“Still coming over for dinner tonight?” I asked. I figured if she said no then there was definitely something going on with her.

“Of course,” she said and smiled. I felt relief wash over me. I was just being paranoid for nothing. Poor Reagan was just as overworked as everyone else in the office at the moment. We were all feeling the pressure.

After work, I made my way to the shop to get ingredients and then got home just before Reagan arrived. I’d told her that she wasn’t allowed to work late and that I was expecting her by seven. True to word, at exactly seven on the dot, the doorbell rang.

I opened the door and grinned at her.

  “You’re on time.”

“Of course. Although, I didn’t get a chance to go home and change. I’m so sorry. I had all these great intentions of doing so, but then work caught up with me.”

I smiled at her. “You honestly don’t need to worry about that. You look beautiful.”

“Wow, thank you. You’re in a good mood.”

“I’ll be honest, Reagan. I’m just happy to see you,” I said, and I pulled her toward me and kissed her. Her lips parted slightly as they met mine, and I relished the sweet taste of her mouth with an aching sigh. My grip tightened instinctively around the small of her back, pulling her body as close to mine as it could get, craving her warmth. I had to physically pull away after a few moments because I could feel myself losing control all over.

“Dammit, I’ve wanted to do that all week,” I said to her.

  “Really? Even at work?”

I raised my eyebrows. “Are you kidding me? Especially at work. You have made my working days a lot more difficult, you know.”

“I’m glad to hear it,” she said and laughed. “So, do my eyes deceive me or are you really making me dinner?”

“I’m making you dinner. I might not be the most incredible chef in the world, but I do know my way around a good chicken korma. Also, I know you feel about eating dinner from other restaurants, so I figured at least this way you can stay true to Dana.”

She looked at me in a way that I hadn’t seen before. I wasn’t exactly sure what it was, but I could see that I had said the right thing. “You’re a very good man,” she said. “And pretty different from what I thought you’d be like.”

I poured her a glass of wine and handed it to her.

“Come sit with me in the kitchen while I get the food ready. It won’t take too long,” I said. Then, while I started chopping the onions, I asked. “So, I’m different from what you thought I’d be like? That’s interesting. What exactly did you think I would be like when you first came to work with me?”

“Don’t get me wrong, Josh, you’re very charismatic. And you have a way about you that’s hard not to like. I always liked what you stand for, and I always appreciated your honesty. But you also came across like . . . .”

  “Like what?”

She giggled. “Like a bit of a dick, if we’re being honest.”

“Don’t hold back your true thoughts,” I said and chuckled.

“Sorry, but you asked me! Anyway, you’re not at all like that. You’re actually one of the nicest guys I know, and very easy to talk to. I thought you’d be the type that only barked out orders and never listened.”

“Oh, I only listen to people that I find extremely attractive. So, does that mean you don’t find me cocky anymore?”

  “Nah, you’re still cocky.”

“Don’t forget that I’m the one making your dinner tonight. I was also thinking of making some chocolate brownies for dessert, but it all depends on what you think of me.”

“It’s funny you say that,” she said. “I was just thinking how much you’ve changed. In fact, I think you’re the sweetest, nicest . . .”

  “Hottest?”

“Hottest man. You’re perfect really. Absolute perfection.”

I chuckled. “Ah, the things you’ll say for a chocolate brownie. If only I had known that at the start.”

“Thanks for cooking, Josh. It sure beats a night of working.”

I smiled. “I’ve been looking forward to this all week.”

  “You have?”

“Oh, I definitely have. For the past few months, all I have thought about and spoken about is work. And while I do love my work, I need to stop thinking about it for a little while. In fact, I think that tonight we should make a rule that we’re not allowed to speak about work matters except at work.”

“Oh, that’s going to be very hard for people like you and me.”

“Yeah, but I think we’re also the type that enjoys a challenge, don’t you think?” I said.

She grinned. “Oh, you know me too well. Okay then, if we’re not going to talk about work, what are we going to talk about?”

“Hmm, let’s see. I want to know more about you,” I said. I still got the feeling that there were things about her life that she wasn’t telling me. Then again, there were things that I hadn’t told her either, so I couldn’t really push too much. We didn’t really know each other even though sometimes it felt like we’d known each other forever.

“What do you want to know?” she asked.

“What’s your favorite movie? Your favorite book and your favorite holiday?” I decided to keep it light.

She chuckled and took a sip of her wine while she pondered the question. I thought then how nice it was to have her in my house on a Friday evening over a glass of wine. I’d endured far too many lonely nights lately. I actually hadn’t realized how lonely I was until then.

“Let’s see. Favorite move is easy. It has to be Pretty Woman.”

“What? Seriously? I must say, that’s not what I expected you to say,” I said.

She laughed. “Yeah, it doesn’t seem very me, does it? But there’s just something about it. Maybe I just watched it at a very good time in my life or something. It has good connotations for me. And, there’s just something so simplistic about the whole thing. Girl is in a rough place in her life, girl meets handsome boy, girl falls in love, life gets better for both of them. Simple. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Richard Gere is in it.”

