by Faleena Hopkins

My eyes widen. “Is he okay?”

Wyatt nods, “Got his shoulder. He spun out. Crashed. Not fatal. Pretty exciting stuff.” Sitting back, Wyatt focuses on the classic as I stare at his profile.

  Exciting?

  It could have been him.

Shuddering, I face the screen and let the story’s charm sweep reality and worry away from me.

Wyatt and I are walking May back, her arm through his, our steps slow. “Wyatt did you know that I see a lot of my Jerald in you?”

“Really, Grams? I’ll take that as a compliment.”

  “Your looks.”

  He laughs, “Not my personality?”

  “Some.”

I laugh this time, and Wyatt feigns being insulted. “I hate to ask you which parts.”

  “You walk like he did.”

  “Isn’t that still my looks?”

“No, that walk comes from the inside.” Wyatt and I exchange a glance, because she means both men didn’t lack in confidence. I almost say something snarky but I don’t want to cut her off as she continues, “He walked like he owned the world, and he had the same sparkle in his eyes that you have. That also comes from inside.”

“I’m guessing Caden resembles Great-Grandpa Jerald, too?”

  May nods, “Yes, very much.”

Wyatt explains to me, “I look more like my cousin Caden than I do my own brothers.”

“It’s true!” She pats his arm, resting her hand on it so that both hold onto him now.

“Do you like living here, Grams?”

  “Very much.”

  “Why?”

“I get to be around people my own age. Diana plans activities for us. The food is made by someone else, cleaned by someone else. It’s like being on a cruise on land.”

He makes an approving face. “Can’t see anything wrong with that.”

I open the door to her room as she tells him, “I was the one who told Michael to find me a nice home. Nancy said it wouldn’t be a burden to have me stay with them, but I would’ve been bored.”

Wyatt laughs louder than that statement should warrant. We both look at him for a reason. “He said the same thing — retirement bores him. He’s having fun with the ducks now though.”

She smiles, walking to her bed. “He loves those ducks.”

My eyebrows wrinkle as neither offers a better story for me to understand. “Ducks?”

“Didn’t I tell you?” asks Wyatt.

  “No.”

“I brought those ducklings to my grandparent’s house,” he casually explains as I stare in wonder and shock. “They fixed this fountain they have in the backyard that’s been dry for years so they could raise them. Been a month now and they’re growing fast. Takes them up to sixty days to leave their momma, usually, so it’s still up in the air what they’re going to do with them when that time is up.”

May waits to take off her slippers, since she considers Wyatt special company. “Michael pretends as though they’re not important but I see the light in his eyes every time he takes me on a ride with their newest story.”

Wyatt glances to me, sees I’m astounded, and takes my hand. This is a first, outside of when we’re seated during a movie. As soon as they’ve ended, he’s attentive to his Grams and more polite.

She notices the public show of affection, blue eyes crinkling. “Will you be here next Friday, too, Wyatt?”

He turns to go, tugging me with him. “Yep.”

  Simple.

  To the point.

  No hesitation.

  It doesn’t escape her.

  Or me.

“Night Grams,” he says. Pausing, he runs over to kiss her cheek. “Sweet dreams.”

As he heads back to me, her eyes go distant and she takes off her slippers. “Goodnight, Jerald. You make me so happy.”

Wyatt locks eyes with me, and turns around, but she’s not looking this way. I silently wave him over and he tiptoes to me, shutting the door and not waking her from the past.

  Chapter 30

  Diana

“Nice office.” Wyatt picks up a photo of me from my desk, showing it to me. “Who’s this?”

  “Jon, a friend from college.”

“You guys are having fun,” Wyatt chuckles.

“It was a drag queen contest, and I dressed up with him. Some of the people thought I might have been a man under all of that.”

He sets it down, walking to where I’m standing in the middle of the small room. Pulling me against his hard frame, Wyatt’s gaze is scorching hot, his grip on my lower back authority and possessiveness. “You feel like a woman to me.”

