Waking the Sleeping Giant: The First Terran Interstellar War 2 (Founding of the Federation Book 5)

The entire delegation picked up and went to Sol for the final formal treaty signing once it was approved by both sides. President Camp was on hand to formally sign the document. He had made it clear it would be one of the final acts of his career since he hadn't run for reelection. Instead, a new generation would step up to run the government.

  “This is the dawning of a new era,” the Veraxin leader said in an address to the Terran population.

  Walter snorted. He'd been there, in uniform as a representative of the military. For some reason he still couldn't resist checking on the media coverage the following day.

  The coverage was limited to snippets as a group of talking heads picking apart the treaty for its flaws. Admiral Lewis shook his head as he listened to them argue. Already the peace party was crowing victory and threatening to make gains in the next election.

  "We had to defend ourselves you know!”

  “Mutual respect got us this far!" was the retort.

  “They damn well better leave us alone,” he said, turning to the fleet. A third squadron of dreadnoughts had just launched. He was already getting flack from congress about the budget. They'd made cutbacks twice in the past two years.

  The Peace Party wasn't giving in but nor was he and his partisans. And the piracy-threatening places like Cape Suzette, as well as the wariness of the new alien species and others out there in the void, made certain the public wouldn't forget they needed protection.

  He saw the argument pick up tempo and one of the people throw their hands up in despair.

  “And we're back to normal it seems,” Admiral Lewis said with a shake of his head as he shut the signal off. “Time to get back to work.”

  Author's Afterward:

  Wow! This was a rough book to write for some reason. I think it was because of all the changes, or it could be the medical stuff I've got going on. Fortunately, they seem to be wrapping up.

  Anyways, some of you may point out a few differences in the sectors, both here and in Admiral Irons’ time. Yes, there was a hyperbridge between Tau and Rho. There were also bridges connecting the other sectors and long ones crisscrossing the entire galaxy. More on that later—most likely during We the People or The Hyperspace War, both of which I'll get around to writing eventually. I think.

  This book was supposed to be the second half of one big book. I think I'm glad now I split it up. I don't know if that will work for future planned books, but we'll see. It was outlined as a far different book, with a three-sided war, that evolved into the Veraxins coming in on Terran's side, then this. I like this version. It was also supposed to have more in it with a dozen or so more battles, planetary invasions, the works. Plus, Wendy getting her come-up-pance. I sort of truncated it. Sorry.

  So, I'm done for a bit. What's next I hear some of you asking? Well, I'm glad you did. :D

  I am going to get the cover art done, then some time off to catch up on some print projects, including one near and dear to some of ya’ll’s hearts, some other things I need to work on, the wiki, and then on to the next book.

  Court Martial.

  Yes, I am going back into Admiral Irons time period. Court Martial will be followed by The Gathering Storm. Beyond that, I'm debating getting my toe wet in the Ragnarok time period with Sparks or something else. I dunno. You can voice your opinion on my blog or in the Facebook fan group.

  For those of you wondering what is next in the Founding series, well, you'll have to wait a bit. The next book in that time period is We the People I believe. (Though that could change!)
