Liar: Karma Inc. Case 3 Page 10

by Gillian Zane

It took me forever to initial here and fill in my personal information there. I had to put in as much information about Pete’s parents as I could remember. I had to certify that I wasn’t the next of kin. I had to verify this, and extrapolate something else, until all i’s had been dotted. When I was done, I let out a big sigh and piled the last form on top of the stack.

I stood from the desk and the deputy shook my hand.

“Real sorry for your loss, ma’am.”

“Thanks,” I said because there wasn't much else I could say.

The phone rang on the desk and we both looked over at it. The receptionist picked up her extension primly and spoke into it with calm assurance.

  “Sheriff’s office.”

The deputy and I both stared at her, so we didn’t miss that she had gone pale. She turned to us; well, really, she turned to the deputy.

“There’s been a shooting. At the motel.”

  Everything went black.

  I knew.

  I knew it was him.

Drake. I had to go to him. Desperately needed to see him.

Blackness washed over my vision, but in a matter of seconds it was burned away by a severe light. I blinked away tears and panic. Where was I? I wasn’t inside. The brightness was the sky, the sun. I blinked again, shielding my eyes from the sun which was burning a hole through my head.

I glanced around and saw a large fluorescent sign. I was at a motel. I was there. Someone was yelling. I looked around in a panic. Where was he?

That’s when I saw the shape. The dark shape on the ground. There was someone leaning over him. They kept bending over him. Pushing on him. Were they hurting him? I ran to him. I twisted my ankle, but that didn’t matter. I crashed onto my knees next to him. Pushing the person who was leaning over him away.

“Where did you come from?” the man I pushed away asked. He moved back to the shape’s side. He was trying to save him, but one look at him, this beautiful man, and I knew there was nothing CPR could do for him. There were two bleeding wounds in his chest. His eyes fluttered. Was he still alive? It couldn’t be. There was no life left. I couldn’t see his aura, but I knew what was there was no more.

“Drake,” I cried. His eyes fluttered slightly. Blood pooled on his chest, some trickled from his mouth. I placed a shaky hand on his chest, my hand slipped in the blood. There was nothing there. Nothing.

  Drake was dead.

There was nothing that could be done.

  Death won. Again.