  And you feel all man.

I soften, sigh, and enjoy his embrace pulling me harder into him. To be looked at like this, so intensely, is a feeling I’ve longed for, though I never knew it was missing.

I’m keenly aware of Wyatt’s left hand sliding down the silky backside of my dress, over my ass and holding there as he leans for a kiss. I wait for it, tilt my head, our eyes still locked, eyelashes heavy, lips not yet touching.

His hand travels lower, slipping along the crease under my buttock, over the fabric, and making my pussy hum for him.

Wyatt brushes his smooth lips over mine, pulling away to lock eyes with me as his fingers slip further down. He gathers up the dress bit by bit until he’s got the hem in his fist, torturing me by taking his time. I try to kiss him, but he stays out of reach, eyes on fire.

His hand dips under, hem blousing over his arm as his fingers seek out and find my panties. I bought new lingerie for him, even though he hasn’t seen any of it yet.

  Wyatt is making us wait.

  No sex. Just kissing.

  He’s never touched me.

  Not down here.

  Is this the moment?

His fingers slide under my panties, just tracing the edges. I wouldn’t be surprised if he dropped the dress and went for the door.

But now he’s tracing over the front, where lacy trim draws a groan from his lips. I can see blue flakes in his irises, but it’s the gold that burns bright as Wyatt dips under and touches soft hair over my feminine mound for the first time.

  I close my eyes.

  Hoping for a kiss.

  It doesn’t come.

  But his fingers…

  Those calloused fingers…

  Drop lower.

  Sliding over my cleft.

  Into my pussy’s lips.

  With maddening patience.

I moan. And receive a kiss.

  The pressure soft.

His finger hovers over my clit.

  Then touches me.

  “You’re wet,” he rasps.

I lock eyes with him. “Duh.”

He chuckles, and the smile fades, replaced with hunger as his middle finger beings to stroke me, just a tiny bit of pressure, the calloused pad rough enough to set me on fire with need.

  My stomach tightens.

  Breath short.

He pauses, and slides a little bit lower to my wet opening.

“Please,” I whisper, and he stiffens.

  Everywhere.

  “Please what, Beautiful?”

  “Stop torturing me.”

“No can do.” His tongue lightly licks mine, dipping into my mouth for a second before retreating so he can watch my eyelashes drop.

My pussy is relaxed, open, wanting his cock. I know he’s huge. I’ve felt the size through his pants many bittersweet nights.

The middle finger is a tease, but I’ll take what I can get. He knows what he’s doing, and as it enters me an inch at a time, I become alive to Wyatt’s touch. He pushes in as deep as he can, then slowly pulls out, my pussy’s walls clenching around him, begging his finger not to leave me like this. He inches it back inside to its furthest depth, and our lips meet, both of us softly panting. I offer my tongue, and Wyatt sucks on it while his finger slides out and in, keeping a painfully slow pace until I whimper, “Please!”

  Our mouths mold, mov
ing on each other, seeking, as heat builds in my core, his index finger now joining in on the fun. Two of Wyatt’s fingers inside me.

“So tight,” he murmurs, licking my tongue while my eyes are closed. I am overwhelmed, near my breaking point, inner thighs pulsing and hot.

Wyatt slides out, his fingers using the dripping arousal to slip and slide over my smoldering clit, near-ecstasy catching in my throat. He claims my mouth in a kiss that matches the light flicks, my tongue helpless as his strokes my heat to a place I’ve never felt.

  I feel a pulse quicken.

  Deep inside me.

  A flickering.

  Lighter fluid to a fire.

  My breath stops.

  Body tensing.

