  “What did I miss?”

“Nothing much,” said Sip, tossing her head, “just my plot of decimation. That’s what I’m going to call it, too. The Decimation Plot. WHERE IS LISABELLE!”

“I’m right here,” Lisabelle said, coming in from the back of the stage. She went to Charlotte first and touched my sister’s cheek, then turned to Sip.

“I agree. The Hunters have overstepped badly. I thought they would cease this nonsense of going after my friends, but since they have not . . .”

“Very angry,” said Dacer, still rocking. Charlotte reached out and covered his hand with hers.

“I don’t understand,” I said, looking back and forth among the gathered paranormals. “Charlotte’s life has been threatened before.”

I looked to my sister. I had known there was something she wasn’t telling me, and given how pale her skin looked at the moment, I figured she was still keeping a secret. With a nod of her head, she motioned for me to come sit with her. I did what she asked, Keller moving to stand behind her and put his hands on her shoulders.

“I have something to tell you, too,” I said, feeling that it was important to tell her what I had told Lisabelle before she said something that changed everything.

“Okay,” she whispered, staring at me. “Shoot.”

I told her that I was going to attend Paranormal Public University. All the other paranormals in the room gave a collective sigh. Vital gave me an encouraging smile, Sip wiped a tear from her eye, and Lisabelle lit a fly on fire. I looked back at my sister.

“That’s wonderful, Ricky,” she said. “I’m so happy.”

I nodded. “Okay, what did you want to tell me?”

She licked dry lips as her gray eyes met mine. Taking a deep breath she said, “Keller and I eloped.”

I raised my eyebrows. Charlotte searched my face and Keller kept a firm grip on his wife.

“Of course we wanted you there, but . . .” She trailed off as I shook my head.

“It’s fine, Charlotte,” I said. “I mean, of course I would have liked to be there, but I know. I know. It’s okay. I just wish . . . well, I’m sorry I missed it, but congratulations.” What I really wanted to know was why this mattered in relation to Charlotte’s having nearly died just a little while ago.

“He doesn’t get it,” Sip cawed. She paced furiously back and forth until Lisabelle reached out a hand and set it on the top of her head to stop her in her tracks.

Charlotte let go of Dacer, who for the first time since I arrived was only shooting off minimal sparks. “I’m pregnant,” she said.
