“I thought we’d lost you,” said Bashar in amazement.

“You don’t get rid of me that easily.” Neale gratefully sank into the seat and put his blood-soaked knife on the armrest. He was covered in blood from head to toe. “Don’t worry,” he said, noticing their eyes scanning him. “None of it’s mine.”

Bashar couldn’t believe it. It seemed as if Neale was alone. He was alive. Against the odds, Neale was still alive.

“Neale, you know we were just leaving. Are you okay?” Bashar found a leather jacket on a nearby seat and handed it to Neale. Neale might have entered the room on his own but how long would it be before the real zombies joined them? They had to get moving.

“Thanks.” Neale wiped the blood from his face. “Leaving? You mean back down there?” he asked, pointing to the exit.

Tony nodded. “Down the stairs. Back to the city. We need to do something for Bashar.”

Neale got to his feet. “The chopper’s gone I take it?”

Tony nodded. “Carrington and Lulu are on board. The witch is dead.” He hesitated before adding, “It’s just us now.”

Bashar saw the clock on the wall above the exit. It was nearly midnight.

  “Marama?”

  Bashar shook his head. “Sorry.”

Neale sighed. “But you got her at least? The bitch who killed Amelia?” Neale walked over to the bar.

“Yeah, we got her,” said Bashar resolutely, remembering how good it had felt when he’d sunk his blade into her neck. “She’s deader than Elvis.”

Neale smiled. “Good.” He gently prodded the dead barman and when there was no response he leant an arm over the bar. Neale pulled a bottle of beer out, popped the top on the edge of the bar, and downed it.

“Right then,” said Neale, as he went back to the seat and picked up his knife. “Better get on with it, hadn’t we?” He winked at Bashar and headed for the exit. “If Tony says you’ve got something to do, then we may as well get on with it. There’s a few zombies down there I didn’t get through. Come on, brother. We’re not here for a haircut, you know. The zombies are waiting…”

Undoubtedly the magnificent city of London served as part of the inspiration for this novel, although my version is not a true replica of the real thing. The places visited by Bashar are only in my head and this novel. Should you want to charter a helicopter to the Shard you will be disappointed…
