  “Work,” I said. And I did have work, but I could have gotten out of it. I just didn’t want to.

  “Then the weekend after,” he said. He was watching me closely.

  “Is it important?”

  Now I had his full attention whether I wanted it or not. “That’s relative,” he said.

  “Fine.”

  “Are you ok?”

  “Honestly, I don’t know.” I decided to go for it. “What were you doing last night?”

  He unfolded his napkin and dropped it into his lap. “Work,” he said.

  “What kind of work?”

  “A project,” he said. “The most important thing I’ve ever worked on.” But he didn’t say it like it was top secret, heavy, a burden. He sounded… cheerful.

  So Corbin was acting weird. He probably thought I was acting weird, too.

  “If you’re worried about Henry, I’m not going after him,” he said, serious. “He’s staying far away, and I thought about your theory that maybe he isn’t having an easy time calling off his dogs.”

  “Someone confirmed it.”

  Corbin grinned, nodded. “Someone confirmed it. Henry’s upholding his end of the deal. Thank you for being a good influence.”

  I exhaled. Well, that was a good thing at least.

  Then I wondered what the hell I was thinking. He had all these secrets, but at least he wasn’t going to murder someone and so my heart felt lighter? And all was forgiven? At least he wasn’t the worst kind of monster, right?

  I couldn’t help it. I started laughing. “Damn, we’re a disaster.”

  “I disagree. Eat your breakfast.”

  So I forked up a buttery bite of bread and cinnamon and sugar. Corbin watched me, tried to figure out what I was thinking.

  And I watched him, tried to figure out what he was up to.

  The longer I looked at him across the table, the more I wanted to be under him. Which was all kinds of crazy.

  Corbin Lagos was either the worst thing to ever happen to me, or the best.

  Maybe he was both.
