Unquiet Souls: a DI Gus McGuire case

Page 38

by Mistry, Liz

‘Aw, he likes you’ said Fergus McGuire placing his arm round his wife’s shoulders and squeezing tightly. ‘Told you it was a good idea, Corrine. It’ll help with his therapy… and it’ll be company for you when Gus is working.’

Feeling bulldozed, Gus followed his mum through to the kitchen where she began unpacking various meals she’d made. With a sinking heart Gus realised that for the next couple of hours his solitude would be interrupted. He grinned. What the hell. He couldn’t do without them… even if he knew that he’d be forced to bin his mother’s unappetising concoctions the minute she left. He sprawled on the sofa, dog still in his arms, and allowed his parents to feel useful.

  Acknowledgements

There are many people I need to thank for managing to finally get Unquiet souls published. Firstly, my publishers, the fantastic Bloodhound Books for having faith in me and guiding me through the whole publication process with such finesse.

The Leeds Trinity MA (Creative Writing) staff, particularly Martyn Bedford, whose perceptive tutoring forced me to ‘raise my game’ and who offered invaluable advice on moving forward to publication- thanks Martyn. My fellow MA students, Lucy Brighton, Stephanie Buick, Sam Gardner, Andrea Hardaker, John Harris, Sophie Joelle, Jo Kemp, Lewis King, Becky Leeming, Suzanne Owen, Ken Relf, Wendy Simpson, Kathleen Strafford and Mark Whittle who egged me on to better writing and who played a huge part in the editing process.

Thanks, also to The Barny Bunch (pub quiz Queens), Debbie, Gillian, Helen, Jyoti, Madi, Rhonda and Susan who generously supplied coffee, mirth and the down to earth nonsense that kept me sane.

The Hare & Hounds pub on Toller Lane was my refuge through stormy writing times and its cosy friendly atmosphere made writing Unquiet Souls a dream- thank you, particularly, Katie, Luke and Jade.

The Crime Warp team, Roman, Cheryll, Toria, Jacki and Liz, were behind me all the way and I owe a large debt of gratitude to you. Toria Forsyth- Moser, gets a particular thank you for taking on huge chunks of editing and providing loads of constructive advice.

My family, both immediate and extended (of whom there are many), for their unwavering support and encouragement, I couldn’t have done it without you. To Dr Nima Poovaya-Smith, Director Alchemy; Senior Visiting Research Fellow, Department of Fine Art, University of Leeds and Paul Leon Russell Smith, Sociologist and specialist in Theosopy, both of whom had faith in me and supported me in this sometimes daunting process.

The biggest thanks goes to Nilesh, Ravi, Kasi and Jimi who are always there being daft, offering support and making me laugh- they believed I could fly… and darn it they were right. I love you now and always.

Unquiet Souls is a work of fiction and as such I have taken creative licence with a few things; the most notable being that The Fort (Lilycroft Police Station) in Manningham is, in reality, an administrative building. Unfortunately, Mo’s SaMOsa’s is sadly absent from Oak Lane. My apologies for any other errors.
