A Life Between Us

Place is important in my novels. I tend to use real houses that I’ve known. I remove the real inhabitants and put in the imaginary ones, while leaving behind some of the real objects and furniture. I find that tremendously helpful. For instance, Lane’s End House is based on my grandparents’ home, as recalled from my childhood. The quality of the light, the steepness of the steps, the clang of the gate are all real, with a few embellishments thrown in.

  What’s next for you?

I have made a start on a third novel, and a fourth, and I’m having ideas for a fifth. As I mentioned, time is in short supply, so I really am planning long term. I’m not into time scales and deadlines, but I’ll be aiming to have a third novel “finished” by early 2018. Fingers crossed!
