Dodging my question amps my stubborn meter. “That’s not an answer.” I hold up the matchbook and raise my eyebrows.

He expels a disbelieving laugh, then bows slightly. “I knew you’d make a great strategist. I’m Michael.”

His name echoes in my ears, resounding and larger-than-life. As I wince against the thunderous sound of his real voice, realization curls my stomach inward. I can’t believe I threatened the Archangel responsible for kicking Lucifer out of heaven with a book of matches. I drop the puny weapon and blink at him, unsure what to say.

“Are you going to listen to me now?” he asks, golden eyes studying me with a mixture of pride and amusement.

All I can do is bob my head.

“Don’t discount your work, Inara. Go back upstairs and study it, then destroy it.”

As what he says sinks in, I realize Michael would know if Fate was telling the truth. “Is Ethan the Master Corvus?”

Michael’s mouth sets in a hard line. “I want to kill Fate myself for meddling.”

“Is he?” I ask, my hands shaking. “Why did Fate tell me?”

“Yes, Ethan is,” he says on a sigh. “Fate told you because he’s scared. He sees the Master Corvus not knowing who he is as a very real threat to his existence.”

I’m quaking inside. The implications are huge. What does this mean for Ethan? “Why doesn’t Ethan’s Corvus know he’s the Master Corvus?”

Michael tilts his head. “You need to help him find his way, Inara. He’s lost sight of who he is and his true purpose.”

I shake my head. “I don’t understand. Who does his Corvus think he is?”

Michael offers up a half smile. “Just any other Corvus.”

“What happened? How could he not know his own identity?”

He shrugs. “Only he knows that truth. The Master Corvus may not have a fate, but you can take him down the path. Help him find out what happened, so he can find his way back to his destiny. Your world depends on him remembering who he is.”

“But if angels can’t even talk to the Master Corvus, what makes you think he’s going to listen to me?”

“Nara?” As soon as Ethan starts down the stairs, Michael fades right before my eyes.

Ethan walks into the kitchen, his gaze searching the room. “Were you just talking to somebody?”

“You could say that.” I walk past him and start up the stairs, my mind spinning.

He’s practically kicking at my heels, his deep voice right in my ear, vibrating with tension. “Who was it?”

I flip my hand over my shoulder. “Oh, just the highest ranking Archangel and fiercest warrior ever telling me I’m not doing my job right.”

As soon as we reach the top of the stairs, Ethan grips my hand and turns me around.

“Your job?” His deep blue gaze searches my face. “Are you an angel, Nara?”

Thank you for following Ethan and Nara’s journey!
