Imelda nodded again. Her mothers taught her the true way of things. Women affected the future far more than men. Men could create life, but the women chose to bring that life into the world. One name caught her attention. “Syndra?”

“Aye. A minor player but important in the scheme of things. You know this name?”

“The Syndra I knew died long ago,” Imelda murmured. She had been a sister wife, a good friend, and a lover.

“This Syndra descended from your sister wife, named after her ancestor. She does not believe she has the potential of the caravan magic within her because she lies under the hand of Velkos. He senses her weaknesses and exploits them. He uses her. She may play a bigger role than even we can see.”

“And what is my role, Great Fates?” Imelda asked, bowing her head again.

“Like always, you will watch and guide. Ezriel needs you in Ristalin, and then you must attend Syndra. As for Delia, the God of Chaos controls her Fate, just as he led Synlair’s hand in coming to Megreria.”

Imelda gasped. The Fates controlled everything except Chaos. This was a war of the Gods; the humans were merely pawns in their game.

“As you work in Mishok, so will forces be at work in Acclesh. They have their own Gods planning an intervention, and we will spend time there as well. It is a great trust we give you.” A light flowed through her, lighting her veins and coursing through her flesh. “Your mortal shell fails you. We will gift you with health, but nothing else. The rest is your responsibility.”

Imelda expected no more. She had made a mistake as a young child and had spent five centuries attempting to rectify the chaos she had caused. She had seen civilizations rise and fall; she had birthed countless kings and brigands. Still, though, she remained a plaything in the grasp of the Gods. A heavy hand landed on her shoulder, glowing with otherworldly power.

“This is your last task, Imelda. If you succeed, you will be redeemed, and you may die in peace.” The old woman’s eyes filled with tears. That was all she wanted. She nodded, accepting her Fate from the Fates themselves.
