Brandon leaned toward her. “I just got into town. I got to the hotel and you weren’t in your room. So I went out for a walk and I saw you in the window as I went by.”

  “Why are you here?”

  “I was looking for you.”

Delilah felt her heart swell. She was sure it showed in her eyes. But, if it did, Brandon ignored it. So she asked her burning question. “How did you find me on the other side of the country? Are you some great witch now? You pulled out a world map and cast a spell to locate me?”

“No. It was very mundane. Tristan gave me the address and your room number.”

“He did!” That was as surprising as Brandon showing up here, on the other side of the continent.

“Look, Lilah, I thought you put a spell on me. I was convinced that was why I felt this way. But Tristan said you didn’t put any kind of love spell on me. That these feelings were all mine. Was he right?”

“Yes.” It fell from between her lips. Her eyes watered. Brandon was here. And he’d been worried that she’d altered his feelings. She leaned in to kiss him.

  But he pushed her away.

She frowned at him, but he kept talking. “Lilah, I did put a love spell on you. I undid it last night, but there’s every possibility that you don’t really feel the same way about me.”

So that was it. “When did you do it?”

She was pretty sure he was too late to have an effect even if his spell had worked.

“The same night I got the birch bark sticks.”

  Yes. Too late.

“Brandon, it didn’t work.” She reached for him.

“How do you know for sure?” He held her hands away, not letting her touch him.

“For the same reason I can’t cast a spell to make your eyes green. You can’t create what already is. I was in love with you before that.”

The concern in his eyes vanished, replaced instantaneously with desire.

This time he let her kiss him. His mouth molded to hers, sparking a heat that was far too great for the little booth they were in. Quickly slapping cash onto the table, he grabbed her hand, pulling her along behind him until they were out under the moonlight, the sand of the beach sinking beneath their feet.

Halfway back to the hotel he stopped and turned her to face him. “Delilah. I love you.”

She smiled up at him. “I love you, too.”

His eyes searched hers for something more, something less. “That part was all real?”

  “All of it.”

His expression was serious, his gaze on hers. “Do you think you could keep doing it? That you could love me for the rest of your life?”

  “I’m certain.”

The moon was out. Brandon was at Pawley’s Island with her. And he really loved her. He pressed his forehead to hers, and kissed her lightly. “Marry me?”

She didn’t need an olive to figure out the answer. Even when she hadn’t understood, this was where she’d been led. She needed to be in that window tonight, so Brandon would find her. So she could be right here. Because the universe was always right.

  “Yes.”

  About Savannah

  * * *

I started writing when I was eight--I hand wrote an 80-page novella that I believed to be (adult) romantic suspense. I’m proud to say, I’ve gotten a lot better since then. I’ve grown up to be a nerd at heart! I love neuroscience and people watching, and if you look, you’ll find some of that in each Savannah Kade book. Most days you’ll find me in my office, looking out my window at a handful of the neighbor’s cows, or watching my dogs or my cat roam the backyard.