“Ah, so does that mean you’re still going to like me when I go gray?” I teased, but the idea of us still being in each other’s lives when we were old and gray was very appealing.

She smiled. “If you’re going to look like Richard Gere, then absolutely. Now, favorite book? That one is a bit more difficult for me. I’m a Stephen King fan, which I know is the complete opposite of Pretty Woman, but I just love his stories. But my favorite book has to be Anne of Green Gables. Again, there’s something about that simplistic life that appeals to me.”

“Stephen King, Anne of Green Gables, and Pretty Woman. You know, those don’t follow a pattern at all. That’s quite some diversity, if you ask me. You’re a very complex woman, Reagan,” I said. “Which I happen to find very appealing. Top up?” I asked and held up the bottle of wine.

“Yes please,” she said and held out her glass. I saw that her cheeks were now pink from the first glass, and as she shrugged off her coat, I felt happy. It was nice to see her looking so relaxed, especially when things had been so busy at work. “Oh, what was the last question?” she asked.

  “Favorite holiday.”

  “New Year’s Day for sure.”

  “Not New Year’s Eve?”

“No, I’ve never really enjoyed that too much. It’s always a bit of a disappointment. But New Year’s Day is different. It feels like the world resets itself. Even though it’s just another day in the year, it somehow feels completely different. It makes me feel like anything is possible. As if you get another chance to right any wrongs. I love it.”

I smiled. Reagan was by far the most interesting person that I had ever met in my life.

“This is nice,” I said to her. “Getting to know each other like this.”

“Yeah,” she said. “And you look very cute in the kitchen.”

“I was considering cooking in the nude, with just an
apron on, but I didn’t trust myself enough in the kitchen for that. Hot oil, sharp knives, and naked bodies don’t really go too well.”

“Oh, that’s a pity,” she said. “I would’ve loved to have seen you walk around with just an apron on. I couldn’t think of anything better. How’s the cooking going, by the way? Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Actually, I’m almost done. Now it’s a case of waiting for it all to simmer. Which generally takes about forty minutes. I hope you don’t mind. But the longer it simmers, the better it tastes.”

“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said and grinned at me.

“What’s that smile for?” I said.

  “Well, I was thinking . . . .”

  “Yeah?”

“I know something that we can do while we wait for the food to cook. Forty minutes is plenty time.”

I turned the stove down, put my glass of wine down, and walked straight up to Reagan.

  Reagan

The wine and the conversation had warmed me up, and I was having the best evening with Josh. I could see that he was at the end of the cooking process, and I couldn’t help but ask if he wanted to kill some time while the food cooked. It wasn’t like me to be so forward, but I had no control when I was with Josh. And ever since I’d arrived I’d been desperate for more of him. He’d kissed me at the start of the night, but we’d forced ourselves to pull away. But I couldn’t take it anymore. I chuckled as he put his glass of wine down and walked straight over to me. I could see from the look in his eyes that he wanted me too.

“I’ve got an idea too,” he said.

I chuckled. “Oh yeah, what’s that?”

I gasped as he slid his hand up my shirt and leaned in to suck my neck. He pulled away and smiled at me.

“How about we give the bed a try this time?”

“From the sofa, to the desk, to the bed? Yeah, that sounds about as unconventional as we’ve been so far,” I said.

“Come on, then,” he took my hand, and we walked to his bedroom. We weren’t in there for more than a few seconds and we were already in each other’s arms. He held onto me and kissed me with so much passion I thought I was going to faint. I pulled away.

“I need to get on that bed before I fall over. Josh, you’re the most amazing kisser in the world,” I said.

He smiled. “Finally, she says something nice about me.”

“What? I said you were perfect earlier.”

  “That’s when you wanted brownies.”

“I still want brownies,” I said.

He laughed. “I don’t care what you want. I want you.”

We both wanted each other so badly that we didn’t seem to bother too much with the foreplay. Instead, he took off his clothes, and I took off mine, and we both fell to the bed.

“How are you this beautiful?” he said as he pulled me up on top of him.

I moved down and put him inside my mouth, sucking him until he was hard and ready for me. I worked my mouth up and down, swirling my tongue around his shaft while I sucked him. I waited until he was just about to come before pulling away. I climbed off the bed, and he groaned and told me to come back.

“Condom?” I asked. I was proud of myself for even remembering.

“First drawer,” he said and pointed to the bedside table. He looked desperate for me to get back, so I rushed over, grabbed a condom, and took it out the wrapper. I put it on him and slowly sat back on top of him. I was wet from excitement, and he slid easily inside me. I was my turn to groan.

