how cold her skin was. Pulling her onto his lap, he wrapped his warmth around her and she snuggled into him.

Jack knew if he turned his head to the right, he could see the main club house from their patio. It had been six months since his family and his father’s men had taken back the club along with the help of the Soldiers of Hades. Which some of them had stuck around. Their leader Cobra wanted the chance to get to know his daughter, his brother Creed’s woman, Lola.

When the dust cleared from that, they had settled here, just outside of Killeen, Tex
as. At first, the people of the town were leery of them, after being associated with Bandit and his group of outlaws, they were worried about the new MC -The Lost Sons. Most still remembered The Lost Sinners under Tate Young’s command but they also remembered the trouble Creed got himself into and the reason he went to prison all those years ago.

When the truth of his set up had come out and the dirty cops that sent him to prison were revealed. people were almost glad of the Young family’s return. Things around here and around town were settling down and the Young family were setting down roots again.

Silas had asked the boys to stay and they had agreed to stay. Now they all were building their own homes on the club property. Jack and Kalinda’s house was the first one done and they had moved into it about a month ago.

It was coming on winter in Texas now and while they didn’t often have the bitter cold of the northern states, their seasons did change some.

When Jack felt the first tear on his chest, he grew concerned. “Babe, what’s wrong?”

Kalinda shook her head but didn’t say anything.

“Please talk to me?” Jack begged of her. “I can’t help you if I don’t know what the problem is,” he whispered in her ear.

Kalinda turned her wet eyes to him. “That’s just it, Jack. I don’t know what the problem is. I’ve told you about my dreams and how they are all jumbled up into one big mess. I see people yelling and screaming but I can’t hear their words. It’s like they’re talking in a language I don’t know. I see a man hitting a woman and I know them both but I just can’t remember who they are, what they mean to me, if anything. This time though...” she paused. “There were strange animals in the dream. I never dreamed them before.”

  “Animals?” Jack asked looking confused.

Kalinda nodded. “They scared me more than the horrific scene I saw this time. Then a wolf?” She blinked. “Maybe... It was just something I watched on TV or...” She sighed. “It all didn’t make a lot of sense. I’m afraid but I don’t remember what I’m afraid of or who.” She was almost sobbing by the time she finished telling him about her nightmare.

Jack knew her past had been bothering her a great deal. It always did around this time of year. She had confessed to him that she didn’t know that much about what had happened to her as a child. She knew she was Native American but she never knew which tribe she belonged to, as she had grown up in an orphanage near Austin.