Wyatt groans, “That’s right. Try and hold it back. Let’s see how long that lasts. I can feel you’re about to cum. I’m taking what’s mine.” His mouth crashes into me, and everything breaks free. My pussy shivers and suddenly my clit feels like heaven is centered in one tiny spot that’s all his. My walls contract and Wyatt slides his middle finger back inside me, holding there as his thumb presses the sensitive corner of my throbbing bean. He vibrates it a little, just enough to make me lose my mind. “That’s it, cum for me. Mine, you’re mine. And I’m yours.”

My heart skips at those three words.

  Did he mean them?

  Is Wyatt mine?

  Because I know one thing.

  I am definitely his.

  Chapter 31

  Wyatt

Washington slams his locker, “Cocker, you mean to tell me that you’ve been seeing her for two whole months and nothing has happened?”

Even Eudy looks up from his report to hear my answer.

Buttoning a short-sleeve shirt up I shrug, “That’s right. Hardest thing I’ve ever done. Harder than the Academy.” Aside from the one time in her office, I’ve kept my hands off of her. Barely made it out that night without taking her on that messy desk of hers, so I haven’t tempted myself again by going that far.

“I don’t understand you,” Washington grumbles.

“You know how much I want to rip Diana’s clothes off every time I see her? Any idea?” I pause and they stare at me. “It’s bad. Can’t be alone with her for long. Have to be out in public. Whenever I drop her off, she’s tugging at my buttons, my zipper, and yet here we are, getting to know each other without sex.” I exhale, “Yet. It’s painful but…fun.”

“Wasn’t it you who said I needed to get laid?”

  “And you did.”

  “That is not the point!”

I check myself out in the mirror, like what I see, and lock up. “You forget that I don’t have the bad attitude you had. Look at this.” I point to my face. “I’m smilin’ — see that?”

“I see it but I don’t understand it.”

“Confidence, Wash, confidence. I’m a man who is in control of himself — I’m proving it — and when you have that, you have everything.”

Larter walks into the locker room. “Hey Eudy, give me that. I’ll fill it out tonight.”

The three of us freeze, staring at him in shock.

Deputy Eudy hands his partner the tablet. “Why?”

  “It’s your anniversary tonight.”

  “So?”

“Don’t you have somewhere to be?”

Eudy looks at me and Washington for affirmation that this isn’t a dream. We are just as mind-blown. “Thanks Larter. Christy will appreciate it.”

“No problem.” He sits down and gets to work, face casual as Eudy gathers his things.

Wash and I slowly back out just in case Larter has been replaced by a robot sent to destroy us.

Under my breath as we get some distance, I say, “See, people can change.”

  “You going somewhere fancy?”

Glancing to my black slacks and shirt I ask, “This?”

  “Don’t play dumb.”

  “I’m meeting her parents tonight.”

Washington stops in the middle of the desk cops and shouts at the top of his lungs, and they are big lungs, “Shut the fuck up!”

“Thank you for not drawing attention to it.”

  “You’re meeting her parents?!”

Everyone looks over. Especially the women I’ve seen without their uniforms. Sucking on my lips a second I sigh, “Yep.” Raising my voice I announce to the station, “I’m meeting my girlfriend’s parents tonight. Nothing big, just their anniversary and I’m her date. There, ya happy? Miracles are real.”

A few people look confused like we were at Larter offering to help Eudy do his job. Crooks being booked couldn’t care less, they hate us. The female officers I used to be intimate with, return to working because they figured out last month that I was off the market. They’re over it. Much to the dismay of my ego.

Slapping Washington’s back I push him toward the exit. He chuckles, amused at himself. “I can’t believe you’re even calling her your girlfriend and you haven’t—”

I push him again, and that booming laugh fills up the whole room.

  “Cocker!”

We look back to Chief’s office, find her standing in the door crooking her finger before she vanishes.

He and I exchange a look, and walk over.

“You’re off duty, go home,” I tell him.

“Not getting rid of me that quickly. I’m curious.”

“I have an idea, why don’t you delicately close her door like you’re scared?”

He eyes me. “That’s not funny.”

  “You did that.”

  “I am scared!”

