“Dragon speed, children.”
Slivver and Elween bowed. “Dragon speed, oh king.”
CHAPTER 75 (Epilogue)
Quintuklen - The City of Crowns
Hacksaw lay on a stone slab inside an infirmary. A royal blue towel covered his waist. The deep-chested man’s upper body was covered in hair and scars that had been sewn up. On both sides of him, two legionnaires cleaned and dressed his wounds. Like Hacksaw, they were older, with gray-white beards neatly trimmed. One of them was missing his left eye. The other walked with a limp.
“Hacksaw always had a knack for surviving,” the one-eyed knight said. “But I do not think he will survive this. His sleep is deep, his breathing shallow.” He put an ear to Hacksaw’s chest. “His innards gurgle as if something still leaks inside there.”
“No potion or salve can save a man on the brink. His time has come,” the knight with the bad limp said. Though old, he was the younger of the two with some black still showing in his beard. “Every knight’s time comes.”
“True, but this knight rode the thunder. And he carries the unicorn’s horn.”
“The pipe? I don’t believe that’s unicorn horn. None have ever seen a unicorn.”
“None of us, that is.” The one-eyed knight rubbed some salve into the stitches. Hacksaw had over twenty entry and exit wounds in his body. “How else do you explain that he arrived here from wherever he was? He appeared, out of nowhere, in the legionnaires’ hall, spilling his own blood on the marble. That’s the unicorn’s power. There is no other explanation.”
“Well, I don’t know about things that I haven’t seen for myself. Believing is seeing.”
“I saw it. I stood there the moment he arrived. Feathered shafts filled him.”
“Who do you suppose shot him?”
The oldest knight looked down on Hacksaw’s pale face. “Only he can answer that.”
