“You’re getting pretty good at this.” He smirked
“It’s not funny. I destroyed your home!”
He got in the bed and wrapped his arms around me.
“We couldn’t live there anyway. It was already compromised. Cade’s been telling me to move into our facility under the club for a while now. I have a large apartment there. Losing the house isn’t what hurts the most. This is.”
He brought a hand to my hair, pulling it over my shoulder. I gasped at the shorter length.
“The flames singed your hair. Onyx came by while you slept and cut it.
A single tear ran down my cheek. Then the dam burst and I was in his arms. I don’t know if it was the emotional rollercoaster of my pregnancy or his loss. Maybe it was a delayed reaction to the terror I had felt just hours before. But I really knew. Deep down I knew that my biggest fear was losing him. I loved him more than my own life. It was fast and crazy, this emotion I had but it was real. He must sensed my emotions because he pulled back, gazing into my eyes, reassuring himself of my feelings. Then he held me tighter.
Three days had changed my life completely. One night had rearranged my life…forever.
Epilogue
Ten months later…
I pulled back and gazed at him, running my fingers through his soft hair. Bright amber eyes looked back at me. Sitting on the large porch of our weekend home, I looked out at the forest with its colorful foliage. Autumn was a beautiful time in upstate New York. The air was crisp and smelled of fallen leaves. It was unusually warm today. I smiled knowing exactly why. This world had its advantages. A long howl broke the silence and a flock of birds burst from one of the tallest trees.
“There comes daddy.” I whispered in my son’s tiny ear. Logan stared back at me and made some excited sounds. So young and he already loved his father unconditionally. I glance up and Jax was there. He came to us still in wolf form, wanting Logan to grow accustomed. Amber eyes regarded me intently and I sank my hands into silky black fur. He sniffed at his son, tickling his toes. Logan giggled, loving the sensation. The wolf moved behind my chair then I felt two strong hands at my shoulders, reminding me of that first night at his club. He leaned down and whispered in my ear.
“Logan’s asleep. Let’s head inside for some mommy daddy time.”
His hands ran down my long hair. It was almost to my waist, and I wouldn’t cut it for all the gold in the world. Looking over my shoulder, I smiled.
“I would love that.”
“And I love you,” he whispered.
