Forever Yours, Casey

I hear a lot of moaning from the other couch as Leslie sits up and holds her head. I use my foot and nudge Sharon till she joins us in our suffering.
“Oh my god, did we die last night?” Sharon shoves the pillow over her eyes and moans.
“We definitely didn’t die or we wouldn’t feel this miserable.” Leslie looks up at me from blood shot eyes. “I’m a grandmother, you know. I haven’t done something like this in thirty years.”
“I don’t think any of us have ever partied that hard.”
Leslie catches sight of our artwork and bursts into laughter. Sharon sits up to find out what’s so funny when she sees them, too. “I hope those aren’t like Armani shirts, I can’t afford to replace them if so.”
Leslie laughs until she cries and soon we all sound like crazy people. Gasping for air, I finally settle down.
“Thank you, ladies, for putting up with me last night. I realize now I way over shared my problems.”
“Are you kidding me? It was better than any soap opera or book I’ve ever read.”
“I’m glad my life could entertain you.” I toss my pillow at Sharon and stick my tongue out.
“Well, the way I see it; we have less than two hours to put our plan into motion.”
“What plan?” I stare quizzically at Leslie who looks at me like I’ve lost my mind.
“The plan for you to ask Casey to the prom, of course.”
“We weren’t serious about that, were we?”
“We need better signs but I’m with Leslie, we need to get cleaned up and get you to the airport.”
Both women share determined looks before springing into action. Sharon forces me to the bathroom and tells me to get in the shower. By the time I come out, the living room is spotless and Sharon tells me Leslie is showering in her room and will be back soon.
I give Sharon some clothes and wait nervously while she gets ready. In no time at all they are ready to go and I feel like throwing up.
“I don’t know, guys. He has been single for what, twenty-four hours? How do we know he wants this?”
I get looks from them that clearly say I’m an idiot. “Casey has been all about the job for the last six years. He is quitting to move out here and be near you. Heck, he hired me away and I’m moving out here to work for him. If you don’t think that is a man in love then you are dumber than I thought.”
Sharon and I both stare at Leslie. “I didn’t know he was coming here full-time, he never said. Don’t you have family back home?”
“Nope, my daughter and grandkids are in Arizona. The way I look at it, I’ll be even closer to them now. Plus, I think of Casey as a son, I wouldn’t want to leave him.”
“That’s good enough for me. Now grab your purse, we have posters to buy.”
Chapter Forty
Casey
I won’t say I’ve forgiven my parents; they have a lot to atone for. However, I have nothing to complain about as far as their treatment of the kids yesterday. With time I think they can learn to be good grandparents.
As soon as the plane touches down, I turn on my cell and text Brittany that we’ve landed. After being with her for three weeks straight, I find my skin crawling at being away from her so long. It’s as if my body knows we found her and it doesn’t want to lose sight of her again.
Mrs. Sampson told me the house search has been narrowed down to two. I can’t wait to tell the kids and take them to pick out their home. I pray Brittany feels the same as I do and will move in with me.
“Are you guys excited to see your mom?”
Austin’s wide smile is all the answer I need, he missed her as much as I did. On the shuttle from the gate to the main terminal, I check my phone twice more. Brittany hasn’t responded. I hope she didn’t sleep in and forget she’s picking us up.
There is a large crowd of people waiting for relatives when we get there. I can’t find her in the crowd. Kacee spots her first and covers her mouth as she gasps.
“Do you see her?”
She points to a group off to the right, they are holding large posters in the air. As we get closer, my mouth goes dry. Standing there looking beautiful is Mrs. Sampson, Sharon, Brittany’s mother, grandmother and of course, Brittany. The signs read, “Will you...go to...prom...with me?”
Brittany is biting her lip; I can see the nervousness on her face. She never did like attention and right now she has a lot of people gathered around us watching.
“Casey Sanders, I wasn’t there to take you to your senior prom. I want to make that up to you. Will you go to prom with me?”
She read the letters. I remember writing about skipping the prom. At a loss for words, unusual for a person in my line of work, I lift her into a hug and plant a kiss on her gorgeous mouth.
“Is that a yes? Will you be my prom date?”
“I’ll be forever yours.”
