They’d become self-sufficient, she and Caleb and their brood.
“Dad’s waving to us,” Nathan said.
Alanna turned and saw Caleb striding toward them. He wore his keeper’s blue uniform, its brass buttons shining in the sunlight. In his arms he held their daughter, eight-month-old Casey. Their six-year-old Kevin and four-year-old Aaron trotted beside him.
She smiled. Each time she looked at him her breath caught in her throat. He still had the power to make her knees weak.
“Alanna, the photographer is ready.” Caleb caught Kevin’s hand as he reached for a handful of sand. “We better hurry. I don’t know how much longer this crew is going to stay clean.”
She laughed, accepting Casey as the babe leaned toward her. The child grinned, revealing her four new teeth. “Then let us get going, Mr. Pitt.”
The boys ran ahead toward the row of chairs the photographer had lined in front of the cottage.
Alanna and Caleb hung back. He wrapped his arm around her waist and hugged her close. “I’m not sure if I said it yet today, but I love you, Mrs. Pitt.”
She savored his warmth, his love, his touch. Already she thought ahead to tonight when the children would be put to bed and they’d be alone. “And I love you, Mr. Pitt.”