I walk in and greet Fiore, “Chief. Need me?”

She points to her screen. “Something you want to tell me?”

Innocently I ask, “What?” and even lean in. “I don’t see anything.”

Fiore crosses her arms. “Don’t play coy. Where’s your fan group?”

  “What fan group?”

  “Cocker!”

I pick up a photograph, turn it around and see her husband and daughter. “I didn’t know you were married. He like his balls busted?”

She grabs it. “Give me that.”

Chuckling I flip around and head out. “You know I love you!”

“I don’t know how you did it, but I’m glad it’s done!” she calls after me, amusement hiding behind her mask of anger.

Washington and I stroll out as he asks, “You got them to dissolve it.”

“Just had to find the creator and give her what she really wanted. She made an announcement about being respectful toward me, unpublished the group and boom, no more group.”

  “What’d she want for it?”

Sun hits our faces, clear blue sky overheard thanks to late summertime hours. “She wanted dinner with me.”

  Washington balks, “Say what?”

We parked next to each other, so I’m stuck with him. For now. “I dug deep, found who started it all and sent her a message. Told her as much as I was flattered, the group was hurting my future in the force, how important my job is to me, and asked if I could take her out to dinner. Would that be cool. She said yes, gushed all over me for two hours. Sweet girl. Really shy. Just needed some attention and a bit of confidence building.”

Washington stops at his Range Rover. “And you did that for her,” he flatly says, as if my ego is the size of his head. Which is huge.

“She needed a push. You know me. I like to help people. Why do you think I wear a badge?”

Unlocking his door, Washington shakes his head. “Cocker, I’m glad we got paired up because you are a hoot.”

  “A hoot?”

“Don’t even.” He jumps in, door slammed by his strength, not his mood.

I tap on his window. “You want to come?”

“Hell no!” He reverses, glaring at me before he disappears.

Chuckling to myself, I pull out my phone and see a text from Diana.

Wyatt, come to Silver Linings. It’s Grams.

I break every speeding limit the
re is, phone ringing off the hook as the Cocker Family wakes up.

  Chapter 32

  Wyatt

Leaping out, I forget to shut my door as I run into the lobby of Silver Linings, find Grandpa and Grandma already here, the first to be called and the first to respond since they live just a couple blocks away.

There’s a hospital on the grounds, one of the reasons this was chosen for her home, in addition to the close proximity.

Plus Grams loves Spanish Moss and it lives on the oak trees outside. Reminded her of the home she shared with the great-grandfather none of the cousins ever got the chance to meet.

Grandpa Michael is talking to someone behind the desk, a new guy. “My mother is May Cocker and I just got a phone call that she’s been admitted.”

The kid starts tapping, in no hurry.

I rush up. “Forget this. Come with me. Diana!” I shout, heart hurting. We just had lunch together with Grams two days ago. “Diana!”

She runs up so fast her yellow and white knee-length dress is blowing behind her. “Wyatt!” Her eyes cut to my grandparents as I introduce her.

“This is my girlfriend, Diana, Grandma and Grandpa.”

They nod, bigger things on their minds.

“Come with me.” She calls to reception, “I’ve got it Denny!”

Quick footsteps bring us deeper into the facility, through double doors to a covered walkway, a bridge with glass windows on both sides that takes us to an attached hospital built into the side of a hill.

Diana’s eyes well up as she explains, “I was organizing my desk to go home, meet you for the party, and Mary Beth ran and got me, since she knows how close I am with May. After our bingo game this afternoon, she was tired. Nothing out of the ordinary. Said something about missing Jerald again, and that she wanted to take a little nap.”

Grandpa’s jaw tightens, and Grandma gasps, hand floating to her mouth.

“The nurse on her floor saw her go in and when May didn’t come out after the usual hour and a half, she knocked and went inside. May was…” Diana corrects herself out of respect to my grandparents, “Mrs. Cocker was unconscious and breathing, but not responsive. They took her here.”
