Operation WetFish Book 15: A Gathering of Minds

“Union?” Jeremiah had asked, confused and elated at the same time. “You mean you still want to move against Sanders even though Baronaire’s out?”
“Better to learn it now than later. He would only have faltered during the attack, and that would have ruined everything. How far are you willing to go, Jeremiah, to rid this world of a hunter like Edward Sanders?”
“I’ve been planning the man’s death since the early sixties, Dalton. You have no idea how far I’m willing to go.”
She had raised an eyebrow. “Baronaire?”
“Yes. But it looks like I was wrong to ever enlist him. The two of us are all it will take. The two of us combined can accomplish anything, Dalton. Besides, if Baronaire can’t be counted upon, there is another.”
Dalton had smiled a small smile. “This Barrows you two spoke of?”
“If I can find him, he’ll be worth a hundred Baronaires. With Richard Barrows we can bring WetFish to its knees, and our kind need never live in fear again.”
“Jeremiah?”
He shook his head, remembered he was sitting at his desk in the bunker. Detective Lin was standing over him, frowning slightly. “Sue,” he smiled. “Sorry, miles away.”
“Yeah, noticed. Are you two all right? Charles was a bit ... weird.”
“Baronaire, Detective. He likes for people to call him Baronaire.”
“I know. And he didn’t even correct me.”
“Baronaire is fine,” he said. “He’s a man in love, and they’re never sound of mind.”
“Yeah, I guess. Just do me a favour and keep an eye on him, yeah?”
“Oh, absolutely.”
As Lin departed Jeremiah cast a casual glance through the transparent walls of the DCI’s office. Sanders was still busy at work, oblivious of everything going on around him. Jeremiah allowed himself a wider grin. The old fool would never know what hit him. And looking about the office, Jeremiah gazed upon all the officers he would kill. Just as he had been planning for over thirty years.
He could certainly wait a little while longer, but the plan was in motion. There was nothing that could stop it now.
