Billy twirled around. “Can I come to the wedding? I want to come to the wedding.”
“Wedding?” His broken arm throbbed as he waved it through the air, testing his shoulder. “What wedding?” When the pain spiked, he leaned against the table, once again “alone” and “confused.”
He rubbed his eyes. “I need to get out of here.”
Billy slumped the way a child told he could no longer eat directly from a cookie jar slumped. “I can’t come to the wedding?”
Arguing with a Burner did not seem… wise. “Sure. You can come to the wedding.” Lying about this “wedding” might get him out of here faster.
Billy returned the sword to the mechanical scabbard on his back and grinned like a small child. “I’m the best man!”
Off in the shadows, the other two hungry Burners twitched. In front of Ladon, Billy twirled once more like a… princess.
Ladon groaned. How the hell did he get strapped to a table deep inside some… lair… with Burners?
“There, there, Boyfriend.” Billy the Burner patted his shoulder. “I’ll get you home.”
To the base. He needed to get back to the base. Rysa needed him. “Why do you keep calling me Boyfriend?” He wasn’t some stinky Burner’s boyfriend.
Billy sniffed as he tipped his head to the side in a way that should have popped his vertebrae, and his eyebrow arched in the most incredulous and comical manner Ladon had ever seen.
Must be a Burner thing, he thought.
“Because you are Boyfriend.” Billy pouted.
No, he wasn’t Boyfriend.
“My name’s Nathaniel,” Ladon said. “Call me Nate.”

About the Author
As a child, Kris took down a pack of hungry wolves with only a hardcover copy of The Dragonriders of Pern and a sharpened toothbrush. That fateful day set her on a path traversing many storytelling worlds—dabbles in film and comic books, time as a talent agent and a textbook photo coordinator, and a foray into nonfiction. After co-authoring Mind Shapes: Understanding the Differences in Thinking and Communication, Kris returned to academia.