I leaned down over him and sucked gently on his neck as I rocked. He had his hand on my waist as if he didn’t want to let me go. It scared me a little, this feeling that I had when I was with him. This didn’t just feel like sex. Usually, with sex, I could detach myself from the person that I was doing it with. It was about the act and not about the emotions. But this was different, and as I rocked over him, and felt him hard inside me, I felt myself lose control all over again. Suddenly he held on tighter and flipped me over so that he was now the one on top. He stayed inside me and smiled down at me. I wrapped my legs around him and pulled him in closer, and as he began to thrust, I knew I was going to come within seconds. I closed my eyes, bit my lip, and allowed the ecstasy to take over me.

“You are beautiful, Reagan. Just beautiful.”

I smiled. “Ah, usually men say these things before they get the women into bed, not after.”

“Well, I’m not like most men.”

  “You certainly are not.”

“And anyway, I’m doing that so that we can do it all over again later.”

“Ah, I see, forward thinking. I like it.”

He pulled me in and kissed me on the forehead. We stayed like that for a while, neither of us saying anything. The blanket was over us, and with the warmth of his body next to me, I found myself slowly drifting off.

I’m not sure what made me wake up, but when I did it was with a start.

  “Josh! Wake up.”

Josh opened his eyes and looked around in a panic.

  “What? What’s going on?”

I started laughing. “We fell asleep. The food.”

“Oh no!” he said and jumped out. I chuckled as I heard him running to the kitchen.

He came back running with a grin on his face, and the sight of his naked body standing at the doorway made me get excited all over again.

“All fine! Thankfully I had it on a very low heat. We were probably five minutes away from it burning, though. So you saved us.”

“Thank goodness. I’m starving,” I said and climbed out of bed. I looked around for my clothes, which were scattered all around the room, and groaned. “I really should’ve gone home first to get changed. The last thing I want is to get into my work clothes again.”

Josh threw me one of his t-shirts. “Here, wear this.”

  “Your t-shirt?”

“Sure, why not? It’s just you and I here. Plus, I think you’ll look better than me in it.”

I put on my underwear and then pulled the t-shirt over my head. It was far too big for me and looked more like a loose dress. I chuckled as I looked in the mirror.

  “Fits me perfectly,” I said.

Josh grinned. “I knew it would better on you. Come on, let’s go downstairs and have dinner. If I stand here any longer, I’m just going to pull you back into bed again.”

“If I wasn’t so hungry, I’d let you do it,” I said.

We made our way downstairs to the kitchen and sat down to eat. After our session in bed, we were both ravenous, and the food was delicious.

“I can’t believe how good this is. Not to insult you or anything, but I didn’t think it would be as good as it is.”

“I think you’re just hungry. But I’ll take the compliment.”

“So, what’s the lowdown on brownie situation? You promised me some when we finished the food, but I have not seen you make them yet.”

He laughed. “I never go back on my promises. However, I’ll have you know that I have no idea how to bake. I’ve never made brownies before in my life.”

“So you lied!” I exclaimed in mock horror.

“Well, a little. But a promise is a promise. I might not know how to make brownies, but I do know how to buy them from the shop and heat them up. And trust me, they’re better heated.”

  I laughed. “You’re a genius.”

“So you accept my store-bought brownies?”

“Throw in a cup of coffee, and I’m good. In fact, I’ll even reward you later.”

“Oh yeah? Wow, this is a great deal.”

We spent the next two hours eating, laughing, and talking about everything under the sun, anything except work. It was nice to see such a fun side to Josh, and he really was nothing like the man that I had watched on TV. Sure, he was cocky, but it was all in good fun. After a busy month together, it was easy to say that this was the best night we’d had in a long time. I felt more relaxed and happier th
an ever before.

High on sugar and happiness, we ended the night off back in bed. This time, we made love slowly and passionately. We took the time to savor each other’s bodies and got to know every single element of each other on a more personal level. I almost fell asleep again afterward, but remembered just in time that I should probably go home. I was just about to get out of bed and get changed when Josh took my arm and stopped me.

“I think I should go,” I said. “I had the best night, Josh. This is just what I needed.”

He smiled. “You know, you really don’t have to go. It’s Saturday tomorrow, and I don’t have anywhere that I need to be. And it’s late, and I don’t like the thought of you driving back now. You’re already in bed with me. Sleep over, and if you’re lucky, you might even get brownies for breakfast.”

I grinned at him. I knew that I probably shouldn’t stay over. I was starting to have real feelings for this guy. But he was still my boss, and there was still the thought of his mother lingering in my mind. He had no idea that I had hired a private investigator to dig up information on him. I’d left it so long now, and gotten too close to him. I was sure that if he were to find out, he would hate me for it. I didn’t know what to do. But when I looked down at his smiling face, I couldn’t help but push all those thoughts aside. The thought of spending an entire night and the whole next morning with him was way too appealing to ignore.

“Well, I don’t actually have any food in my kitchen at home. And brownies do sound very appealing to me.”

“So you’re only staying for the food?” he said.

I chuckled and crawled back under the comforter with him.

“Oh yes,” I said. “Only for the food.”
