Hard to Hold (Bennett Dynasty Book 4)

He chuckled as he ran off.
I glanced up at the sky and cursed beneath my breath before stepping under the tent and sitting on one of the tables, the walkie-talkie next to me.
I didn’t know how long I’d been there, but I’d hopped off the table to pour some coffee. My back was to the cars when I heard the crunch of tires. I glanced over my shoulder and turned back to my coffee. I was doctoring the black magic as the sound of crunching leaves indicated someone was approaching behind me.
“If you’re looking for the woman, they went to go get her at the apple groves.”
“I’ve already found my woman, but she seems to be disobeying doctor’s orders.”
The sound of Harlon’s voice made my heart pitter-patter.
“Is that so?” I asked without turning around.
“I’m figuring out she’s kind of stubborn,” he said.
I slowly turned around as a smile split my lips. Even though I was excited he was here, I wasn’t getting my hopes up. “Did you lose your sister again and come back to kidnap me? Because you might want to think twice. Gwen won’t give you a three-day head start.”
His lips twitched as he neared and took my hand. “Sorry I haven’t had time to call.”
“I’m sure you had a lot of things to handle.”
“I made peace with Riley and his dad.”
Something warm floated in my chest. I’d hoped that was the case, but I hadn’t known if that damage could be undone. “That’s great.”
“I’ve been working with the FBI and the DEA about the drug smuggling and trying to put the pieces back together again.”
“I know.” My voice came out a whisper. “I drew you on the docks with them.”
“Manny is improving. He’s got thirty percent of his eyesight back. That was all you. I don’t know how you did it, but you started to heal him.”
My heart dropped into my stomach. “Is that why you’re here? Kidnapping me so we can make him 100 percent better?”
“Nina, I’m not here to make you do anything you don’t want to do.”
I swallowed hard. “You aren’t wearing flannel, so how long are you staying?”
“That depends on you, and as far as the flannel goes, I haven’t had time to change. I saw you here on the way to the cabin and stopped.”
He leaned in and kissed me nice and slow. “Care to join me at the cabin?”
My eyes remained closed at he pulled away. His kiss left me feeling hazy. His touch melted the knot in my stomach. “I…” I opened my eyes. “I can’t.”
“Oh.” Disappointment flashed in his eyes.
“Not because I don’t want to,” I said, grabbing the radio and wiggling it in my hands. “I’m working here.”
His lips twitched. “They wouldn’t let you go hiking, huh?”
“I’d only slow them down,” I answered.
He gestured to the table. “You expecting company?”
The bear mace was sitting on the map. “God, I hope not. I’d be at a disadvantage.”
He kissed me again and stared into my eyes. “I can’t have my wife unable to defend herself.”
I chuckled this time and stepped out of his touch. “Wife? You’re jumping the gun there, Wall Street. I’m not even your girlfriend.”
“I plan to change that. That’s why I’m here.”
“Don’t you have a company to run? More pieces to pick up?”
“I’ve taken a temporary hiatus.”
“And if I don’t want to move?”
“Then I have twenty acres out in the woods that would be perfect for training the dogs. I’ll move here and, at the most, commute for when Suzie needs me. Peanut is in the truck. He can’t wait to see you.” Harlon’s lips twisted into a smile.
“You’d move here for me?” I hated that my voice broke as I asked.
“I’d kill bears for you, baby,” he answered and kissed me again.
