He kissed her gently, and as her lips parted and softened against his, she could feel the heavy thud of his heartbeat pounding in unison with her own.

He said huskily, ‘As to that reporter…I hated the thought of him being able to get close to you. The prospect of him taking you out on a date was altogether too much.’

She gave a soft laugh. ‘As if he would ever get the chance. You are a fool, Rhys.’

‘I know. Can you forgive me?’

His expression was abject, and she melted instantly. ‘I’ll forgive you anything. I love you. I’ve always loved you. That was why I had no experience of other men. You were the only one for me, and I didn’t want to spread my wings. I wanted to stay with you and have you tell me that I was the only woman in your life, but you never did that.’

‘I’ll make up for it now. You are the only woman in my life, Emma. Will you marry me? Will you stay by my side for now and for always?’

She saw all the love and need expressed in the depths of his grey eyes. ‘I will,’ she murmured.

She smiled up at him, and that was all the invitation he needed. His arms closed around her, wrapping her in his embrace, and he kissed her tenderly, drawing her down into the sweet, honeyed cocoon of a love that would last for a lifetime.
