  “Show me.”

Our whole group proceeded through the halls of the USG base. Memories of Delta ran through my mind and I grit my teeth simply to stop myself from crying. After a few minutes we were standing in the open courtyard that served as the launch bay for the space pods. In the middle of the platform laid the bulky Digit. His helmet had been broken at the base where the shot had tore through his armor and essentially punched a hole in his throat. The only evidence that he was dead and not just asleep was the layer of frost covering his body and the pool of blood frozen near the entrance to the launch area.

I kneeled next to the man, placing my hand on his chest. The weight on my shoulders felt like it would crush me into the ground and I wanted to lay right there next to him. I had failed. Again, and again and again. A sob escaped me and my tears froze on my face as they fell. Dun Lund was unforgiving. The man had been among the first to adapt, and now that we were somewhat free, he was dead.

I wasn’t sure how long I kneeled next to 36561800, but I felt a warm hand against my neck. When I looked up, I saw Gamma’s eyes. Uncanny resolution and sadness shone within as she spoke, “His death is not your fault. We all need to be stronger. You. Are. Not. Alone.” To drive her point in, Gamma poked me in the neck with each word.

Seconds later, Zeta and Beta joined Gamma, setting their hands on my back. While it was physically impossible to feel the heat through the layers of isolation and steel plating, I felt ever so slightly warmer. I nodded at Delta’s corpse, looking into the man’s peaceful face and stood.

Taking a deep breath of the freezing cold air of a desolate moon, I turned to the others.

“Where is my spaceship? We are taking back Earth.”
