CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO AREAS OF DUBLIN WHERE BEN AND CAREY LIVE?
There’s always been intense rivalry in Dublin between people who live north of the river and people who live on the south side. Going back in Dublin’s history, the south side has always been the more fashionable, with many of the English landlords who owned Irish land living in what is now the Dublin 2 and Dublin 4 districts and which are still very sought-after addresses. Ben actually lives in Portobello, Dublin 8, which was a more artisan area but is now also equally sought after by young urban professionals. It actually encompasses another old and famous part of the city, The Liberties, which is where my own father came from and where we had a grocery store in one of the markets.
There are some fashionable areas on the north side of the river too, like Howth and Malahide, but the perception has always been that it has been the less affluent part of Dublin. Nevertheless Northsiders won’t take any effort by Southsiders to put them down!
People tend to stay on whatever side of the river they’re born, although in my case I did move to the Northside, much to the horror of my friends. But I live in a very nice part of town, only three miles from the city centre, and I love it! For Ben and Carey, like lots of other couples who are from different sides of the river, the Northside/Southside issue is a big one!
For anyone who visits Ireland and wonders about the postal codes, the Southside has even numbers and the Northside odd numbers.
YOUR BOOKS HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND LANGUAGES. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THEM THAT MAKES THEM SO UNIVERSAL?
I’m always very excited when a parcel comes with my foreign language editions, even though I obviously don’t understand a word of most of them. I hope that people in different countries like my books because I write about the things that everyone worries about — life, love, career, family — and how the hell do you juggle them all? I think I also try to give my characters realistic issues to deal with and hopefully help them to solve their problems and be happier people at the end of the books. Both He’s Got to Go and Too Good to Be True were nominated for the Parker Romantic Novel of the Year Award. To be honest, I don’t try to write romantic novels but I do think that everyone wants to believe that there’s a partner out there for them. And though I want my characters to have full and interesting lives and careers whether they’re single or married, it’s nice for them to have someone to share the ups and downs with, even if he doesn’t turn out to be the man of their dreams!
